We are in Houston, make 150k, and live VERY WELL on half of our income. We don't feel like we go without anything we want and all of our needs are met. We invest 30% and save a lot in sinking funds for vacations, future cars, etc. Live simply. All the excess is not necessary. They can make it pretty much anywhere on that salary if they would cut all the boujee excessiveness that I suspect is happening, because for real... who thinks 500k is not enough?! lol

We make 120 in Canada and it is defintley a struggle. Old cars paid for in cash . The main high costs are the mortgage, house insurance, property taxes and groceries. Also because hubby's job takes $700 a month for retirement and it isn't optional.

Unless you are a doctor have no clue what you’re talking about. The multiple vacations that we take throughout the year of her mental health, enter prevent burnout. This particular physician is in critical care which means on a daily basis. She is dealing with extremely sick and dying patients often requiring multiple rounds of CPR throughout the day, and stat intubation. People outside of the medical field do not understand what we go through and the mental drain and trauma that we deal with. The vacations that are taken or not frivolous, and for the simple fact of blowing money it’s to get your mental health back and to allow your mind to recuperate. Allow you to do your job well. It’s easy to be insensitive when you think people have an excessive amount of money. However, I can guarantee if you did for only an hour what this woman does on a daily basis, you would run away, screaming change is hard for anyone and as positions you are taught to put a lot of emphasis and time on thinking out decisions, and typically do not make abrupt/impulsive choices. This woman is doing the right thing by asking for help and getting an outside opinion.

I'm not a doctor but even I know there are ways to rewind without blowing large amounts of money. If you have the money and are in a great financial situation then blow some money and have fun but the caller was worried about dropping her salary from a ridiculous amount to a slightly less ridiculous amount. Kind of hard to take anyone serious in that situation. Anyone with half a brain would know what to do in that situation but you can't learn common sense in medical school. I've heard that there is an actual correlation between your wealth and how you view yourself. You're always comparing yourself to others who have more than you. When you have more, you tend to be in areas of people like you. It also gets to a point where you just have so much money that the psychology of it can make you see people as "less than." In my city, market rents have gone up nearly 32% in a year and they likely won't go down any time soon. I've been in my current apartment for 13 years, which is rent controlled - this gives my landlord a huge incentive to try to get me out so they can raise the rent. If I need to find a new place, my rent would immediately be doubled, if not tripled. I would also need to start paying utilities because nothing is inclusive in today's world. We have a huge housing crisis in this province and competition is severe so I would also face the barrier of not having a good credit score because I haven't used credit in decades and I'm effectively 'credit invisible' at this moment. It would actually be a HUGE mess if my landlord is successful in evicting me (and it wouldn't be because of rent arrears).

She also said she felt like she'd be choosing herself over her family's future. In addition to a 30%-40% pay cut, she said they'd be moving to a place with a higher cost of living. So, she's just nervous about cutting their lifestyle by probably something like 50%.

People don't understand doctor culture. They all compete on what private school their kids go to, what fancy car they drive, what neighborhood and where they take vacations. And unlike business owners or corporate employees who get high incomes by wisely managing their or another businesses money, doctors earn a lot of money by learning a lot about medicine, not finance. The result is a real lack of perspective. That's why a lot of grifters prey on doctors

Medicine is essentially symptom suppression and doesn't necessarily fix the exact cause of the problem. What's holding her back is not wanting to change her habits, including her finances. People create their problems then try to justify their way out of them.

For someone in the medical field not to know that the Northeast is one of the best areas for that field is amazing. Jobs galore from Philly to Boston. Much higher cost of living , but I'm sure her salary would be adjusted accordingly. My guess is she is really attached to her extended family.

I agree with their advice, and I would also add that once they narrow down two to three towns/cities where they would be willing to relocate to, conducting additional research (taxes, crime mapping, amenities/groceries, optional transportation- just in case, other) is necessary. Also, visiting the area is helpful to see if it is a good fit. Something may look good on paper, but unless you see it, you are not doing your due diligence. Last, if they have to scale back on some of their luxuries, in order for her health to improve, then so be it.
