I got very lucky and married a woman that grew up in the country on a farm. When we started our family she wanted to give our kids the same experiences. They’ve grown up building forts out of broken branches, swimming in ponds, doing chores, bonfires and getting dirty.

I have used my box blade on the back of my tractor to skid logs out for years. Back up as close as you can hook short and lift. Keeps the front from digging in and the dirt out of the rest of the bark. That was some good help you had there. I have two grandsons about that age that go everywhere with me on this farm. Good video keep up the good work.

This is going to sound funny, but take one of those cheap ryobi battery pack leaf blowers with you. Blow that fire for less than a minute and you wont believe how easy it will be to get that thing started up. Like adding a billow to a coal forge, it really is that easy.
@jjjj72yahoocom6 жыл бұрын
David I second this, we live in Wisconsin and your fire needs to be about 9,000 degrees before in self sustains. Battery leaf blower does the trick!

Use the 3 point hitch to pick up the front of the log.

I use my leaf blower to pump some more air into the bonfire if it looks like it’s struggling a bit. I don’t blow stuff everywhere, just enough to feed. You can’t beat a good fire 🔥.
@67dueceman6 жыл бұрын
The cleanest and fastest way to get that fire going is a leaf blower. You'd be amazed how hot you could get it without adding any extra oil or fuel.

Tip for starting wet/damp wood. Mix diesel 3 parts to 2 parts gasoline in an old weed sprayer. It’s what the Forest Service uses in their drip torches. Works every time!!

Great video, if Melissa is keen on a saw mill I used a Lucas Mill some years back, worked it really hard and would have another without question, easy to set up and operate alone but better with two. Those two boys are wonderful, get them started young they will thank you for it later. Love that grapple.

This video just helped me plan my weekend. I have a big brush pile at the farm that needs to be burned. I think i will take the family to the farm Saturday morning and do some firewooding and then, that evening, have a bonfire and roast some hotdogs and do smores for dessert. Sounds like a plan.

Additional fire starting tip in a damp situation. My wife would change out our bed pillows every 12 to 18 months. I would save the old ones for starting a damp brush pile. They act like a giant candle wick and give about a 20 minute burn that is nice and hot. Don't stack the pile completely, stuff the pillow in, saturate it, light it and continue to add the rest of the brush. I prefer to use old engine oil or hydraulic fluid. Burns slower to ignite damp wood. You can also use some of the other fluid suggestions provided by other viewerss. I prefer the used oils. It starts off slow and as the oil heats up in the pillow it creates a gradually hotter fire with out flash back.

Tell us more about your sawlogs. How do you store them before they’re cut? How do you plan the size and dimensions of the finished lumber? Do you have in mind what you may use them for before you have them cut or just make it up as you go? Once you have a number of pieces cut, how do you store, protect, and preserve the wood once it has been cut? Thanks for all you do Mike! I am wanting to build a 10-15 foot bridge for my ranger 570 to go across a creek with steep banks.

I know they’re terribly expensive Mike, but gosh you’d love a Lucas Mill. They are great for the “smaller” saw logs under about 18in diameter - almost waste nothing. We’ve had a 6in one for about 15 years, amazing how much you end up using it!
@clarkwheeler87646 жыл бұрын
Mike, suggestion---how about considering getting a portable sawmill and cut up the really good logs into lumber..and possibly even custom lumber cutting. With the front grapples to load logs on the mill, you already have a lot of the hard work taken care of. And good lumber sells year round.

What are the burn laws in Pa? In WV we entered a period of limited burning that runs from Oct 1st to Dec 31st. During that period you can only burn from 5pm to 7am and you have to clear 10 ft around the burning area. We saw the first hint of snow flurries in the mountains this weekend. I need a couple of nice weekends to get some work done before snow starts falling!

If someone posted a video of themselves gathering free natural gas in their backyard - and then taking that free natural gas and putting it into a pile - and then taking that pile of free natural gas and they lit it on fire , , , , , If someone were to do that, I would call them an idiot. Now I'm not going to call you an idiot because you have taught me a lot of things and I like you. But it did give me some serious chest pains seeing you waste all of that good fuel.
