VN24 - 27.04.2021 - Unna / Germany - On Tuesday (April 27), a serious traffic accident occurred on the A1 freeway between the Dortmund/Unna interchange and the Kamen Zentrum junction. Three people were injured in the accident, two of them seriously.
At around 1:35 p.m., a 33-year-old truck driver from Poland was driving his tractor-trailer on the middle lane of the three-lane A1 in the direction of Bremen (northbound) despite an existing ban on overtaking. When changing lanes to the right lane, he apparently overlooked the stuck traffic in front of him and hit the truck of a 43-year-old driver without braking. Due to the force of the impact, the tractor-trailer of the 33-year-old driver was deflected to the right and crashed into the crash barrier. Here, the truck came to a halt in an inclined position in the area of the adjacent embankment. The man trapped in the cab had to be freed by the fire department.
A 42-year-old driver, who was traveling in the right-hand lane at the same time with his small truck, had to avoid the scene of the accident and drove into the middle lane. In doing so, he apparently overlooked the car of a 60-year-old man approaching from behind, which crashed into the motor vehicle with its passenger side at the height of the drawbar. The 62-year-old female passenger in the car was seriously injured. Rescue helicopters airlifted the seriously injured driver of the tractor-trailer and the female passenger of the passenger car to hospitals. The driver of the car was also taken to hospital by ambulance as a precaution. The others involved were uninjured.
The A1 highway had to be completely closed in the direction of Bremen for about 6 hours while the accident was being investigated and the semitrailer was being recovered with the aid of a crane. Extensive closures from the Dortmund/Unna intersection led to a peak traffic jam of about 15 kilometers.
