One often overlooked track on London Town which gives me goosebumps is Don't Let It Bring You Down... i think partly written by Laine, the vocal range is incredible and the subject matter sobering... damn what a great song... i did a cover of it years ago but could not get the high vocal part so left it half completed.

i am collecting the double cds editions since the begining , you got it right because since then i started collecting and listening Paul albums. For me every release is completely new. I have albums made after 2005 and the archive collections. So every year i am full of Paul news music , i am so used to it that it might be weird if i dont listen a new Paul album every year. The whole Archive Collection is great and I'm glad I have got all of the items including their Double LPs versions all along. I'd love Paul release ALL of his projects in this series, but it's LT/BTTE I'm waiting for the most now. I'd be happy to get Broad Street by the way: the movie might not be cool, but the soundtrack album is one of my favourites from Paul. As for my own ranking of these Archive editions... well... I'm not so sure (they're all superb), but OK: 1. Ram / Red Rose Speedway / Wings Over America / Flowers In The Dirt 2. Wild Life / McCartney II / Tug Of War / Pipes Of Peace 3. Venus And Mars / Wings At The Speed Of Sound 4. McCartney / Band On The Run

Hi Andrew, great video thanks for sharing. I too have all the deluxe sets. My favourite has got to be the Wings 1971-73 edition, it's a bit special to hear 20 songs from Wings over Europe in excellent sound quality. As for future releases I reckon they set a precedent with the Wings 71-73 collection and they could try it again with London Town '78/Back to the Egg '79 with a Wings 1978-79 possibly including a gig from the '79 tour. Personally I'd love to see a deluxe of Chaos & Creation but reckon the next one will be Flaming Pie as 8 songs appeared on Pure McCartney! Cheers!

Thanks Eddie! I agree looks like they've got a new template for future releases. Wouldn't be sur6if they also do a mid 80s set comprising Broad Steer, Press To Play and rarities of that era. That could be a way of selling those less respected albums in a huge package along with, for example, Return To Pepperland as the hook.

Thanks for the great overview. I have been a huge Macca ever since McCartney came out in 1970 during my teen years. However, I've held off on buying all the expensive deluxe albums and your review guided me to Red Rose Speedway, one I passed on when it came out in 2018. With its wealth of extra audio/video treasure compared to some of the others n the series, it is a worthy number one based on the amount of goodies. Thanks again,

I didn’t see the date of this video until you said something about Flaming Pie, then I thought “wait a minute”… My first Paul McCartney archive purchase was Red Rose Speedway. I loved it! Then I got a hold of RAM, Wild Life, which I adore, then Pipes of Peace, Tug of War, Flowers in the Dirt, and about a year ago I dropped $600USD for this massive Flaming Pie. My last purchase was a factory-sealed, US edition of Wings over America that I was able to get for $180USD. I kinda expected to get ripped off at that price but it arrived factory sealed, and a non-Japanese edition. Still a few left to go but the prices for McCartney I and II are too rich for my blood and Band on the Run I can’t find a non-Japanese box set for under $375USD. At The Speed of Sound I’d love to get as well, but that too seems to be over $300USD now. Anyway, I loved the video. As for upcoming Archive editions I’d love to London Town and Back to the Egg, which seems likely to me if Paul plans on continuing the collections. Since it’s been a bit since a proper archive release I’m surprised that Paul is releasing the McCartney I II and III box. In preordered it because it was only $39USD for the CD version, I’d much rather have a proper archive though. Makes me wonder why he’s releasing the 3 McCartney’s like this. McCartney 3 already has 754 iterations 😉 Do we need another?

I don't quite understand the target audience for the 1/2/3 box. It must be a very limited group of people who both a)want the albums and b)don't already have them. Hope you manage to spot a bargain on those other boxes some time, you've surprised me with how much the Speed Of Sound box is selling for at the moment!

I would love a Chaos & Creation Archive Deluxe Edition. With the Abbey Road show on dvd/bluray and a book with notes on the production with Nigel Godrich, lot of outtakes. But as you said, is very hard...

there was a half hour creating chaos at Abbey Road on the DVD in the McCartney Years DVD collection and there's a also two disc version of the album with the Abbey Road show DVD as well. I have those.

Hi Andrew. Thankyou for giving us a look at these McCartney archives box sets. Way too expensive for me, but if I see one at a reasonable price, I’ll purchase it. However, before I do, I’m more of a HD -Hi-Rez surround enthusiast now. Please can you tell me which sets have the best Hi-Rez edition? In particular, DVD-Audio or Blu-ray 5.1 surround content. Hi Rob. Firstly, worth mentioning none of these have 5.1 or Blu Ray audio. The HiRes content is all 24/96 and is download only. You won't find a McCartney Archive with the hi Res content on a CD. The downloads only tend to be available for maybe a year or two from release, which makes it a lottery if you buy any too long after release, but I suppose from MPLs point of view it's probably encouraged a few early sales from people who daren't wait too long. Which is best? I'd say Band On The Run, Wings At The Speed Of Sound and Flaming Pie are probably the 3 best sounding Hi Res versions, all superb. One thing the Archive Collection can't be faulted for is the quality of the remasters. Tug Of War is an outlier as that received a full remix (there were reasons why....) but it's not an improvement on the original mix in my opinion.

I enjoyed your reviews and rankings of this diverse collection of box sets. I didn’t have a strong interest in these Archive Collection editions when they were first released, because I already owned most of the original vinyl releases, and had duplicates on CD. Additionally, I purchased the 25th Anniversary “Band on the Run” CD multi-pack, so why would I need a Deluxe edition of that? But this ranking review of the Archive collection sparked my interest in owning a few of these. At first, I planned on only collecting my favorites: “Venus and Mars”, “Ram”, “Wings Over America”, and yes, “Band on the Run”. But your high ranking of “Red Rose Speedway” and “McCartney II” helped me reconsider whether I needed to include those editions as well. To date, my collection lacks “McCartney”, “McCartney II” (both nearly impossible to purchase at a fair price), “Wild Life” (available, and next on my “to purchase” list), and the recently released “Flaming Pie” which must be selling quickly - the Deluxe Edition is Sold Out on the McCartney website, and there was a $40 price increase on Amazon (from $216 earlier this week to $256 on Thursday). I will continue to pursue the two McCartney albums. Amazon Music has the Archive editions available for listening. “McCartney II” was a revelation! I was surprised by how enjoyable it is, and agree that the added songs of the planned double album really enhance the entire experience. Thanks again.

Hi Andrew. I have seen this great video before. Thank you for doing this. I own nearly all of these Archive sets. I have RRS & Wildlife coming soon. Sadly I missed out on the 'Big Barn Box'. I'm not crazy enough to pay over $1700AUD for it on Ebay either. I personally preferred the series packaged as per the first 3 releases I.e. McCartney & McCartney II & BOTR. It was classy and simpler. The change came with lavish packaging of Ram, with all the extra 'bells & whistles'... photo packs, extra books etc (you're right, did we really need a little book of sheep?). Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate the incredible effort put into these collections. Wings Over America is a phenomenal package, probably my favourite. (I know what I said lol). However I prefer a consistent format (the warped books for Venus & Mars and Speed Of Sound are annoying). I fear it's also become more about the extra books, photos, lyrics and paraphernalia than the actual music & video content itself. These extras have probably contributed to the higher prices compared to those first 3 releases. It's why I held off for so long on the last 2 newer sets. As for what should be next, I'd say Back To The Egg & London Town to round out the Wings era. The later albums are probably too recent to do next. However "Off The Ground" is now 26 years old. Wings over America is my only Deluxe Box from this Collection. I just wanted it because I want to have all the Tour Memorabilia wich makes the Wings Rockshow experience even better. For the other albums, i bought the standard editions. Worked for me.

egypt station has yet another version coming called the explorer's edition, its basically a more affordable edition of the deluxe travelers edition, with only the audio content coming may 17th, it will be a 2 disc cd, a 3 disc blk vinyl, a 3 disc colored vinyl and a 2 disc colored vinyl

Wonderful! Always interesting to see ranking videos done intelligently and interestingly. I only wish I would have had the ability to purchase some of these as they were released But the funds weren’t there at the time. Now they are, if you can find them, over $500 in Some cases. I'm also tempted by the Wings Over America box which looks great but as there isn't a lot of extra content I may go for the coloured vinyl edition instead as I can't afford both.

Got them all. Mccartney's Archive Collection, to me, are the Gold standard. Pipes of Peace is at the bottom simply because I never play it. Ram and Wings Over America are amazing, but most of them are. I would be interested in seeing Press To Play, hopefully with stripped down versions of the songs. There are some good songs that were suffocated.

I then looked on amazon and ebay and the prices very high (covid- wife home too very curious of all these parcels that have come in the last few months! So decided not the right time to spend $280 on a box set!) I saw the 2 disc set with all those demos on it. Yes Tommy's Coming Home on it...I have listened to it several times in the past few days...just amazing! I don't think anything can top it in this archives series. I mean I didn't get RRS yet but will...I was never a fan of Press to Play or London Town so not sure what those bonus cuts would be? I am looking forward to Back to the Egg though. I really liked that one.

I'm late to this party, but I have managed to find the three sets that I really wanted--Ram, Band on the Run and Red Rose Speedway--at reasonable/semi-reasonable prices. There are two others I've got my eye on, but I've got plenty to keep me busy for now. This video was a great help in determining which ones would be best for me. The booklet "A Small Book of Sheep" is marvy. Too bad that the Wings Over America release doesn't include a bonus DVD of the Rockshow film. Maybe there were rights issues involved. Would there be any reason for not buying a Japanese import of a Paul McCartney Archive Deluxe release? I've been seeing them around on the net.

Rockshow did get issued separately on DVD/Blu Ray so hopefully you can find that. I'm not sure whether the Japanese versions have text that's all/part in Japanese so that's worth finding out first! Which other ones are you most interested in getting?

@@AndrewDixonMusic On the Japanese imports, it appears that the reading materials inside the cases are unchanged, but the hype sticker is in Japanese, and there are Japanese translations above or below the titles of the songs on the listing on the heavy-stock page (don't know what it's called) on the outside back of the box. I was wondering if there were media compatibility issues, particularly with the video discs. You seem to be knowledgeable on those matters, but I can write the sellers as well. The two collections I would like to obtain additionally are McCartney and Venus and Mars, particularly the former.

I think the Lew Grade legal action was because of songwriting credits on Ram. Paul was contracted to ATV through their buyout of Northern Songs. Linda however was not. So if she go a co-songwriting credit on some songs then ATV would not be able to claim ownership. They could be registered through a publishing company that Paul and Linda owned and made more royalties off of.

I'm a Paul /Wings late commer due to me being a John and George fan. I'm experiencing Paul/Wings music for the 1st time, and I thought I was collecting the Archive collection because the CDs have a white section on the left hand side of the CD cover with Archive collection written on the side. I had no idea those large booklet style existed? The bones material from what I have heard so far has looked healthy eg: Wildlife has more bonus tracks than the Album. Why haven't I seen what you displayed on your GREAT Video???

VERY slight! Surely a lot slimmer than if they were bringing this package out now. A few little sketches of songs and some live versions from the end of the 70s. There must be some great stuff from the sessions still in the vaults.

Yeah for sure, in 2023, they'll do a big 50th Anniversary Edition with a remix, alt-mixes, more live versions of BotR songs from over the years, and loads of extras like Linda photo prints, etc. Probably not an Archive Collection Release, just a larger stand-alone box set for the big Anniversary, the final word on Paul's most popular solo album, modeled after the Imagine Ultimate Mix set in terms of audio, but with all the types of extras that are in the new Flaming Pie box. It'll be expensive ha!

I wouldn't be surprised if you're right, on the other hand it's a dangerous road to go down by effectively saying that the Deluxe Archive Collections are not the last word on the subject. Unless they intend to finish the Archives by 2022 in which case I guess they could do whatever they want then!

@@AndrewDixonMusic Notice how the new huge Flaming Pie set is called COLLECTORS EDITION. Paul has released an ARCHIVE EDITION of Band on the Run, 10 years ago. And it's sold out and out of print, very hard to find even on second markets. I don't see any reason he can't release a COLLECTORS EDITION of Band on the Run for the 50th (13 years after the Archive Edition), again with a remix as the main feature and other ephemera, just like the recent Beatles and Imagine sets.

Andrew, Here I am commenting on a year old post but this is perhaps the best post to pose this question. Recently on eBay 3 copies of the Red Rose Speedway / Wild Life archive with the extra book and live CD and bigger box went for approximately $1,000 to $1,825. All three were out of their shipping box and opened. The later was in near mint condition. That one went for $1,825. So my question is what do you do to insure your music collection? Good question, I hope I've done enough! It's a combination of house contents insurance for the appropriate amount and I have photos of all my shelves to try and prove that I do own this stuff and that I'm not trying to scam the insurance company! I'd never get back what it would cost to replace though.

Hi, I can't remember exactly but Pipes Of Peace would have been somewhere between £55 and £65, and Band On The Run I remember less because I didn't buy it until a few years later, but my best guess would be between £30 and £45

The glitches spoil things on some albums, such as the jump on Magneto and Titanium Man, the variable sound levels on the double album version of RRS and the extra stray note on Love Is Strange. Really poor quality control.

Perhaps bang together a The Fireman thing? Well done, Red Rose Speedway is my favorite as well alongside RAM and the amazing Wings over America set.

My Ram box number is about 27,000 so I don't know what happened with that one! I don't think they have all had the same number produced. Flaming Pie seems to have been a smaller number than previous. Not yet heard of one over 9,000.

Hi, I have that sheet inside the box but as you say it's a bit big so unfortunately it's got quite badly creased down one side. Flaming Pie works better as that one fits nicely inside without getting damaged at all.
