Angle on equals angle off. Or does it? In this Barry Stark Snooker Coach tutorial, Barry demonstrates escaping from a snooker using one and two cushions, but depending on the angle of the shot against the cushion you may have to consider the phenomena of slide and the effect it will have on the angle that the cue ball leaves the cushion.

Dickson, If you ever get the chance to play on a professional table that has just bee re-covered you will soon see the difference between a club table and the tables the professionals play on in terms of the slide from the cushions.

I was shown a way to escape from snookers called "imaginary table".When you are snookered picture in your mind a mirror image of the table next to the actual table,with the balls in the same position.Aim at the object ball on the imaginary table with the cue ball and you will be amazed how it gives you the first point of contact on the cushion.Very useful to determine the angle when the cue ball has to strike the cushion in the first few inches of its path.Give it a try!

Fahad. It is necessary to be relaxed, tension will always cause errors. Try getting into the position naturally, don't force anything, where you feel any tension in your body make a conscious and determined effort to relax it. If you feel that you cannot let go of the cue, try playing without a pause on the back swing, keep the action as one continual movement. If that doesn't work, in your practise and after you have aimed try closing your eyes before you deliver the cue, this takes one of your senses away and stops it from interfering with the shot itself. The feeling you get should then be replicated playing with the eyes opened.

Hello Barry Sir I have played snooker for many years, but the escape is weak. No matter 1 or 2 cusions, I have watched many teachings without success, just like your 2 cusion escape yellow ball. I know the theory of angle on equals angle off, but In inches, there are probably over 10 first touch points all close to each other around the cusion , parallel lines also will appear, So how to find the most correct position? Thank You

@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 6 жыл бұрын
Siu Chung FUNG. Because you are dealing with right angles( 90 degrees,) it is invariably easier to judge. Granted it takes a little practise but visualising the two parallel lines that are created by the path the cue ball takes is mostly the way to do it.

Does the sliding effect happen in an acute angle? If yes, then, is that sliding effect stronger compare with an obtuse angle? If I play the shot much harder, it appears the angle of reflection is smaller than the angle of incidence. Is it the case? What is such effect?
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 6 жыл бұрын
Paul. The sliding effect is not particularly noticeable with an acute angle but very noticeable with an obtuse angle particularly on a new cloth that has a sheen on it such as the ones you see on the television. This slide is reduced as the cloth gets a little worn and the sheen diminishes. When you play the shot hard the cue ball tends to bury itself into the cushion a little and rebounds slightly squarer. You can also make the cue ball come off the cushion even squarer by applying screw, try it yourself.
@paulhunter2586
@paulhunter2586 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your explanation. The sliding and burying effect make saving snooker sound much more difficult than I thought, though pro players seem to manage it quite easily.

Hi Barry, another great video. Can you explain please why it is that a player would prefer to come off two cushions (even in a scenario where only one cushion is required)? Thanks.
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 6 жыл бұрын
Kadenza. Once you have the experience it is generally easier to come off two cushions than it is one because the right angle of the table corners enables the player to visualise the escape better. Visualising the two parallel lines is easy because they are in the line of sight for the player but a one cushion escape is generally not.

@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 5 жыл бұрын
Sandeep. Not really, most players when escaping from snookers will prefer to use two cushions and also use a little side. Just try to visualise the angle on and angle off creating two parallel lines.

daud. Although the markings of the table can be used as a guide only experience can teach you this. Set the situation up and send the white ball around the angles using plain ball, then side and use the baulk colour spots as targets. Sending the cue ball around the angles will teach you so much about the geography of the table.

No, Barry said "oblique" angle, which means an angle either more or less than 90 degrees. I agree that he actually meant obtuse angle (more than 90 but less than 180 degrees) instead.

Software. In the context that I used it I meant the cue ball strikes the cushion at more of a slant, not giving a definitive measurement.

Any reason why professional prefer 2 angle to hit the yellow vs a beginner doing it with 1 cushion?
@TheRaceface22
@TheRaceface22 8 жыл бұрын
Easier to hit . With the one cushion escape the yellow was quite far from the cushion which gives little margin for error . With the two cushion the yellow was closer to the second cushion . The way he showed with the two cues is easier to work out in your minds eye than the one cushion escape too . I struggled getting out of snooker till a ex pro told me this
@Gallardo26
@Gallardo26 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I think I have to experiment more with the 2 cues... i always can't visualize... but somehow i felt that the more cushions, the angles "closes up". 1 cushion if miss, there's no margin for error. Anyone have different opinions care to chip in?
@minhphan5918
@minhphan5918 8 жыл бұрын
In terms of geometry, with 2 cushion escape, all you do is to draw 2 parallel lines. For example, let's say cue is approaching the first cushion with 50 degree angle. It then bounces off that cushion with 50 angle. Next, it approaches the second cushion with 40 degree angle (180 - 90 - 50). It then bounces of the second cushion with 40 degree angle. From here, the line that the cue ball bounces off the second cushion is parallel with the line the cue ball creates when it approaches the second cushion. So for me, I guess pro prefer to hit 2 cushion escape because it is easier for them to visualize 2 parallel lines.
@minhphan5918
@minhphan5918 8 жыл бұрын
Correction: From here, the line that the cue ball bounces off the second cushion is parallel with the line the cue ball creates when it approaches the first cushion.
@klieu90210
@klieu90210 8 жыл бұрын
Playing off two cushions also grants a larger margin of error when factoring in unintentional side, because it'd be cancelling itself out a bit coming off the second cushion.

Do the slides cancel out when you hit 2 cushions?
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 7 жыл бұрын
Chris, It always depends on the angle the ball hits the cushion, the more acute the angle the more the slide. That rule applies whatever the amount of cushions. But if you think about it it is always unlikely to hit a second cushion at an acute angle.

Barry. how do I release a break snook ,behind yellow or green
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 6 жыл бұрын
Rashid. I assume you mean coming to rest on the baulk cushion behind the yellow or green from the break off. If I am right you should try to hit the end red of the triangle with either right hand side or left hand side. You are trying to send the cue ball around the angles, between blue an pink to hit the side cushion hopefully coming to rest on the baulk cushion behind the yellow or green. I have done a video on the break off, please have a look, it may answer some of your questions.

Barry sir I need your help. I was a very good snooker player. I used to play at national level. My highest break was 92 . I stopped playing snooker for about 5 years beverage I went to Dubaii for work and didn’t get time to play snooker there . Now again I have started playing snooker but I have lost all my game. Could you please give me some tips how to get my game back . Thank you in advance Regards Fahad from India
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach 6 жыл бұрын
Fahad. You obviously know most of the shots but have lost the coordination for the game somewhere along the lay off. Its time to return to basics, placing the cue on line, taking up your stance, checking how and where you are holding the cue etc. Put yourself on video, use your past knowledge to look for flaws. Playing at national level you must know what to look for, accept that your past form will only return if you can partially forget the shots you could play and concentrate on the simple stuff. You have to knock that rust off and only practise will do that for you, but practise with a purpose and that purpose starts with re-developing your cue action.
