If you must be different-and difficult about these options then only other option is .270 ! Everything in between , below and or over these 3 calibers are either over gunned or under gunned imo

I agreed with everything you said, right up to the point you started talking about long range hunting. (about the 20:46 mark) You even eluded to the difference in wound channel, which most people never talk about. You are correct in every point you spoke of. The only thing I don't like is long range hunting, aka; sniping. People don't think about the animal taking even a half of a step, bullet time in flight even if their aim was perfect, ha ha. It drives me crazy to see this crap on hunting shows. The sectional density and ballistic coefficient of a bullet are important. The SD and BC of a 6.5CM is outstanding, likewise the SD and BC of some of the .308 diameter bullets are good but not as good as the 6.5 bullets. I witnessed a ballistic gelatin test of a 6.5CM and a .308 WIN. I was surprised to see that the .308 did penetrate ever so slightly deeper. Here's the part that I was sure of, the wound channel of the .308 was easily twice that of the 6.5. Don't get me wrong, I do like the 6.5CM and it does have a small advantage, less recoil, bangs steel at longer ranges. It doesn't go sub-sonic, with some loads till it reaches approximately 1,200 yards. It slips through the air with the greatest of ease, blah, blah, blah. Here's the thing, if you poke a hole through the lungs of any animal, that animal will die.
@Rubicon17763 жыл бұрын
.308 for the win. You can split hairs over marginal external/terminal ballistic advantages between one cartridge over another but you can’t deny the practical advantages of the .308 Winchester over all of these mentioned and many not mentioned. 1. It’s plenty adequate when compared to any of them both in external and terminal ballistics 2. It’s most available in any ammo crisis situation 3. It’s the most cost effective 4. Available in all rifle platforms, Auto, Semiauto, bolt action, break action, pump action, lever action

My experience….. Both 270 and .308 are outstanding for long range take downs and power! 270 I’d use for wide open shots and .308 for long range with brush included. 270 will hit in brush and ricochet. 308 punches through brush and still make a spot on hit! 270 is just a bit faster….. All in all, they both are King for me for hunting and will take out anything in the U.S. with four legs! Have fun out there and use for your liking and use consideration what your shooting at wide open or brush!

"Ethicals" depends on how you shoot. It's opinion based. It's not factual. I've seen and have shot game farther than that and they didn't move much. The rage, it seems, is the 6.5 PRC for very good reasons. However, the 270 despite having a lower bc is no slacker and holds its own with the 308 and the new kid on the block at 500 yards and less. I need to stop drooling and appreciate what I have in my gun safe. Being a lefty complicates the available gun choices too. I need to lay cheek to wood and fondle the new trigger in my Remington 700 BDL and send a few down range with renewed interest and respect. I’ve had a whole bunch of rifles in different calibers and I’ve settled on the 270 and 300 WM. I load 130 gr Partitions and Hornady Interlocks in my 22” 270 and get 3000 fps. That’s my go to load for just about everything. My 300 Win Mag is for situations where a little bit more is needed. I run 190 gr Interlocks and 200 gr Partitions at the same speed of 2800 fps. I could easily run the 190 gr load faster but I was aiming for a slightly reduced load that can be used at both shorter and longer ranges. That 200 gr Partition will fully penetrate just about any game animal in the world and cause massive damage doing it.
@JTPyrus2 жыл бұрын

It's velocity advantage definitely translates into lightening type kills under longer distances as well as up close. Light recoil, it's shoots flatter ,and it hits harder with less wind drift too. Just look at the difference between the 130 gr 270 and the 180 gr 308 here. The 308 load is hitting almost 1” higher than the 270 load. If you show a 100 yd zero or an identical zero height at 100 yds you get a more practical picture of the true trajectories of each cartridge and load

If you hunt very open country it’s no contest, get a .270. The .280 is actually my preference, either Remington or Ackley, just due to the fact it can push slightly larger bullets. But the .270 is extremely close. The .308 is ok, but I’d pick a .30-06 instead. As a reloader I found the ‘06 much more flexible. Lots of compressed loads in the .308 and it doesn’t have the powder capacity of larger, long action rounds. I actually feel the 7mm-08 is a better short action cartridge than the .308. Better BCs allow a 7mm bullet to retain more energy at longer ranges. The .308 is pedestrian, common and ammo is cheaper because of its military background. It works. There are just many more capable cartridges out there, even not resorting to magnums.

The 308 was designed to be a military cartridge. It addressed the deficiencies of the 30-06 which by the 1950s was too long, too powerful. The 270 was a pure hunting cartridge derived from the 30-03 (Correct) and as Jack O'Connor said, had more than enough terminal ballistics, velocity and flat trajectory. I also had lower recoil. Though not as light as the 6.5s you could shoot it all day. It was not lost of Jack that the 270 was a faster 7x57 and that was no disadvantage. A 270 is nicer to shoot then a 7mm.

In my experience most 308 factory loads tend to be better compare to the 30-06 and the 270 loads because those cartriges are often watered down. Also I know most guys hunt with 22' barrel but a 24' barrel with a 277 bore allows for much much better performance if slow powder is used. Any 270 rifle with a 24' can push a 150 at 2900+ with ease and safely (single based powder) For example the only decently price 150 270 ammo I could found with a decent velocity was a Norma SP load at 2860fps from my Bergara 24 inch barrel but was 2740fps from my 22' barrel M17 Mauser sold later. Food for thought.

Had trouble taking an Eland down with a 270. No trouble at all with a 308. It might have been the bullet on the 270. A Hornady Interlock would have done a better job on the 270.

Depends on shot placement. I’ve hunted with guys that have done bad shots with a 300 win mag and they have trouble taking down deer, yet I’ve done a clean shot with a 223 on deer many times and only needed to shoot them once just depends

I like both but love what a 270 dose to varmints . Good splat factor even with 130gr. bullet. Lighter varmint bullets would be even better. Coyotes and woodchucks at longer ranges would no stand a chance with an accurate 270. It is so sexy.

@briandecker82903 жыл бұрын
Winchester super x 130 grain it’s what my 270 shoots the best. I am from Newfoundland there is an enormous moose population and it’s more common that someone in the house hunts then not. My dad has taken more moose with his 30/30 then most people will see in a lifetime. That being said 99% of them have been taken at less then 100 yards. If you use what you have .243 and up and stay within it’s effective range you will not have any issues with hunting moose.

Excellent analysis. I own a Rem 700 sporter c 1977 (gifted in mint very low round count) and a blueprinted Rem 700 Varmint 308 c2014. The 270's felt recoil is harder due to two factors; lighter weight of the rifle and IAW your analysis re: native recoil impulse. Curious to hear your comments on heavier .270 bullets e.g. 175gr Sierra GameKing.

One huge advantage of the 270 is that it’s not a military round nor is it used in AR type guns so it’s less effected by “ammo shortages.”

Choices given, I would choose the 270, in actuality It really depends on what you’re hunting for, and at what distance, PS once upon a time , hunting was sneaking up on an animal and making a humane shot, today all we hear about is people wanting to shoot animals at 300 yards up to 600 yards, in my opinion that type of shooting is great for target shooting ! I would rather make a humane shot at a closer distance, then I feel like it’s myself against the game, and who’s smarter ! Thats Hunting 👍

Great video but I think the thing that is always overlooked in these comparisons is the inherent accuracy of one round versus another. Because the case capacity and bore diameter of the 308 is such a perfect match the accuracy across the bullet weight range is remarkably good, that is not the case with the 270. The 270 is in a category of “overbored” cartridges, accuracy always becomes an issue (more of an issue) when using overbored cartridges. Of course a properly loaded cartridge can produce great accuracy but don’t expect to buy factory loaded ammo and get great accuracy, it might happen but most times it doesn’t.

What would your recommendation be for the "best" caliber for a beginner youth hunter (5' 9", 115 lbs)? It will be used for elk and mule deer in Arizona...
@Thebiggamehuntingblog3 жыл бұрын
Hm, that's a good question. Finding a good deer cartridge isn't too hard and there are many that will fit the bill. Finding an appropriate elk cartridge that still works well in the hands of a small framed and novice hunter (presumably you want something with minimal recoil) is harder. The 6.5 Creedmoor is a good choice, though I think it's a little on the light side for elk. It will absolutely work in that role though with good ammo, at shorter range (inside 200-250 yards), and with appropriate shot angles (broadside or slightly quartering). The 7mm-08 has a little bit more recoil than the 6.5 Creedmoor, but recoil isn't bad at all with it, plus it's also a little more powerful and gives the hunter a bit more room for error on bigger game like elk. Hope this helps!

How tf 130 and 150 .270 loads have the exact same recoil? That’s not correct! There’s something wrong with that data!
@Thebiggamehuntingblog Жыл бұрын
No, there's nothing wrong with that data. I rounded 21.17ft-lbs of recoil for the 130gr load up to 21.2, so you're correct that the 150gr load should indeed recoil a little more (and it does). I was trying to use handloads that come as close as possible to the performance of the factory loads I used earlier in the comparison. Other loads may recoil a little more or less for each bullet weight.
