Now that I have a good paying career with some spare money, I’m realizing how much shopping is pushed on us through social media. Especially for girls, influencers make it seem normal to never wear the same outfit twice, go out to eat every other day, and always be getting new beauty products and things that just aren’t necessary! It takes a lot of discipline to not give into it. Financially literate people are the ones who don’t look rich from the outside.

I'm 30 and I have to say this to those younger than me. GET OFF SOCIAL MEDIA! You do NOT need an artisan coffee everyday to be happy. Your home does not have to look like the home decor and home reno accounts you follow. You do not need to wear a brand new outfit every single day. Also, you do not need shapeware or 30 makeup products and face serums that costs hundreds of dollars. You do not need home delivery meal services. The world never used to be this way. I've watched a few of these videos already and each of them the person is spending on things we have been conditioned by scrolling to believe that we need. We don't. You don't. Turn it off, it's so depressing and we do not need to prove to an imaginary audience that you're happy when you're not.

I thought for years that you had to have a full-time job to open a Roth IRA... I only started investing/contributing last year (I'll be 28 in November). It's a hard pill to swallow, but it's always good to remind yourself that investing NOW is still better than NEVER investing at all. There are still tons of people out there that never invested with no savings/retirement and/or don't believe in investing for your future who will be in really shitty situations when they reach retirement age and won't actually be able to quit working because they won't have any money that was set aside in the past. The lack of financial literacy in our country is terrifying but channels like Caleb's are really great because it's the best way to actually reach Millennials/Gen Zs about what we actually were never taught in school growing up

When my step father got laid off from his marketing analyst position at Boeing he decided he would be a 'professional' poker player and constantly took my mom's money (including quarterly taxes from her 1099 job) and he was the one to manage their bills because mom said it stressed her out too much to pay the bills. Anyways what I got out of it was to not let anyone touch my money or try to avoid any reckless spending. Eating out is one thing. (We still do we need to reign it in a little but we are a family of four). I am working full time (as of now) and doing a side hustle. I also have a household budget sheet and have only missed one credit card payment on my Amazon card for a literal charge of $15. But I do budget for coffee. But I'm not usually buying a crafted drink just brewed coffee or cold brew with added cream

A trend I notice is a lot of these people WASTE money on rides services, food delivery, or high car payments with the flimsy excuse that the new car was needed because it is "safe". Caleb Hammer is basically giving them obvious advice. A roommate of mine once told me I was "good at being poor". I'm in my 30's & have never used ride services, other than taxis when I worked as a teen & had no car, refuse to pay for food delivery service since I have a car, and drive a 99 Honda that is plenty safe enough. I eat out maybe one or twice a week but other than that I go grocery shopping at Aldi & if I can't find the item there I go to Walmart. Basically these people live like they are rich when they are not.

She reminds me a little of myself when I was younger. I’ve seen a few of these videos with people that don’t seem receptive at all. Sometimes it just takes someone telling you how to get out of a situation. You feel like you’re in too deep that there isn’t a way out. I was 30 when I lost a house to foreclosure and a car to repossession. I considered bankruptcy but after consulting a lawyer I determined that my credit card and various other debt wasn’t worth filing bankruptcy over. My credit was already shot so I just set about contacting my creditors and settling all of my accounts. I went bare bones with my spending and clawed my way out. I’m much older now but am doing very well. I have a good emergency fund, very good credit and me and my husband are planning on buying a house this year. You can change your mindset. Sometimes you just need people to show you that it’s possible.

IKR? I bought a 2008 Lincoln MKX in 2014 for $14k, paid cash. It just this week rolled 100k miles (I work from home, don’t drive too much except for the occasional long trip to see family). It’s a beautiful car inside, really comfy on long rides, spacious for passengers and cargo. I am now having to put a little into it to keep it in shape, and will probably have to decide whether that’s still worth it at some point, but basically, I’ve spent less than $2k/year for a very nice ride, none of that in interest. I know people with monthly payments bigger than that. I really don’t get it, why do folks want to spend so much money on a nice car when they don’t have to? Crazy to me. And the car’s still worth $6-7k. I could get almost half my money back, 9 years later. Can’t get much cheaper than that, and I’m not even in a beater.

This makes me sad. A lot of ppl just don’t have the “know how” before coming of age and making these decisions. It took me 3yrs to settle on what car to buy. Mechanic laughed but told him a car is not a benefit as it depreciates as soon as u drive off the lot. I paid all cash for my car to avoid payments n high insurance. Even when i had the cash dealers would bully me to take a payment. Cash buyers don’t keep them fed. But I’m not foolish enough to fall for their ish. I tried to get rid of one of my credit cards but in the end kept it as my b.s. card due to a low credit line. Other two i use. One for “fun” because the points system is great n i love using my points. The other is a back up bill card as some companies don’t accept my debit. Some reason certain companies come back as Fraud in my debit. So it wasn’t worth dealing with that headache. N want to start my son on it to teach him finances. $200 limit i think is reasonable for a b.s. card lol Only one card needs to b paid off n i have it in savings to pay it off. I’m just pacing myself as everything is upside down now. But I’m settled on paying it off this month. Have multiple savings accounts n my 401k. I feel my finances r horrible. Even tho i have no other debt. Not anymore after seeing these videos. But my heart breaks for them all

I used to think this too... that banks should be more stringent giving a loan but in reality they are a business. If they deny someone in need a loan at 10% thst person will go to private lenders and get a loan at 20 or 30% or higher. The issue is more I think in the moral issue of it all, which businesses won't do because their interest is to make as much money as possible. Therefore the onus is on the customer to protect themselves and live frugally/responsibly.

It's a sucky place to be and she has to make the sacrifice and effort to do better if she doesn't want to be in the same position 10 years down the lane living paycheck to paycheck. I can't figure out if her nonchalance and lack of urgency is because she feels hopeless or she just doesn't care.

it seems the convenience of e-payments for everything disconnects people from how much they are actually spending

Just started watching your channel, it’s interesting to see how people “handle” their finances. What I’m interested know is if these people owe friends/family money too, do you ever ask that? Also do you do ones with people that are making good/smart financial choices.

First time watcher: I'm sort of disappointed cause I was truly hoping that the advice at the end took into account her financial intelligence as well as her emotional tie to the situation. When I started working with clients I realized it's truly important to show them the hard truth while uncovering the emotional triggers. There were some glaring themes that weren’t discussed that I think she would have benefited from. But maybe that wasn't the point of the audit, would hope in the future that could be incorporated.

thank you for not using background music through the conversation in your newer videos! i have consumed all the recent ones so moving onto the archives. it’s very hard to concentrate on the speakers with the background noise.

This series is very insightful and exciting. Could you do a video of where you break down where people should be financially by age or income. Could be a series going up in age by five years or salary by 10,000 increments.
