Verb (ない form) +ものだ
It is used when giving advice or preaching about social and moral norms, rather than expressing personal opinions.
(常識からみて)〜するのが当然だ / 〜するべきだ
(常識からみて)〜しないのが当然だ / 〜するべきではない
上司には敬語を使うものだ。
→上司には敬語を使うのが当然だ / 敬語を使うべきだ。
You should use polite language with your boss.
悪口は言うものではない。
→悪口は言わないのが当然だ / 言うべきではない。
You shouldn’t speak ill of others.
It's difficult to use this phrase for matters of common sense when they do not reflect the speaker's values, such as laws or regulations. This phrase is used when giving advice or preaching about social and moral norms, rather than expressing personal opinions.
× 駐車違反をしたら、罰金を取られるものだ。
If you violate traffic rules, you'll be fined.

In Japan, you should arrive at least five minutes before an appointment.
In spoken language, "もんだ" is often used.
約束の時間に遅れそうなときは、事前に連絡するもんだよ。
If you're going to be late, you should contact them beforehand.
結婚式に参加する人は白い服を着ないもんなんですよ。
The person who attends the wedding should not wear white clothes.
In negative form, "ものではない" (or "もんじゃない" in spoken language) is more commonly used than "ないものだ."
音を立てて、スープを飲むものではない。
You shouldn’t slurp your soup loudly.
そんな服装で、会社に行くもんじゃないよ。
You shouldn't go to the office dressed like that.
