A real old fashioned football match. No play acting and working class heroes out on the pitch as opposed to modern overpaid primadonnas. Blood and thunder on the pitch and then handshakes at the final whistle. I was surprised Banks was still keeping goal for England in 1972 as he was getting on a bit by then and Shilton was in the wings by this point with Clemence coming along a year or two later. Such a shame so many of these legendary players are no longer with us but it's good these tapes still exist to revisit these simpler times.

The early seventies until 1974.Great kits,still crowds of a130,000 plus at Hampden and 100,000 at Wembley for the big matches.After 1975 the kits got flashy with the usual flashy clubs ,Chelsea,Tottenham etc wearing them Arsenal,Liverpool and Manchester Until kept to the traditional kits until that decade of tack the 1980s.

See a lot of comments about the attendance of this game being 134,00. The actual attendance was 119,00. I remember this vividly because this was my first Scotland England game as a ten year old at the time. Also attended the Scottish cup final of that years between Celtic and Hibs which had an attendance of only 106,00! Stood on the north enclosure on two cans of McEwans beer supported by my old man.

However I would suggest that any football fan who has followed the game for many years would agree that the four players I mentioned over the course of their careers certainly proved themselves to be truly world class players.

The late Alan Ball was one of the columnists in the very popular football magazine "Shoot" which first appeared in 1969.Ball wrote in one of his columns about the clash with Scotland in the 1975 Home Championship match at Wembley. Sadly that match was to be Alan Ball's last game for England as he captained England to a 5-1 crushing defeat of the Scots.Ball quipped,"I was often on the losing side when I face the Scots but only once in 1967."

That Home Championship between Scotland and England at Hampden Park was the late Gordon Bank's last appearance for England. It was the late Alan Ball who scored the winning goal for England to give the visitors their first win over the home team since 1966.

There was actually rather a lot of trouble between the Scotland and England fans at this match. Huge numbers of footie fans went to Hampden especially from places like Manchester, and particularly from the 'geordies' from Newcastle. The England fans also went into the jocks main end at Hampden , which was unheard of and raised a lot of eyebrows. Apparently the fighting continued for most of the match. For those that don't know, hooliganism by footie fans was rampant in those days.

Hoots! First time this Jock has seen this one since I was abroad in the Army '72 slogging my gaiters out in the Bahamas. Had a ball, unlike Scotland! Tho only highlights it looked a pulsating match in the Scotland England Wars. It was a full Hampden & enjoyed the internecine Club battles. Tough but fair. Ish. This Game has reminded me of what football in Britain was like in the 70s, at first appearance it looks disjointed to modern eyes like the player lack skill with wayward passes, no one wanting the ball to driving through the midfield with said ball at their feet, but there is some else going on that camera doesn't pick up and that is fear. I played football in the 70s and 80s in the UK and let me tell you players didn't lack footballing skills no, it was a totally different game, and the name of the game was don't get caught. if you dwelt on the ball too long you got clattered, if you passed the ball and didn't move quickly enough after passing it you got clattered, if you didn't have eyes in the back of your head a player would kick through you at the ball like your legs weren't even an obstacle and all of this seemed to be legal if you complained to the ref his stock reply was "get up lad stop complaining, its a mans game"! The only real football was played in the last 20 minutes of games when the enforcers were too tired to tackle you.

The capacity was 134.000 at the time. 2 years before there was 136.000 at the Celtic v Leeds European semifinal. 149.000 in 1937 and 1939 with a guaranteed 20.000 at least going over the wall and bursting the exit doors down and flooding in. The design of the stadium at this time had been measured to hold 183.000. Capacity was cut back after the Burnden park disaster in 1948.

The Wembley 1st Leg of the Euro 72 quarter finals clashed with the final day of the League season the FA Cup Final was the following week with the 2nd Leg of the Euro 72 Quarter Final the week later in Berlin then the Home Internationals started on 20th May and the Northern Ireland matches were played away due to the Troubles which meant the Northern Ireland home games in the 1974 World Cup Qualifying campaign, home Friendlies and the 1973 Home Internationals were played in England

Very sad he passed away last year I thought the whole 1966 squad were God then and in fact thought we were stronger in 1970.That was a Fab era for football and the Home Internationals were Fantastic always remember Derek Doogan and George Best playing for Northern Ireland. Finally England ended their six years jinx of never having won at Hampden with a 1-0 win in the 1972 British Home Championship.Alan Ball scored the winning goal for the visitors.Ball,was one of the three survivors from England's 1966 World Cup winning side featured in this clash at Hampden Park but it was to be Gordon Bank's last appearence for his country.Several months later,Banks would lose the sight of one of his eyes in a car crash in October and that would eventually ended his England career. But Ball's winner was England's first at Hampden since England last won there winning 4-3 just before the 1966 World Cup finals. As for Scotland it didn't just end there yet.In February the following year England would win again in a centenary match marking the hundred years of the birth of the England FA this time with a thumping 5-0 score in an icy pitch at Hampden Park.

Bobby Clark, of Aberdeen, was 'keeper that day. Peter McCloy and Stuart Kennedy, both of Rangers, got caps in the 70s as did Ally Hunter of Celtic. Evan Williams, Celtic 'keeper at the time, certainly should have been capped too but was never picked.

I was brought up looking forward to the Home Internationals, I really miss them, it was England who were the ones that objected to them claiming that it made the EFL season too long. So, it was scrapt. (Me? I'm English) But then again, not really sure that The Home Inters, had that much impulse for the present set up. Probably yes. Obstruction I believe it comes under. Calling for the ball when the opposition have the ball to hoodwink them into passing to you used to be a rule, is it a rule anymore? I’m not sure. Someone young will have to answer that question.

It was probably for calling for the ball but not giving his name - eg "my ball" or "leave it", "I got it". You have to give a name - such as "Colin's" or "Norman want's". The only exception is that Banks or Clark would have been allowed to shout "Keeper's" or "Keeper's ball"

Funny thing, as I now recall it playing junior football, instead of just wearing a shirt that fitted you regardless of number, the coach would say: “Machin you’re playing centre ‘alf” and throw me the number 5 shirt. And you’d get a fat kid at left back looking like a sausage in a number 3 shirt and a slight lad playing right wing in a two man tent with 7 on it. Crazy. By the end of my days playing ‘veterans’ the club just had a kit numbered 1-15 and everyone grabbed a shirt that fitted regardless. Does anyone recall if it was a rule, like in Rugby?

Frank Machin Ha, I liked those anecdotes. There wasn’t a rule concerning numbers, it was convention both nationally and internationally apart from squad numbers at tournaments. Johann Cruyff played with no.14 his whole career. However, I never saw other than 1-11 in a starting line-up before 1992 in League football in England or Scotland.
