Your both looking a lot happier in this video so obviously things are going well. I just got back from a weeks holiday in Perugia Umbria and it was unbearably hot and humid. I bought lots of sicilian produce the tomatoes and mangoes were sweet juicy and aromatic. Looking forward to seeing all your hard efforts planting pay off ❤

We hope you still managed to enjoy your holidays. Imagine that you would have to work outside with this heat and humidity! It's been tough this summer. The level of humidity was insane this year. It's nice to hear that you enjoyed some local produce! We are happier because autumn is coming and some cooler days are ahead ❤️

How do you make your pesto?? Would you mind sharing your recipe, please?
@SomethingLikeThis14 ай бұрын
There are so many recipies available online. I don't really use measurements. I just pick some leaves, add oil, salt, and olive oil, and blend it. It is great to add some nuts. Typical recipie uses pine nuts, but I prefer to use almonds. It's very easy and you can freeze it for winter months 😉

This is my first day of seeing your videos, and I am so delighted to have discovered your channel. The mention of Danilo Dolci made me catch my breath. I only learned of him a month ago and now his book, “Sicilian Lives”, is in my home waiting for me to read it as well as a biography of this extraordinary man. I am Canadian but now live in Texas and this year realized that a summer garden is no longer possible because of too many days of excessive heat even for this region. I am focused on a fall/winter garden which will include golden beets and turnips, vegetables I only recently cultivated a liking for after eschewing both for decades. To my neighbours, I am a older woman who likes to garden (which I do), but my purpose is to ensure I will have something to put on my plate come what may.

Considering past temperature readings, next few years should be cooler. But I am talking about 2-4 years. It really depends on the ENSO cycle. The 2023/2024 emperatures are mostly the effect of the last El Nino (which wasn't even the strongest since reliable temperature readings have started for the ENSO cycle). Generally, whatever is happening last and this year, will be the norm in about 5 years and onwards. But I guess you probably already know that.

The butterfly you referred to is called a White Cabbage Butterfly 😊 Pesky little things. Their caterpillar babies ate their way through my broccoli beds this year. I've been doing some research and there are quite a few things you can do to deter them besides netting. Trap plants like nasturtium can help keep them off your broccoli/brassicas and strong smelling herbs will help too. I'll be giving it a try with my next planting. Good luck with your autumn planting guys! Onwards and upwards ❤😂

Yes, that naughty White Cabbage Butterfly! I'm so sorry to hear about your broccoli! But for us, netting worked the best, and we never had big damage. I always wanted to try Nasturtium ❤️ Let us know if hearbs will save your broccoli 🥦

Are you able to fill up your tank with lake water or is that not an option or even illegal? Curious how you usually sell, do you go to a market, do people come to your place to buy? Do you sell mostly to private clients or also restaurants? Could be an interesting topic for another video.
@SomethingLikeThis14 ай бұрын
It is unfortunately illegal. That way we could fill up the tanks and not have issue watering the rest of the week. We do home deliveries twice a week to different towns. When we have some vegetables we would probably do a video of how we work 😃 Thank you for an idea ❤️
@stijnt23774 ай бұрын
@@SomethingLikeThis1 Not saying you should try to do illegal things but they say the soil is the best and biggest tank to store water in. If you have some kind of slope to your terreno I would certainly consider digging a basin that can hold several thousand liters and fill that up with lake water. 'downhill' from it you can expect fast growth of water loving plants even though the water will most likely infiltrate quickly in that basin. It'll kickstart the regeneration of a portion of your farm.

I hope you'll do a good job with the kale. It's challenging to introduce new products. A few years ago I tried to introduce on the market where i live the zucchinni. I gave up when I had to throw the most of them because people weren't accustomed to those dark green courgettes. :)
@SomethingLikeThis14 ай бұрын
I am sorry to hear that! What a shame that your clients didn't like it. Sometimes it helps to give them some recipies or explain how to cook it. We introduced cavolo nero (which is actually from North Italy) but nobody knew about it here in South. And that was a massive success. Fingers crossed for this crop too. Usually people here love all kind of greens. So hopefully it will be a success 🙌

The best way is to immerse yourself into the experiences that Sicily offers, watch some Italian movies, go chat with people and some apps, I use duolingo. Thank you, we are trying our best, but it's never perfect 😆

Hope winter gives you a bumper crop. I'm not a gardener but even here in the states our summers are too hot. Now, it's summer I dread and winter I look forward to. But, for you with your industry depending on weather it must be twice as frustrating. The Alamac is predicting a mild winter. Hope that goes for you too. (Some rain but not too much)

Any thoughts on general air and water quality in Sicily? I heard it quite polluted?
@SomethingLikeThis14 ай бұрын
It's actually very good! Of course if you go to big cities it's a different story. My husband says he used to clean the car's number plate every 3 days in England, and here he doesn't need to do it. The water is a big problem here. Long story. But usually, tap water is not drinkable.
@InNateReason4 ай бұрын
You know, God is good! Its definitely in the bible about praying for rain! Anyway, I wanted to bring something to both of your attention. You currently roughly have 4500 subscribers including myself. However, the video where you talk alot about your story and the situation from about a month ago, you actually had 241k views on that one video! Obviously you are not monetized at this point, however with that 241k views on the video from a month ago, I have an idea for you! One way you could possibly afford to dig a well(especially since I am guessing its not terrible cost wise there) and not have this problem hopefully again, is to start a go fund me page for the well specifically! Maybe find out exactly how much it would cost to do so and the equipment you would need to integrate it into your farm, and I am guessing with just watching you guys you might be surprised how well it does! I think I would be willing to give a little! I am sure there are others who would as well! Especially know how hard physically that job is also since I have worked on a farm! So very much understand and respect. And, you could ask people to share in the video! Maybe even do it as a follow up of some sort to the video that got 241k views! Also, maybe consider buying additional tanks or creating a holding pond or something for when the lake water is available to gather water so you can get by longer when you have access to it? Just a thought! Hopefully some of these ideas help! Either way, am pulling for you guys and love that you guys moved to Sicily and risked it all to start this farm! The more I learn about the region the more I love it. God Bless, Nate🙂
