Certainly a big job for one guy especially a 275 ,I'm an oil tech on the east coast of Canada in nova scotia certainly your regulations are different, we must install a dip tray under the whole length of the tank, only 2 feet from boiler, 2" fill no need of firomatics ,,outside tanks must be top feed with tiger loop inside,,great videos steve just started watching you just the past month

@@peterataconi4103 I am going to look-up a description of that dipping port. Thanks. My tank had what I call a snorkel tube. It intakes fuel about 5'' above the bottom to bypass any water. It gave me a surprise when I first drained the tank when I thought I had ran it dry! It had about 30 gallons of oil and water in it, yet.

Hey Steve, what’s a fair price for replacing an oil tank in the Boston area roughly? 275 gallons. No stairs can walk the tank right out the garage. Thanks.

I saw how an old man who was my neighbor did a MacGyver on his oil tank leak. He simply drove a small sheet metal screw into the hole. It lasted longer than he did. He also told me about when he was in Brazil as a naval aircraft mechanic. He said that they could use the foil from a pack of cigarettes to set the gap on the aircraft spark plugs. Well, we won the war!

The house i grew up in, in Illinois had one of these and my parents had it removed. How does this system work does someone come fill it up , is it like gas... maybe it was removed when gas was installed in the house... i dunno. I ask cause i dont know.
@orangie8426
@orangie8426 3 жыл бұрын
It's home heating oil. The heating oil composition is a lot like diesel fuel. You buy the liquid heating oil fuel from a company that delivers the heating oil via a tanker truck which pumps the heating oil into that in home tank like Steve just installed.. There is a pipe that feeds the oil from that in home tank to a burner which is attached to either a furnace or boiler. The burner has a pump that draws the oil from the in home tank to the burner and within the burner is both a spark igniter and a nozzle that sprays (atomizes) the fuel. The igniter lights the fuel creating a sort of flame thrower which is either used to heat up ducted fins (heat exchanger) inside a furnace, or heat up water in a boiler.. The rumble vibration you can often hear on above floors of a home when an oil furnace is running is the flame the burner produces. It's pretty much a flame thrower.
@pikadroo
@pikadroo 3 жыл бұрын
@@orangie8426 so, do they use like a long hose from the truck to where ever the tank is? In my case the tank was in the basement near a window, i can’t imagine someone feeding a hose end into the window then down to the tank. That seems like a crazy amount of effort. Is there just no natural gas in some areas and this is better/cheaper/ ect than propane?
@erikj.2066
@erikj.2066 3 жыл бұрын
@@pikadroo yes oil delivery trucks have a large diameter hose on a reel at the back of the truck, and a pump that meters the amount of fuel delivered. Natural gas is not available in allot of places in New England, and propane is typically more expensive to use.

I don't think that people understand that any water that gets into a tank like that will sit at the bottom for years and rot out a tank.
@craigharding475
@craigharding475 3 жыл бұрын
True. When i bought my place, I drained my outside tank dry (about 25 gal.) to get the water out, and installed a shut-off and a filter which it did not have. 35 years later no leak, so far. I asked if I should paint the tank black to discourage freezing. I was told "No", and to use aluminum paint instead to avoid condensation better. We are in VA. Proved to be good advice, but I have seen a few outside black tanks around. I wonder if Flex seal would work on that tank in the video. Any opinions?

I was point tech on call to oil not working, brand new Beckett furnace (nice). I replaced the Cu lines in dirt floor and primed and primed. Then worked on filter and lines, nothing still. They claimed the tanks were filled 2 weeks before so thought sludge was deep in tanks causing the problem. Had another set of eyes come and my Gosh, all 500 gallons had soaked all over the clay dirt floor and been absorbed, the tanks themselves were rusted through from the inside. The whole place stunk and the owners got a 12k bill for just the clay removal and then two new tanks, there was no floor drain fortunately. I was glad to be moved on to two heat pump jobs.
