My grandfather used to have a Citroen Light 15 (traction avant) just after the war and knew John. John used to fly his light aircraft from Biggin Hill to Le Touquet for weekends for the missus but also to bring back car parts for Citroens. This was long before Citroen was a popular car in the UK. Grandpa always said John was a real character. Someone who got things done even if it wasn’t always by the book….but was always a good guy who wanted to help others. I reckon I would have got on really well with John. RIP Mr Dodds and Grandpa

It consumes more than 100 l per hour in the aircraft (i don't know the numbers for the car), and up to 600 l per hour with full power demand . It's not only a big engine, it's supercharged with a two stage supercharger originally in the aircraft. For full power it needs 130 octane fuel, which is no longer produced regularly, but it can also be used without the second supercharger stage with 100 octane fuel. But i think it's power reduced in the car, the torque would rip the axle out of the chassis with full power

@@redroutemaster The legal action from Rolls-Royce was (quite rightly) to stop him referring to his car as a Rolls-Royce, since no major component was made by the company. The engine was made by Rover, named the Meteor, and was an unsupercharged licence-built Merlin adapted for powering tanks. As the car is wholly incompatible with the Rolls-Royce brand, the action was justified. Some years ago, I saw a Datsun 260Z with modified panels, and Ferrari badges, and script identifying it as a Ferrari 250GTO. I wonder if Fiat objected.
