I think the reason why most of the comments say that the first two cakes look so much better than the last, is because you'd expect those kinds of cake - simple and yummy - for a birthday celebration , family dinner table , anniversary etc They remind them of those things and so does the cake, so it feels closer to home, family ,friends you name it. On the other hand , we don't really expect cakes like the last one on a birthday party or a anniversary - Of course no one would say no to a cake like the last one, but its the kind of cake you see at a restaurant opening or a celebrities party I'd say? So we don't really connect it with anything rather than just a cake. Don't get me wrong it is a phenomenal cake, I wish I could eat it right now!

as a cake designer, this is really not accurate. the $1,120 cake is a custom designed made to order art piece, like a wedding cake.. if they would have just ordered a regular 10" round everyday cake from that bakery ( or any high end bakery) it would have been maybe $100 and you could then compare the flavors with was the point of this whole thing correct? Hell, I make cakes for $50.00 up to $3,000 they taste similar. the cost difference goes into the art work, sugar work and skill to make the stunning showpiece.
