Fun Fact: The C4 Corvette was so dominant at the Sports Car Club of America's series known as the Showroom Class, that BMW and Porsche, who were running the E30 and the 944, had six to seven full time German engineers at the races to see why the Corvettes were so dominant, consistently finishing First thu Fourth!! The series was set up as a showroom class because all you had to do was add a roll cage for safety and then shave the tires for track grip and go race! The Goodyear Eagle GT tires(Gatorbacks) that came on the Corvette, BMW and Porsche were the one of the first really super sticky, almost R compound tires of the day, taken straight from Formula 1s "rain tires" . The bone stock Corvettes were so unbeatable that the SCCA actually had to start a series called the "Corvette Challenge" because the Germans just couldn't keep up !

@@StayTunedTA They are on a different level. Everyone hates on them, but I just don't understand why, outside of raddles and plastic that can break. You can't beat that off the line TPI power, insane handling. The Z51 cars were even more next level, with the bilsteins, bigger sway bars, pusher/puller fans and a massive radiator, oil cooler, 12.7:1 steering ratio. and a better rear gear ratio. I think the wheels were 9" wide vs the regular 8, 8.5 wheels. Ok I miss mine now. You have a killer car!

A C4 Corvette has been a staple of my automotive bucket list for years, ever since I got to get up close with my neighbor's. I instantly fell in love with the LCD dash, and I'm a sucker for the pop ups and turbofan wheels. I want to build one as a Vette kart, but I want to try and retain some of the iconic C4 elements like those wheels, pop ups, and the dash, as well as trying to form the exoskeleton to mimic some of the shape and body lines. Such an awesome machine!

$14k would be steep pre-covid but I think prices have come up on the C4 a bit now that all the other go-to cars of the era have shot up in price. As was said earlier in the video. A $6k C4 would need way more than 8 grand to make it as nice as the low mile csr for $14k. I paid $4k for mine in 2020, I put over 20 into it. Most of that was in upgrades, but stuff like carpet, weatherstripping, digital dash repair all adds up pretty quick. Stay Tuned needs their own C4! Pick a driver quality one up, throw in a ZF6 or TKX and hop up that small block chevy.

Honestly the C4 corvette is my favourite of the bunch. That retro futuristic styling, wedge body shape, gorgeous turbine wheels, and clean lines are just wonderful. I know they break down, they're neglected, the instrument cluster is unreliable, they're slower than the LS cars, but they're just special feeling and looking.
@ratherbeboating10

Having driven a lot of them, the C4 ends up being the last... I don't know what the right word really is... I guess analog or traditional feeling one of the bunch... You drive it and go "okay... muscle car go kart." Not that the newer ones aren't better in every single way. It's just there is a level of rawness about it that makes it fun but it can still be tame and they drive really well. I'd personally want one of each but the C4 is an outlier for sure.

Excellent buy, I’ve always liked the C4 Corvette, I think it has the best tail lights and headlights. If you get some GM silicone weatherstrip lubricant and put it on all of the door gaskets and seals in that car it will make it nice and quiet again. The majority of all the little squeaks and rattles will go away. Plus if you go through with a Phillips screwdriver and a torque bit and tighten up all the little trim pieces etc. you will have a nice tight car Corvette again.

Rewatching this episode, it's one of my favorites. So much going on here. That 69 Satellite!!! All time dream car there. The Cummins swapped Ford. I'm a Ford truck guy so that thing is great. And of course, the C4. I was a little kid when that car came out, and I was not really a fan. At that time, it was hard not to compare it to a big block C2 with side pipes and think the Corvette had regressed in a big way. But lots of time has passed, and I gained some perspective. Now I love the C4, and that one is an exceptional example. I love that it was owned by one lady who clearly loved it for its whole life. Great stuff!

As a guy who is refurbishing a 1988 manual C4 coupe, I would say that this car was worth _every bit_ of $14.5k. People today just don't understand what a serious, well-engineered, world class sports car the C4 Corvette was. It was the C8 of its day, but that was 40 years ago and we had no internet back then. However, you can still look up period road tests in the Car&Driver archives, for example, and you just might be amazed at how good the C4 really is. They are incredible bargains hiding in plain sight today. A word of caution on a car like this one, though. Every original piece of rubber in it is now roughly 40 years old and needs to be replaced. That includes fuel lines, for example! Fire sucks... It also includes coolant lines, brake lines, suspension bushings, weather seals, etc.

Indeed. The C4 was a serious sports car where the earlier generation cars were more along with the muscle car tradition despite a few nods to thoroughbred ideas. In the early years the C4 comprehensively beat on track everything Europe and Japan could muster. It was the first production car to break 1G on the skid pad too, with street tires.

I’ve had my 1986 C4 for almost 30 years. The 383 it has now makes it. You should talk him into doing that. It sort of negates the 1986 smog detuning and makes it more competitive with today’s cars, and you can use the numbers matching block to do it. Late year alum heads mean roller block, one piece seal. With 27,000 miles, it’s clearance the block, change rotating assy, pick your cam AFR heads and hold on

Most people lump the C4 into the 'pig, stay away' category, but if you buy the right year models (ie from when the LT1 started, up to the LT4) they are a gem of a car to operate and service maybe bar a couple of things like Optisparks and leaky tops - but they are one time fixes, do it once and then it's done probably for the life of you owning the car. I reckon they look real tough looking at the front end with the pumped arches and sleek uncluttered bonnetline, especially with the Callaway models with the wider arches and fat 335 tank treads

Agreed, your paying for the cars condition. Plus with the prices of today's car where are you going to get something that cool for that price. Win win I say.

true, but pretty soon these are gonna go up in value after all the cheap ones are used up, and people realize what a impact this car actually has had on everything performance from cheverolet. It would have been the end if not for the c4. Love mine. wouldnt take 20 for it as it sits, and it sits pretty much as this one does with my own mods done to my taste which is all i care about.

@@funify11xAside from the historical significance of the C4, it's literally just an awesome car. People sleep on it because it "only" makes 245hp in this hp obsessed era. Except it does 0-60 in 5.5sec, has 340lb torque, weighs light, and has a 51/49 weight distribution. I've owned 400hp+ modern muscle cars but my C4 is easily the coolest car of the bunch. Exudes retro while being a good driving car, especially with the 6 speed manual You're right they'll go up in value as less and less will be available on the market while demand stays the same.

Those bolts came off pretty easy for a 37 year old Pennsylvania exhaust, that was last inspected in August of 92. Congrats on the purchase. 3 pedals, 4+3, red leather, best of friends; that's the awesome part.

Some of you might like to read the article I wrote for Corvette Enthusiast Magazine called "Deadly C4". It was about a black over red 86 coupe that was owned by a guy from New York. The previous two owners had died. The car was just as pristine as this one and had some tasteful mods. Unfortunately the guy who owned the car also passed away about 3 years after the article was published. It is great to see the original wheels on this car as most of the 84-87 wheels you see out there are severely oxidized. Nice job!

Just sold my 1994 with 28K on it (consignment sale) for about the same price. Red with black interior and a 6spd. Owned the car for 25 years but got tired of driving it. I'm tall and the cabin was uncomfortable for any sort of long trip. Loved the way it looked though. Bought an Alfa Romeo Giulia QV and I'm loving driving again. Love the channel.

Fun fact about the 86 Vette . It and the Firebird and Camaro all had the 3rd brake light mounted on the exterior glass. One year only. So you always know an 86 model by the 3rd brake light.
@jeffflaig362
@jeffflaig362 Жыл бұрын
True about the Camaro and firebird but the Corvette had its third brake up there from 86 to 90. Then in 91 it moved to the bumper when they updated the car. Convertible always had them in the bumper. The zr1 kept it up too like the 86

I like the C-4 'Vetts. Great body style. I had a 1996 collector edition. One of only 5,000 built. Although it was low on power (300) it ran & handled well and had a great stereo. Two reasons I got rid of it was, 1) I had too many cars. 2) Just not enough leg room made it most uncomfortable to ride for more than an hour. I like to ride my cars. In fact, my Fiero has more leg room!!!

My son and I picked up an '89 6-speed. It was minty with 66k for $7500 in 2019 near the bottom of the market. His first car. I was looking for a C10 but they were out of our price range. It would have cost double to build something to the same level.

Life long C4 guy ever since I was 10 and saw the first 84 at Nalley Chevrolet in Atlanta. I have owned many and raced C4s for over 20yrs now.... Those radios were Bose systems with individual amplifiers on each speaker so the wiring can be interesting when converting to something aftermarket. They are an awesome base for building a modern but retro high performance car. You scared the f outta me with that Sawzall around the rear spring....
