I love how the British governor said bring me the stool to sit upon. When tou are crushing another imperial power and you are an imperial power, symbols of that power that the enemy empire possesses must be taken.

If there isn't a wooden Athena or owl statue, a golden stool will have to do.

Great video and good work. Just wanted to add that the Ashanti did have horses and even formed a cavalry (a terrible one). The tsetse fly nullified horse breeding but horse riding was very common. Okomfo Anokye played another important role when he drew the Ashanti constitution in the 18th c. with a total of 77 law codes. Also, it would have been great to mention the Peace Party vs Imperial Party that dominated the Ashanti politics. In the 19th century, the Peace Party managed to influence Ashanti to seek trade and peace over war. For a long time, Ashanti rarely waged war. The Imperial Party came back in the 1870s when the state was failing because it was believed peace had made the state weak. Finally, the Ashanti King today is just ceremonial. Constitutional powers are zero.

Splendid stuff. If asked, I wouldn't have thought an African football association was 100 years old yet, good to know. Worth mentioning that HMS Ashanti managed a visit pre WW2

‘The Portuguese are buyers of slaves and gold’ ‘You need structures in place to transport these things to the coast’ ‘Yes’ ‘And to sell them and regulate the trade’ Are slaves ‘things’ and do we need to ‘sell them’?
