Hard to believe that by 1983, we were both tied for number of wins each! a population difference in the tens of millions. Yet we matched England, blow for blow, for over a century:) miss these games being an annual thing. Only made it to Wembley once, but you could never forget the experience.

Agreed. Always felt there was even more we never saw. His long throw ins were amazing. Not the only one who did it but he did it without all the arm windmilling. Was also at the game, about 2 years before this game where he was injured and out for about a year. There was a terrace story that Mr Nicholson got the defenders to rough him up in training.

@David Broadley Not so. The Welsh FA deliberately picked Anfield as they would receive more gate money than if the game had been played in Cardiff. Sad but true. Also Welsh fans had kicked off against Yugoslavia a year earlier so Ninian Park was already excluded as a venue.

For me the contrast with current games is the way players have to be knocked down and don't go looking for it. Watching this is a refreshing change from the gamesmanship which has gradually infected our football so that you can barely watch a game without feeling that players now cheat as a matter of course. I think young people should watch this and see how the game should look - unfortunately it is irretrievable.

The England line up for this 1971Home Championship with Scotland at Wembley was as usual typical of Sir Alf Ramsey. Ramsey fielded no less than five of his 1966 World Cup winners won 3-1 with Martin Chivers scoring a brace.

Martin Chivers looked as good as Harry Kane does today sharp assured and deadly with most shots at least on target.I remember watching the game on TV and at the time thinking Scotland were disappointing but fair play to England score was about right as Bobby Clarke would definitely have saved the penalty that never was.

How did England not qualify for the 1974 World Cup with that talent?
@seanscanlon9067
@seanscanlon9067 4 жыл бұрын
Because from the 32 countries trying to qualify from Europe, there were nine groups, made up of five with four teams in them and four with three teams and England were in one of the three team groups. They only lost one of their four games, the same as the group winners but with fewer games, there was less wiggle room to recover from any setbacks. Other group winners in four team groups also lost a single game but were still able to recover with more games played overall.

@C0NTR4B455 to be fair, there was a reason behind Bobby Moore's mistakes against W Germany in 1972. Roy McFarland was selected at 5, but Clough withdrew him at very short notice, leaving no other obvious centre half in the squad. So Ramsey had to put Moore at 5 & Norman Hunter at 6. Moore hadn't played 5 since he was a kid. So it's a bit unfair to blame it on him, he was in an unfamilar position. He did go a bit after 1972, but was still a great player overall

LAST SEASON BOTH TEAMS DREW 0-0 AT HAMPDEN PARK JUST BEFORE ENGLAND THEN THE WORLD CHAMPIONS EMBARKED ON A LATIN AMERICA TOUR OF ECUADOR AND COLOMBIA AS A WARM UP FOR THE 1970 WORLD CUP FINALS IN MEXICO.A MATCH SCOTLAND COULD HAVE WON AS THE HOME TEAM WERE DENIED A LEGITIMATE PENALTY. BUT IN THIS 1971 HOME CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH AT WEMBLEY ON 22 MAY,THE HOME TEAM CAME OUT ON TOPS WINNING 3-1. THE SCOTS ALTHOUGH THEY GAVE SOME SEMBLANCE OF A FIGHT WERE IN THE END DEFEATED WITH ENGLAND SCORING THROUGH MARTIN PETERS AND A BRACE FROM MARTIN CHIVERS. ENGLAND WERE IN THE MIDST OF THEIR NATIONS CUP CAMPAIGN BUT THIS 1971HOME CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES WITH WALES,SCOTLAND AND IRELAND SHOULD SERVE AS A WARM UP FOR THE NATIONS CUP TIES WITH MALTA,GREECE AND SWITZERLAND.ALLAN CLARKE CAME IN AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR FRANCIS LEE. AS TYPICAL OF SIR ALF RAMSEY HE FIELDED NO LESS THAN FIVE OF HIS 1966 WORLD CUP WINNING SIDE.BANKS,MOORE,BALL,HURST,BALL AND PETERS WERE SURVIVORS FROM THE 1966 WORLD CUP TRIUMPHANT ENGLAND LINE UP.

@MCBhangramuffin Fair point mate but look again at Moore trying to play his way out of defence in Katowice against Poland in '73.Maybe it was arrogance or just supreme confidence in his abilities but he was getting caught out and gifting chances..Still, of course, a great player in his day..I kinda think that the loss of B Charlton to Ramsey's England was crucial.The decline in England's fortunes post 1970 seemed to coincide with Charlton's international retirement (or was it just coincidence?)

8.09 and Bobby Moore stuff ups = this is one reason England failed to progress past Germany in the EC 72 and Poland in the WC qualifying final (see his goof in away leg highlights). Bobby did something similar in the box against Germany in the 1st QF leg. Then against Poland he tries to take on a Polish attacker in a one vs one situation in defence and lost it. The legs went, Alf couldnt shake off his puppy dog loyalty to the man and replace him as he should have in 71.

He was also at fault for West Germany's winner in the WC 1/4 final in 70 for which Bonetti got most of the blame. I think you have the time on this video wrong though. Excellent as he was for years, I think in selective public memory he's become slightly overrated. Whereas Scirea of Italy tends to be underrated while Zoff gets greater credit.

BUT AS YOU SAY shy, the great man was making far too many errors and should have been dropped prob. from 1970 on. In fact I have checked out a lot of his games thereafter on y/t and he was blundering consistently even up to 1977 with Fulham, sorry to say game after game. You may remember some howlers during the w/c qualifiers 1974 plus friendly games. And there was the game which will have you cringing with embarrassment, Fulham 1 Notts Co. 5. Prob. Bobby's worst ever game, excruciating. Alongside Best and Marsh, they were living on past memories.

The interesting thing about it, looking back today, is how little the predominately right-wing (and, certainly by the late 1970s, already Murdochised) England fans cared about the Scots, rarely even bothering to attend the match at Wembley and treating it with bored disdain. With the general anti-Scottish feeling that has become part of the "Engerland" mentality in recent years - and which really wasn't there pre-1997 - there might be more edge *on both sides* if the fixture was revived now.

As your comment was made 11 years you may well have died or emigrated to Australia by now, but all the same, what a load of bollocks. Thatcher did not become PM until 1979 up until which we had predominantly Labour Governments through the 1970s. As I recall, the main reason for England fans staying away was the hoards of Scots that used to travel and cause a bucket load of trouble. As for the "Engerland" mentality I doubt very much there was any anti-Scottish sentiment in the 1970s in contrast to the attitude of the Scots who seemed to care more about beating England than qualifying for a world cup. Who can forget the "Remember Bannockburn" banners the Scots brought to Wembley. Nor the time they invaded the pitch and wrecked the goalposts. Anti-Scottish sentiment has only really grown since devolution. Scottish nationalism is built on anti-English bigotry and the eternal whingeing of the "indulged child" that is Scotland has eaten away at the English who still to this day subsidise the Scots despite their conspiracy theories to the contrary. I have known a lot of Scots and to a man they cannot handle their ale, are up for a fight after a pint and a half, and talk complete and utter shite.

Just look at the line up for both teams. And throw in Wales and N Ireland. All 4 x teams = UK. Imagine how powerful a UK team of the 60's, 70's and 80's would have been. But toss it all away and play as states. No wonder the French and German masters controlling FIFA and UEFA were happy they play as individual states not representing their central government as the other 199 members of FIFA and 56 members of UEFA do.
@mizofan
@mizofan 7 жыл бұрын
Well it was as separate states that they started football internationals, wasn't it? But imagine 80 teams with Hansen, Souness, Dalglish and Rush (maybe Southall ahead of Shilton too) along with the best England players. Or in 68 and 70, Best and Law with Charlton. In the 70s Scotland qualified for world cups where England failed but a UK team could have gone a long way. Scotland had a conveyor belt of fine players in the 60s and 70s: McKay, Baxter, Johnstone, Bremner, Gray.... In 1958 all 4 home nations were among the 16 teams in the world cup. John Charles, Cliff Jones, Ivor Allchurch, Danny Blanchflower..and a great tragedy with Duncan Edwards and others dying young. More recently, left footers Giggs and Bale would have filled gaps in England's line-ups, for sure.

So in a grown up nation with the choice of either a) winning squat all alone or b) sharing in the spoils of victory....I know which I would prefer. Anyway if they too inbred to play as one as we do in the Olympics then so be it. I rather the current set up then having to negotiate with 3 other FA's that have such small minds\

It must have been great being an England player back then. The ball didn't even have to cross the line for a goal to be awarded, as West Germany, and Scotland, found out to their cost.

....haha..lol..very witty, made me laugh. tbh, I think it was very sensible refereeing as the ball would clearly have gone into the net WITHOUT the hand stopping it. Shame they did not use a white ball; would have been clearer if they had. tbf also, all the detailed replays show that the ball did NOT conclusively cross the line in 1966. should not have been given; the lino was way short, he would have needed to have been right up to the corner flag quadrant to have been able to give a fully considered decision. yes the ref came over and spoke a few words but really the roar of the cheering crowd seemed to make the decision for them. tbh, these days international football bores me to tears these days; I prob. look over the top of a newspaper whenever England play or flick around the channels. yawn, yawn, yawn...been like it the past 20 years, does not inspire me at all. Bit like the afro-latino league, ie the premier league, clubs buying trophies, NO genuine competition, sorry to say.

@@lennylaa1686 Another woeful attempt at a wind up. If you must try to wind folk up, it's best to make the winds up's at least verging on the believable. Going for a wind up where the only two options are it's a transparent attempt at a wind up, or you're so stupid you shouldn't be allowed access to a computer, is not the recipe for a decent wind up. 0/10. There doesn't appear to be much hope for you I'm afraid.

Come one mate. The ball isn't even close to the line, far less over it. The Scotland defender punches the ball, it hits the bar, and comes down a couple of feet outside the line. It would have been a clear penalty, I admit that, but there is absolutely no way that ball was anywhere near crossing the line.

If you're seriously trying to claim that ball might have crossed the line, because the camera's were in SD, then there's really no point in discussing anything with you, as you clearly have no interest in the truth. Next, you'll be claiming Geoff Hurst's second goal, of his one goal hat trick, crossed the line, because the film was in black and white! .

The first goal of the match should have not been allowed. Instead, a penalty should have been given to England. I presume the referee thinks penalties are a boring waste of time. It was incorrect to allow a goal. The ball was not over the line. 1966 revisited - But a poor decision.

It depends. Rangers fans are, on the whole, more to the political right than Celtic fans, though I don't want to go any further into *that* argument. But I do think that a lot of the anti-Scottishness that *does* exist in England is actually codified envy. After all, the English people who seem to be most anti-Scottish are also those who are most concerned about clear cultural identity, and *that* is something the Scots have much more of ...

This is worse than a colour blind game for me. I think it's red, but I can't see it when they dribble it. Why couldn't they use a white ball? Any matches with green and red jerseys are not much fun. And goalkeeper's kits are also a problem. Yellow and green are not such a contrast.

David Coleman implied that because it was going, all but for the clear hand ball, the referee could 'decide' to give it...apparently the ball having to cross the goal-line, which it clearly didn't, didn't come into consideration in 1971... Definite penalty, a booking in those days but a goal, not even a discussion. Not sure why Martin Peters was celebrating with such certainty...

Your talking pish ! Sure there was little interest in the home nations but the main reason was,and still is,there's actually no room in the calender for the games. As for Scots fans celebrations being to blame,frankly,that's laughable. If that were the case there wouldn't be an international competition played anywhere on the planet due to havoc England fans brought with them.
