@@MarkKnightSHG They found that London IS that quiet...for exactly 25-35 minutes in the very early morning which is when they shot that footage. It's also why the photography is so strange: they couldn't do guerilla filmmaking with 35mm so they went video and attached multiple cameras to the shooting area and editing the clips together and the results were based on where they could hang those cameras on location. Yes justice for Frank. He certainly didn't deserve that. The most amazing thing for me about this film is Jim, and how he develops throughout. In the end he shows that the greatest horror is unleashed rage with a fully functional human mind behind it. He turns his weaknesses into strengths. He exploits their regimented structure by being elusive, and using diversion. One guy ends up being more dangerous than the infected, or a platoon of infantry, and he does it without losing his humanity in the process.

This movie is so good, and was so unexpected. Great cast, obviously, with Cillian Murphy and Brendan Gleeson, in particular, being two of our best working actors. Ashleigh, there was a sequel called 28 Weeks Later, which also had an amazing cast including Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Robert Carlyle (if you haven't seen The Full Monty, you absolutely should), and Idris Elba. There was originally going to be a third one called 28 Months Later, if I recall correctly, but obviously that never happened. It's funny though, I think it was when he was doing the junkets for Oppenheimer, Cillian said he'd be open to doing 28 Years Later, which shockingly... this movie actually IS getting close to being 28 years old. Also: it's time for someone to send Ashleigh down the Danny Boyle rabbit hole. One of the best directors in the world.

This movie was so scary when it first came out. How fast the infection takes over someone is what freaked me out. You have about 10 seconds before they turn. In other movies like this it's usually a few hours or even days for someone to fully change. Here, it's mere seconds. You have ten seconds to put down your mom or husband or best friend or child. That's a horrendous scenario to imagine.

No spoilers here, I promise! Ashleigh, something you need to know about The Crow. No spoilers for the movie itself, but it's important to know, the lead actor, Brandon Lee, son of Bruce Lee, died during the filming of The Crow in a tragic prop gun accident. They had almost finished making the movie, held it for some time, then decided to complete it and release it. It is especially chilling considering, another movie released about the same time, Dragon: the Bruce Lee Story, included a scene where Bruce is fighting off a deadly family curse and trying to prevent it from getting to his son, a young Brandon Lee. He succeeds in the movie, but it makes Brandon's death during The Crow even more sorrowful.

I don't think I have seen another zombie film where the zombies can die without eating for too long, they can die like anyone else. A lot of people watched these kind of movies during the Pandemic. They felt relevant and cathartic knowing the characters are going through the exact same things we were at that time. That's the beauty of the horror genre. It's confrontational, and it forces the viewer to question, "What would I do in this situation?". There's a sense of reevaluation when it comes to dealing with our fears, and overcoming them. It tells the audience, in a way, that if the characters can get through it, so can you. Which is pretty comforting when you think about it. That's how I see it anyway.

One thing to keep in mind when watching this one -- it came out in 2002, so this was LONG before "I Am Legend" and "The Walking Dead" and "The Last of Us" etc. And it was long before the Covid pandemic. The film was extremely influential and really was the catalyst that sparked the whole "fast zombie" genre. I saw it for the first time in theaters when it premiered and I remember being absolutely terrified of the zombies. I found myself becoming paranoid about pandemics for weeks and even years afterward. But now that we're saturated with that kind of zombie story, it doesn't feel quite as novel and scary as it was then. Another that affected me in that way was "Contagion" from 2011. It's not a monster movie but I think even more terrifying in that it felt entirely plausible. Anyway, really loved your review as always!

Are the infected in 28 Days Later really zombies? The people are just infected with a rage virus. They are not "the dead" and they can still die after being infected. The creatures in I am Legend are not zombies. They are blood thirst mutants... Haha... Anyhow, zombie movies are great, love them, but they have never terrified me are causes any kind of paranoia. I think the movie had just came out on DVD and it was a random movie I picked out to watch while I was lying in bed sick and felt like I was dying.

Yeah I won't say this movie didn't influence movie companies to put out zombie and contagious monster movies. But there were "fast zombie" and stuff like that before in movie cinema that made some kind of impact. Return of the Living Dead from 1985 or Demons from 1986 and Even the Resident Evil video game that came out in 1996 with different kinds of zombies and bio-engineered creatures...

When you announced that you were watching both 28 Days Later and The Conjuring, I got so excited to see your reactions to them. 28 Days Later is more of an underground ish 'zombie' movie, it stands up really well in the genre. The Conjuring is gonna big scare you though...

Zombie movies are a great illustration of the difference between the UK and the USA. 28 Days Later: Survivors are walking through London fighting zombies with baseball bats. In case you haven't noticed: Frank was Mad-Eye Moody in the Harry Potter films. As for zombie movies in general: There's George Romero's Night of the living Dead, and sequels (and remakes). Then there's "Return of the Living Dead" (sorta related to Romero's stuff), and then "World War Z" withBrad Pitt, but it didn't do justice to the book (there are two zombie books: Zombie Survival Guide - faux survival guide written with the premise that zombies are real and coming to get you, and World War Z - a "chronicle" of the zombie apocalypse, from the initial outbreak to the end. And both were written by Max Brooks, son of Mel Brooks - you might want to pick them up, they are quite entertaining. And MOG YES! The Crow is an absolute must watch. RIP Brandon Lee.

This low budget, independent british horror film that was released with hardly any publicity, went on to change the rules for the whole horror genre... They filmed in inner city London around 5-6am. They had 40 minute windows. 10 minutes to set up scenes, tip the busses over, and everything. 20 minutes to film, and 10 minutes to tidy up . The motor way scenes were filmed by temporarily closing the roads in the mornings, and filming the empty tarmac. As CGI was just impossible, especially on their budgetv

YOUR NEXT MOVIE SUGGESTION: The french 2001 film "Brotherhood of the Wolf," which is set in pre-revolutionary war colonial era France. It's a period horror action movie full of plenty of flintlock gunfire, big colonial boots and bad guys getting kung fu kicked across the jaw multiple times in every fight scene. lol It's actually VERY dark (not just story and theme-wise, but its aesthetic is colonial-age Euro-gothic). I won't majorly spoil everything for you, but I'll say that there's a mysterious beast and the ongoing hunt to kill it, there's a native american character who comes to France from the Americas along with the main character, and the film has an obvious colonial-age wilderness adventurer culture feel with a palpably gothic touch. This film is also a very deep whodunnit investigation-heavy film, and also one that reflects both the respect and the disrespect that some versus others had for wolves, which always have been and always will be as vital to every wilderness ecosystem as sharks are to their native oceans. You'll see what I mean if you ever take my advice and finally react to this movie. And oh by the way, Monica Belucci plays the most dark and brooding character in the whole film. You'll see what I mean on that note too. The film itself is set just before and leading into what I think was supposed to be what to them would be the coming French Revolution of 1789 to 1799 at the very end. Anyway, will you PLEASE for the love of god react to this film! You won't regret it. And if you do, I strongly recommend you watch the English-dubbed extended director's cut. So much of it is missing from the heavily shortened theatrical release version.

The thing I remember about this movie being made, was how much disruption it caused around London Bridge. That's one of the busiest streets in London. They only got permission to close it for very short periods of time. It was a whole military operation to set up and get their shot before they had to open it back up to the public. People who are familiar with that part of London, watching this movie is even more unsettling BECAUSE of a deserted London Bridge.

I watched this when it came out in theaters and people were more surprised by the full frontal nudity in the beginning than all the bloody scenes. It's one of the better infection movies out there, it doesn't need a lot of jump scares which I always find to be a bit of a cop out in horror movies. I don't want my startle response to be what makes me scared. SOS wasn't used because Hello would indicate that they weren't infected instead of just needing help.

Welcome to one of Cillian Murphy's first roles. Very underestimated actor until recently with Oppenheimer. Highly recommend Red Eye. His first American role after this movie. This movie was very innovative for its time with the fast zombies. Also one of the few recent European films to breakthrough here in the states. This movie became very relevant again during the pandemic. I love these types of movies that questions whose the real villain here. Most zombie films are an allegory. The grandfather of the zombie genre, George Romero made Night of the Living Dead as a social commentary on the 1960s. Nowadays the question is how far is too far with science and technology.

It's one of only a handful of film scores I own along with Blade Runner, Braveheart, Dark Knight, October Sky, and Shawshank Redemption. I found one thing you said oddly intriguing: You said that you were glad that you watched this in the post-Covid world. I watched this in 2003/4 when it first hit VHS, and have since seen it 50+ times. It's my all-time favorite zombie movie. I lived in Orlando when Covid started, in an apartment that overlooked the food court entrance to the Mall at Millenia. I remember the months before and how absolutely busy and jam packed that parking lot would be. It was bonkers how many people would go there for an over-priced lunch. Then Covid hit, and then the lockdowns, and I remember looking out of my bedroom window and seeing the entire parking lot empty at lunch for the first time. There were 2-3 people walking the parking lot, getting exercise, and all I could think of is that I'm now living in 28 Days Later or Dawn of the Dead, minus the zombies. I've blocked out some of the memories of then, but I remember being so disturbed that I almost cracked from it mentally. That's a mental image that I'll never forget. To me, it's up there (trauma-wise) with memories of 9/11 and the Challenger space shuttle explosion in the late 80s.

This didn't occur to me for the first few viewings, but I reckon the army guys didn't help at the barricade at first because they only wanted the girls. Like, if Frank hadn't gotten infected and they'd gone to leave, the army guys would have shot both Jim and Frank and taken the girls, but they probably panicked and had to act quickly and only kill Frank because he WAS infected and would have killed the girls before they could use them. As for the "Hello" sign, someone in another comment pointed out that "Hello" would give a better indication that they were there AND safe than "SOS" would have, but also "Hello" would have been a lot more visible because it used so much fabric. This movie was such a breath of fresh air (pun fully intended) when it came out, at least for me, because it was so different from all the usual zombie movies, and so different to almost any other movie I'd seen...the nature of the infection, the speed of it, the speed of the infected, the way the movie was shot and cut with all the frantic cuts thrown in during the big scenes towards the end. And of course having Brendan Gleeson, Cillian Murphy, and Chris Eccleston was a big plus to me. it's been a minute since I've seen it, but from memory the sequel is a very good movie in itself, it's just a very different monster, so to speak, from this one. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I recall it being substantially more action-oriented and not quite as tense.

I thought about this with the “hello” at the end. It makes more sense to have that than sos or help, because a pilot would not be able to know if it was new, or left over from the beginning. Hello would indicate more of people currently alive than possibly an sos from the beginning of the outbreak where those people are now dead.
