If anyone hasn't yet heard the Flowers on the Dirt reissue with Paul's and Elvis Costello's demos, I highly highly highly (hi hi hi) recommend listening to those tracks. I think of their acoustic demos as its own album, and it is my favorite all-time number-one Paul McCartney album with a bullet. My Brave Face, Lovers That Never Were, Twenty Fine Fingers as acoustic numbers and McCartney and McManus harmonizing are all absolutely thrilling songs.

Enjoyed going through your Paul McCartney top 26 albums! To be honest it's only the past few years that I got into the Beatles and their solo material. But seeing your dedication into the band and also hearing it from popular musicians such as Dave Grohl whom see the Beatles as an inspiration it has opened my eyes and ears, to give them a chance and to start adding them into my collection. I'll keep an eye for some of these Paul McCartney albums so far only have Venus & Mars + Red Rose Speedway

Appears you haven't, and neither have I. It is still my favorite of all time. I do agree with you about New. And I bought RAM on CD a really really good CD. Thanks for the review I will certainly buy some more Paul material. When I lost my record collection in the early nineties I think I had McCartney Band on the Run back to the egg and I think I had everything up to 1979. Always loved the Beatles but I pretty much didn't really like what Paul was doing for the most part. And then because I lost my record collection I wasn't buying a whole lot of music for a while. Well thanks again and many blessings to you and all you love.

Here is my list. Alot of the fans have a bias against some of the 80's stuff because of sound dating. My bias is against some of the newer stuff where age is causing warblieness in Paul's vocal. Consequently, only one of the newer albums has made my top 10. Not including any Fireman stuff in the list. Including bonus tracks to do my ranking 1.Band On The Run 2. London Town 3. Ram 4. Red Rose Speedway(The second album of material makes a huge difference). 5. Back To The Egg 6.Venus And Mars 7.Tug Of War 8.Press To Play 9.Memory Almost Full 10.McCartney 11. McCartney 2 12.Flowers In The Dirt 13. Chaos And Creation In The Neighborhood 14.Flaming Pie 15.Pipes Of Peace 16.Egypt Station(with a bullet) 17.Give My Regards To Broad Street 18.Wings At The Speed Of Sound(would be much higher if it had the live versions of Time To Hide and Beware My Love. Venus and Mars also suffers the same at times.).19.Run Devil Run 20. Off The Ground 21.Cccp 22.Kisses On The Bottom 23.New(overproduced and haven't been able to get into any of the songs). 24. Driving Rain 25.Wild Life

When I finish this "marathon" I will do a ranking just like you do. Thanks for the inspiration !!

great personal review and i have to agree on roughly 75% of your likes and dislikes. Being around the same age you and i, i too have fond memories of the 70's. Such a great time when we still had all our families around not too mention our extended family, The Beatles .... John was comming back and paul was still young and relevant ect...ect.... just an incredible time to be alive . I mean , we both are 2nd generation beatles fans and perhaps that is why we are STILL such huge fans ( we never had a chance to be in the midst of all the hype) As for paul, i will never forget just how great Back to the Egg resonated with me AND all my non-beatles freinds at the time , it truly made that kind of an impact back in 1979 (not unlike say 1976 Over America release which again got EVERYONE on board with Paul ). The Hollywood Bowl in '77 brought a lot of folks into the fold as well i remember.... Anyway, again, thank you for this ranking... like i said, i agree with most of it . I would say IF you had included Wings over America in the list, THAT album would have come in as the top ranking Wings album for the incredible hits, memories and pure rock and roll it held. Mmmmm.... maybe next time, you will have to do a review on Pauls LIVE albums worst to best. ps. Totally agree with you on the new Red rose Speedway double album and how it SHOULD have been a double album as intended back in 1973. Also agree with the overproduction and dated sounds on tug of war and press to play,although like you said, there ARE some great tunes on tug of war unlike the 2 tracks i like on press. Still love Off the Ground to this day and i dont know why??? Could be 1993 was a great year for me musically in my own carreer or perhaps it was the great co-writing with Elvis C. or perhaps it was the Live in the New World '93 tour, not sure. Cheers my freinds

Hi Joe. This was a very interesting ranking of Paul McCartney’s studio albums...I agree with a lot of what you’re saying here. I agree completely with you on Flowers In The Dirt and Off The Ground...FITD has some great moments, and a couple McCartney classics as well, but I always felt it wasn’t that cohesive as a whole, and for me it starts to go a little downhill on side two...but it’s still a good album, just not great. Off The Ground, however, has grown on me so much over the years! While the highlights may not be quite as “classic” as the best songs on FITD...it’s just a more enjoyable listen as a whole, like you said. I’m so happy to see Memory Almost Full and NEW so high on the list! Those two albums were the first “new” McCartney releases I remember getting when they first came out...so I have a lot of fond memories of those two albums. Memory Almost Full and NEW would definitely make my top ten, or maybe even top five! I think I’m going to have to agree with you on RAM being number one...not a bad track on there, and it’s definitely one of Paul’s most unique and instantly recognizable albums...RAM just has a certain sound to it that I don’t think many other albums have...a truly wonderful album! This was an excellent video here, and a great tribute to Paul for his birthday!

I think it’s really interesting how time or changing times can be a revisionist force. Ram was slammed for many years as being inferior and a poor album. I think it deserves to be at the top and I’ve always thought it to be a good album regardless of the critical trolling of the album. I wonder how those critics who slammed it at the time now view it?

I do think those glossy '80s sounds have dated unfortunately, just as fashionable clothes from some eras look hideous today while fashionable clothes from other eras are classic and retro-elegant. I suspect it had something to do with the speed at which technology was evolving. If you listen to an album like Stevie Wonder's In Square Circle (1985), it sounds as if he's playing it on what was available in a toy department, whereas his even older work (Songs in the Key of Life, Innervisions, Talking Book) has a richer, more organic sound. I do like Tug of War a lot, for the high quality of the material. It was obvious that the sequel album, Pipes of Peace, was the leftovers.
@ClarenceFisher4 жыл бұрын
Run Devil Run is the better of the two "50s" albums mostly due to the engineering. This is a really lively album, you feel as if you're seeing him in person at the club, where as CHOBA makes you think you have a bad transmission of Radio Luxembourg.

Another very enjoyable ranking, and for once we have the same top 2 :) RAM is undoubtedly his masterpiece and with Venus & Mars there's only one track I don't like (Spirits Of Ancient Egypt) but with Band On The Run I can take or leave Bluebird, Mamunia & Let Me Roll It. However, I seem to be very different from most Paul McCartney fans in that I really can't see the appeal of Flaming Pie. I've tried many times to listen to it but it just does absolutely nothing for me. But as I've said before, we all have different tastes. I love Wild Life. Run Devil Run would have been much better if Paul would put down his electric guitar and play the upright. Paul's arrangements on McCartney are fantastic. I felt that Flowers in the Dirt was far more original than Off the Ground. Wings At The Speed of Sound is fantastic because it feels like a band album, which I think McCartney should do more often. McCartney II would be much better with a different producer; maybe Brian Eno or Mark Mothersbaugh. I agree with you about Chaos and Creation: I love that he is honest on that album. You are right about Band on the Run; it is a perfect album, but I grow bored of it. Would Ram have been even stronger with a different final track? Nice job with your ranking. Enjoyed it!

Good work Joe. I've never got to grips with Electric Arguments either. In fact I was thinking just recently that it's time I did so. Just out of interest though, if. 'Picasso's Last Words' had been part of the Abbey Road side 2 medley, would you still have thought it was terrible?
@MeanMrMayo4 жыл бұрын
Yes. But how could it possibly have been part of the ABBEY ROAD medley anyway, with its reference to other Wings songs like Mrs. Vandebilt, as well as having Linda and Denny singing? It sounds unlike anything else on the Beatles medley.
@jamesgriffithsmusic4 жыл бұрын
@@MeanMrMayo I just meant in theory not in practice....if Paul had written that particular melody and lyrics (the main part of the song) a couple of years earlier it could easily have been a contender for Abbey Road as it's quirky and surreal and does seem to lend itself to a medley-type arrangement with other songs interspersed. I've always thought of it as one of Paul's most 'Beatles-y' songs from the Wings period.

Personally, I view Driving Rain as Paul' s "Plastic Ono Band" It' s Paul at his most raw and exposed. I just think he should've trimmed off 3 or 4 tunes. Too long of an album.

You seem to feel about “Egypt Station” the way I do about “New” 😂 I’ve always thought Side 1 was super solid (especially the title track, which I think is totally ‘Beatle worthy’)... I could never get into Side 2 at all though aside from “Everybody Out There” and “I Can Bet”... It’s just sorta forgettable for me and “Appreciate” is probably one of my least favorite songs Paul’s ever out... In general, I also think “New” suffers from overproduction, even on the songs I like... Was just never crazy about that album’s ‘sound’... When it comes to “Egypt Station” on the other hand, I think the production is outstanding... Aside from “Fuh You”, it’s not too modern like a lot of “New” is for me but it doesn’t sound outdated either... It sits comfortably in the middle... And I pretty like/love every single track on that entire album... There are a few I’m not *as* crazy about, like “Caesar Rock” for example, but even that one has grown on me... So personally, I don’t feel that ES is overrated... It’s one of my all time faves for sure 👍🏻

Also... For what it’s worth, I freaking love “Distractions” 😍

Man, I completely agree with this. New has a killer first side, to be sure, but as an overall package, ES is waaaay better. (Though I will say that "Scared" is a track that I'd listen to waaaay more if it hadn't been hidden. What a strange choice.) Pretty much the only ES songs that I typically at least think about skipping are Hand in Hand and Caesar Rock. I didn't expect for Paul to come out with one of his strongest, most consistent albums at this point in his career, but here we are.

Mr. Gallion's Classes ‘Hand in Hand’ is actually one of my faves off of ES! But yeah, it definitely is super consistent!

I love Paul and his music. For me the greatest vocalist in the history of rock n roll lost his voice nearly 20 years ago and his last three or four albums are unlistenable due to his diminished vocals and redundant , pointless lyrics. Rings sings better than Paul does now which is truly sad to me.

I agree with the ranking of Venus & Mars, but I vehemently disagree with your opinion of Picasso's Last Words and No Words. I love the kitschy mini-medley-reprise of other tracks mixed in at the fade out. It's really hilarious at the point they sing "drink to my health, you know I - - HEY HO!!!" I was cracking up the first time I heard that and still think it's just great. By the way, "Mrs Vanderbilt" is another wild song. You laugh because you don't know where he came up with the word association, but it's a hell of a jam. No Words has that awesome guitar solo and the harmonies as it builds up to its crescendo.

Thanks Mr Mayo, I would have 'Memory almost Full' a bit higher. However, I'm listening to Flaming Pie now for the first time and I see where you're coming from, as they say. Many of Paul's albums have a track record of being casually, almost carelessly produced, at times, but 'Flaming' and 'Memory almost full' are done well.

I think over time more and more people are going to generally agree with you re: Egypt Station and Back to the Egg.

Red Rose Speedway had sounded to me like an incomplete, uneven album, even before I found out he had to cut half the tracks out to make a single album. I had the blissful pleasure of picking up the reissue with the extra tracks and it really makes a difference to the quality. Very nice.

6:43 - Paul was not "approaching his 70's" when he did Run Devil Run. He was 57. I really don't have too many gripes with your list. I would have Mc-I higher, Off the ground higher and Mc-II MUCH lower.
@MeanMrMayo4 жыл бұрын
Wow, you're right. In fact, I just re-watched LIVE AT THE CAVERN from 1999, and was calculating his age as 57. So in the moment of making my video, I had a brain lapse. It happens.

Happy 78th Birthday Paul McCartney !! Hard to believe this !! I am keeping steady at 39 !! One correction; You have the album "New" twice at #15 and # 5. That is crazy ! Your album ratings are pretty good. I would have "New" at #15 only. Why not put Wings Over America at #5 ? Wings, Wild Life is lower than Driving Rain. I am pleasantly surprised your choice of Venus and Mars near the Top. Another miss hit, you should have Trippin' in the Live Fantastic in the Top 10 with Robbie and Hamish..some of his best instrumental guitar works since...Abbey Road ? Another miss hit, the amazing Amoeba album, some of Paul's best Live Recordings, ever !!! Probably #11. Another miss hit, would be the amazing "Paul is Live 1993" again another great Live album, probably #12. Another miss hit, the awesome Live album Paul is Live at Citi Field NY..your "home town" !! One great album !!! Probably #13. Another great album miss hit is the Egypt Station "Travellers Edition" which supercedes the original by a mile, #14. Another great album miss hit is the stellar "Wingspan" album, definitely #1, the best music by any artist in the world, by far !! This compilation album is superlative plus and out sold most McCartney albums by a Mile !! Another great compilation album is "All the Best !" which is amazing. And don't forget the amazing Greatest Hits album by Wings with the Angel WIngs on the Cover. That sold millions too !! The Unplugged Album was a disappointment and probably down with Driving Rain, although some nice bluesy guitar licks by Robbie and Hammish, really add a bonus !! And don't forget the amazing Classical albums by Paul McCartney. Too many people overlooks his classical accomplishments like Liverpool Oratorio and the stellar Standing Stone and others, Ocean's Kingdom ballet with some of Paul's best melodic vibes. In short, "New" a bit lower and "Flowers in the Dirt" with Elvis and Paul's works so fantastic, definitely # 5 at least for me.
@MeanMrMayo4 жыл бұрын
Well, I said I was not including live albums (if you watched the whole video). I did not have NEW at two different spots; it is just #5 (though I showed it and mentioned it also when I was comparing it with EGYPT STATION).
@djreid4 жыл бұрын
@@MeanMrMayo Oh sorry Mayo. Sounded confusing on New. Okay. Well, what about putting the compilations into the mix. They are studio and brilliant. No artist, not even Elvis or the Stones or Bowie has a hit list like Paul's Wingspan. Should be #1 album of all time in my opinion. And I forgot one. What about the Paul McCartney box set ? That has to be one of his best compilations. Anyway, sorry...well done Mayo.

I have so many issues with these rankings...but putting RAM at #1 makes up for the gross under-ranking of BAND ON THE RUN and MCCARTNEY...
