One of those too powerful to keep around civilizations that magically got forgotten after credits roll. Talosians, Metrons, First Federeration, Shore Leave builders, the Guardian of Time, ...and that was just season 1.

The First Federation is wily. UFP races probably weren't contacted because we might seem like simpletons to them. That doesn't mean they weren't watching us. They were also no doubt also aware of the ascended races in the galaxy. They are mentally a half step above us. We're like their wacky neighbor. The whole thing had to be a set up. They abducted a Starfleet officer to study and made it look like it was his own idea. That we entered their space was probably an event of their own choosing as a way of making first contact. Perhaps the Enterprise was chosen because it interested them. It's such a great Star Trek episode because Kirk is put in a no win situation and still finds a way to win. Quite amusing. I don't we can engage them in such a straight forward way as getting them into a treaty. It might be a little too simple minded to them.

We had a model of this ship back in the 70's. There were no other Star Trek models or toys displayed and only a couple of us kids were fans of the show in the household. It hung right above the breakfast table in the kitchen and you could light it up with a swtch on the wall.

By the Federation's and Starfleet's own rules revolving around the Prime Directive--the Federation isn't ready to join THEM! Certainly the same goes for sharing technology, It's like the snooty advanced aliens from VOYAGER who theoretically could have transported Voyager halfway across the galaxy. Similar rules caused them to treat tech sharing with Voyager like Starfleet treats less advanced races. The First Federation are like the Metrons in that someday the Federation will be worth dealing with, but not yet. The First Federation being highly advanced, but not yet godlike, still mortal enough to at least deign to talk to the primitives, maybe trade some low end items--but join with them? THAT being said, on the other hand, there is also a powerful sense of 'hollowness' to both the Fesarius and the First Federation. I do see them as a contracted, 'Fallen Empire' sort of interstellar civilization. I don't see the Fesarius as this magnificent and grand starship; to me the 'Fesarius', the TRUE Fesarius WAS the comparatively tiny craft Balock made his revelation known. When Balock took Kirk and company on the tour, he was showing them THE ship. What was the rest of the great big golf ball? To me, it was a shell designed to impress and frighten. Sure, it was probably powered and had devices, weapons and shields and stuff, but really, it was 90% a fraud. EVERYTHING that Balock before his big reveal might be a fabrication. So even the First Federation's existence and nature is unknown. The First Federation might well just be a small collection of star systems inhabited by a decadent civ in long decline. Advanced to be sure, but not as advanced as they'd lead outsiders to believe, in systems that are resource strapped and everything is recycled. They might well have weapons to defend themselves, but their first line of defense is a 'scarecrow' giant ship. So, I sort of suspect that by 32nd C Starfleet standards, the Fesarius is like a parade float; a little, simple vehicle with a lot of dressing.

In the ShatnerVerse Dark Victory novel, Kirk knows the location of the Fesarius home shipyard inside an asteroid near the Federation space. It was large enough to house over dozen Fesarius class ships inside it and there were already some built when the Ent-E went there. After the end of the novel, Starfleet took possession of the shipyard. Since the First Federation already has a lot of them&doesn't require a lot of resources to make more, they can spare one for Kirk.

I've always wondered whatever happened to the First Federation. I had assumed they were one of those TOS era hyper-advanced races we see only once and never talk about again, like the Metrons. It reminds me a lot Babylon 5 and their "Elder Races". Had their presence persisted, maybe they could have become like the Vorlons of the Federation? I imagine that, if they had said "Yes", it would have just been to keep and eye on us and/or influence us. Maybe I should read that story. Balok, tho. 😕Trying to reconcile Balok with anything just sort of sucks 😄

I don't know if the First Federation was mentioned during the Dominion War arc in DS9 (during the run of the show or in Beta cannon), but I can see the Dominion initially thinking they could bully the First Federation into submission if they didn't sign their non-aggression pact treaty that was offered to non-Federation governments. After all, look how small the First Federation was in comparison to the Dominion, the UFP, as well as the Klingon and Romulan Empires. Surely that means they are only able to handle a few planets.... 😉

Ah I wondered what this was about when encountering the system in Star Trek Online. In a philosophical approach, people raise the question of what still drives a federation that has achieved, experienced and seen perhaps everything there is to experience. Could you have achieved immortality with your knowledge and what would you have been doing all this time? At some point, a consciousness has experienced everything, even if the body is still mortal. I assume that they have found a way to let their minds grow with the progress of technology, instead of technology leaving the mind behind. There are some interesting thought experiments that "accompany" humans as the universe progresses. A universe that eventually dies, so that there is no more energy left that can be utilised for continued digital existence of thought itself - aka being alife. These people do not have significantly more developed consciousnesses than we do and therefore aware of the end try to delay it as much as possible until it eventually ends. So it is a rather sad story. However I imagine with a endless increase in processing power consciousness at some point becomes something different. This went way deeper than I planed. But still... the hell are they doing all day not leaving home at all?

If this extended civilisation had mastered FTL long before we had mastered bipedal locomotion, then it is reasonable to imagine that they would have explored other galaxies, possibly many (as in thousands, maybe millions) by the time humanity had even started developing the very earliest FTL capability. This would also apply to rapid information transfer, so although we are told that their "debating process" is slow owing to the need to include all their people (on presumably an equal right to be heard platform), this is unlikely to be the case, since they could (and no doubt would) have the means to debate inclusively, yet amazingly quickly. The reality is that, as an almost certainly pan-Galactic association, the UFP would provide very little interest to them. They are so very far ahead of us that the gap is for all intents and purposes insuperable. A gap that is tens of orders of magnitude greater than that between the local gardening club, and the United Nations!
@TriAngulumAudioStudios
@TriAngulumAudioStudios 3 ай бұрын
Well no, you are incorrect on all fronts! Just because you can do a thing (Travel FTL) doesnt mean you Have to do that thing! And they didnt! After the disappointing exploration of the Galaxy, the First Federation merely turned inward, shut their borders and worked on bettering themselves... And as the video already said, they indeed had a slow debating process being a direct democracy!

@@TriAngulumAudioStudios Well, I don't follow Star Trek at all, so the associated lore is meaningless. In a "real" reality, I certainly expect my suggestions to be correct, and such a civilisation to eventually be pan-Galactic. In effect a Kardashev Level 4 (or maybe even 5) civilisation. It might also eventuate that such a civilisation may no longer be corporeal in any sense, and may have more in common with the Cosmic AC in Asimov's "The Last Question".

By the time they decide to join the federation, most of all their important technologies would have been independently invented by the United Federation of Planets ! We would get a few interesting and unique techs, but likely most of the important stuff would be on the verge of being brokethrough or already discovered ! So basically, I don't think we would get much use from them if they joined. Seems like they would become nothing more than a protectorate. A place we are forced to defend without them helping us when we need it ? Unless by joining the Federation you automatically sign up to provide ships for the UFP ? I know there would at least be resource sharing by all members to get the ships built, but does the membership include using your own ships in defend of the UFP ? Is it just me or would it be bad for him to send a dreadnought fur friendly negotiations. It would make a lot more sense to send the Enterprise or another Constitution class starship with a diplomatic team. That to me is a recipe for disaster using a Dreadnought in much the same way as on Babylon 5 with the first Contact between Earth Alliance and the Minbari, due to a misunderstanding because they had their gun ports open. In my opinion United Federation of planets sending a Dreadnought to meet with first Federation would carry the same message.
@TriAngulumAudioStudios
@TriAngulumAudioStudios 2 ай бұрын
Yes it's just you for several reasons! First, the Federation was no threat to the First Federation, so it wouldn't matter WHAT vessel class they sent. Second, this was second contact, not first, like the B5 Situation, with the First Federation already well informed about Starfleet and the UFP! Third (and Lastly) Starfleet wasn't sending a Dreadnought to intimidate or fight the First Federation, but rather to show them a more advanced Vessel design they had, trying to close the gap (unsuccessfully) Tech-wise, between them. So in the end, your logic is flawed for those very specific reasons!

That's why it was memory-holed and never seen again.

Sorry, but you're incorrect on ALL fronts... First off, The Corbomite Maneuver was NOT the first regular episode aired after being picked up, that honor fell to The Mantrap, with Mudds Women, The Enemy Within, The Naked Time, Charlie X, What Are Little Girls Made Of and Dagger of the Mind and Miri ALL airing before this episode... So that's your first mistake. Second, The Corbomite Maneuver is a fan favorite episode, with the majority of fandom loving it... Making your "mistep" comment also just plain wrong! Lastly, it was never "memory-holed" as you said, but simply not something they decided to pick up on again as they didnt need too! The Original episode did it's job on its own and TV at the time didnt often revisit storylines that were all tied up nicely by the end of the episode... So all way round, your comments are jyst wrong, and all you have is a personal dislike for an episode that fandom as whole loves! So You can dislike Voyager all you want but a) Your personal opinion is just that, a personal opinion that does not coincide with the majority and b) You've got nothing factually to back that opinion up!
