The final shot of Damian smiling to the audience was an ad-lib. Harvey Stephens, four at the time, was told to look menacingly in the camera but couldn’t stop smirking, so Richard Donner just kept it and made the audience remember as they left the cinema.

As a young Kid apparently my Nan and I walked on to an area where they were filming The Omen second unit. My Nan met Gregory Peck and Lee Remmick. I barely remembered this taking place and could only trust my late Nan's recollections. But, a few years ago I met David Warner who pretty much confirmed this happened and told me the reasons. Peck always insisted on doing his own second unit stuff. not using body doubles. He never wanted to cheat his audience. Remmick , who lived in the UK followed suit and on the odd weekend they would shoot some second unit stuff. mostly in the morning s then retire to a pub or hotel for a bit of lunch. Peck and Remmick would always find time talk to people who they met while waiting for set ups. Warner said working on the Omen was one of the most fun and happiest experiences of his acting career. Even if he did lose his head.

I will forever love David Warner for playing parts in some of my favorite things, like the various characters he played on Star Trek: He actually played three different characters in three different franchises! He played St. John Talbot in "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier", Gorkon in "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" and Gul Madred in the Star Trek The Next Generation episode "Chain of Command" (on three days notice!). As convincing as his portrayal of Gul Madred was, I just found out that because of the short notice to do the part he was not able to learn his lines so every line he says was read from cue cards (usually viewed over Patrick Stewart's shoulder). That makes it even more impressive if you ask me. And of course two other awesome roles he did: The devil (The Evil One) in "Time Bandits" and Jack the Ripper in "Time After Time". And to prove what a small world it really is, the guy that directed "Time After Time" was Nicholas Meyer, who would go on to direct "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan", still considered by many to be the best of the entire bunch.

I think the main draw of _The Omen_ is mostly due to the fact that a child can be the pure personification of evil. That's what gets under most people's skin when watching it (especially if they're parents themselves). Nobody wants to believe that their own child can be capable of murder until it becomes blatantly obvious. The movie conveys this sense of, not only religious (when referring to the Devil), but also parental dread. And I guess if you're neither religious or a parent then this movie wouldn't do it for you. Fear is subjective after all.

The Omen is considered part of the unholy trilogy of theological horror, Ashleigh, along with The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby. It's not really Halloween-themed horror, full of jump scares, eerie atmosphere, and supernatural characters. It's more psychological, preying upon the audience's fears of the Devil and the apocalypse, and the idea of impending doom that we are helpless to stop.

The book/TV Show "Good Omens" is a spoof of this story (and definitely worth watching IMO). It focuses mainly on an Angel and Demon (a fallen Angel who didn't so much fall, as saunter vaguely downwards). They have been on Earth since the beginning and have kind of "Gone Native", and so work together to try and prevent the Apocalypse, because they like the Earth and Humanity. The story was written by acclaimed authors Neil Gaimen and Terry Pratchett.

Ashleigh, the reason I watch this channel at all is because you're honest and voice your opinions when you don't like a movie - I'm totally cool with it. Having said that, I hope you didn't dislike it so much you don't watch the rest of the trilogy because there's still plenty of interesting content to come. 70s movies tend to be a slow burn and this movie is no exception. I watched The Omen as a kid and I still get the heebie-geebies when I meet people named Damien. The Exorcist is a singularly legendary piece of film making, so the comparison is a bit unfair. You might as well compare a sketch to the Mona Lisa.
@KeplersDream

Interesting backstory to this film... When the screenplay was first pitched in the mid 70s, it was titled _The Birthmark_ and it bounced around from studio to studio before eventually landing on the desk of Alan Ladd Jr, then head of 20th Century Fox. Fox's fortunes at that time were dwindling and the studio was in real danger of going under. Ladd took a chance and greenlit the film. Now, the sequences set in the hospital were filmed at a real hospital, and the expectant mothers in the maternity ward there weren't happy with all the notices going up about it. They felt that a movie with the name _The Birthmark_ would be too much of an omen. So the title was changed to _The Omen_ and became enough of a financial success that Alan Ladd Jr felt secure in greenlighting another script that had been bouncing around Hollywood - a little thing you may have heard of called _Star Wars_ ... So in a sense, the Devil (or more accurately, superstition) changed the face of cinema as we know it.

This type of elevator is called a Paternoster (latin for "Our Father"). It consists of a chain of small cabins (for one or two persons only, typically). Goes up one side, down the parallel shaft, with big wheels at the top and bottom transporting the cabins over. One could stay in the cabins for this. They were popular in Germany and Austria, but have been phased out since the early 1970s. One of the last installed ones (at a German University) only allowed students and employees riding them, and for a while required special training (with a "Paternoster driving license").

It's not a horror movie, it's more of a supernatural thriller. And I love how Richard Donner filmed it. No covens, no goat heads, witchcraft... basically, all the things happening could either be the works of the devil, or he's just having a really bad day and it's all just a horrible coincidence. That really makes it such a good film. The sequels drop this and yes, he's the son of the devil. But we already know that, so you can't keep playing that card anymore unfortunately.

Hello Ashleigh! You will find that there are very different feels and directing styles to eras of film. It's a massive oversimplification, but in the 40s you have snappy dialogue and variety routines derived from stage entertainment like vaudeville and burlesque. in the 50s, there is a lot of gritty darkness and snappy dialogue. In the 60s it's either shocking sexiness or silliness. In the 70s, things are more realistic, with long takes and quiet character studies. In the 80s, things are more frenetic and colorful. In the 90s, you get into more 'extreme' goofiness and cartoony drama. You get the idea. So the kind of scary movies you get radically change from the 70s to the 80s. That said, the Omen scared me not from what was on screen, but from the implications of the antichrist being around and the Devil being able to kill you in ways that seem accidental ...on an (un?)related note, check out the Final Destination franchise when you get a chance.

The score is ICONIC!!! I love these sort of slow burn horrors. The focus was on the acting and script and production. Horror was not considered "high art" in terms of film-making until 1968's Rosemary's Baby and this film. These films gave horror credibility as a genre to mainstream audiences and critics. Because they were directed and played as dramas, and for real, with real stakes, and bona fide credible actors. And that is why they are seminal in the horror ouvre. Personally I've never found the Exorcist scary - the effects I find funny. But this film used to chill me. The gaslighting of the wife, the creepy nanny, the score, the child actor, the zoo scene, the sense of dread, and the HUGE moral dilemma of having to murder a child!!! SHOCKING in any time. Part 2 is also great and expands the world of the film, as does part 3. Side note: Final Destination 3 borrows a lot from these deaths and the photos. And The Shining borrows the kid on the tricycle.

My godfather, who actually was an exorcist for the church, once told me that the sound of strange dogs or sightings of strange dogs near certain events are portents of demonic activity. He said that he attended a ritual once where they could hear dogs fighting on the roof of the house. Except there was no way for any dog to get up there, so he and the others knew they were up against something that REALLY didn't want them there.

@@lucianaromulus1408 Hellhounds are part of the cultural beliefs of many cultures around the world throughout time. That's probably why you more associate dogs with evil. As far as cats.... Kattenstoet is a Belgium festival about cats. It was believed that on Witches annual gathering in Sweden, all Witches east of Belgium would pass through the town of Ypres (Ieper) on their way. It was a cultural belief throughout Europe that Witches could turn into cats. Therefore the cat festival in this town would throw live cats off roofs "trying to kill Witches who passed through". In recent years, they are now throwing plush dolls of cats instead of actually killing cats. The festival/parade has many things related to witchcraft and sorcery. Some people just fall in love with the word "Witch" and want to associate their selves to it by claiming to be one. Many new-age religious minded people stole elements from many other cultures, thinking they are Witches as the invent a new religion/sect/"path" on the spot. The allure of Witchcraft has created very bizarre new "pagan-ish" varieties that are wildly divergent from the actual history of Witchcraft, sharing literally nothing with actual beliefs/practices of the actual people throughout history who were called Witches. Are you a Witch?

Hi Ashleigh The dog skeleton in the casket was from the real mother of Damien . The real mother of Damien was an actual Jackel which is a wild dog . The priest tried to explain that to Damien's dad . Damien was not really their child ....that was a cover up to bring Damien into high social standing and that couple just happened to be having a baby the same night Damien was born from a wild dog... the one in the casket. The Omen is a trilogy that covers into Damien's adult hood . Since this one was very slow for you the other two run about the same speed. I think it has to do with building up to the plot .In that time some movies did run slow hoping to build suspense for the viewer and did not get to the point right away . I look forward to more of your reactions here . Happy Hallobeans! 🎃

I've noticed a lot of reactors think older horror movies are slow. Older movies (horror or otherwise) take time to build the character arches, so when something happens to them, you have an attachment. That's exactly why From Dusk til Dawn (as i know you've seen) starts off w/ nothing remotely close to vampires. Then when it kicks off, you have a connection to everyone cause you know their personalities,....whether you like them or not. Also, older movies don't do the jump scares & jump scare sounds just because it's 3:00. It really gets played out after a while.

Called a "creeping horror" .... sometimes it's a good build, and sometimes it's kinda slow. Especially if you're used to the faster horror and jump scares. All I know is this movie traumatized the hell outta me as a kid ROFL. I prefer creeping horror to jump scares, the build makes it a more impactful scare. Also longer lasting. I'm 50 years old and still absolutely TERRIFIED of creepy kids in horror movies _because_ of this one. 😂 It takes all opinions to form an interesting world 😊. Love this channel

@@NixyRose72 Yes! I much more prefer Creeping Horror over simple slasher types. I think the original Nightmare on Elm Street did a good job at keeping creeping horror and then adding in some jump scares. More recently, but less creeping horror are all the Conjuring franchise. I love the Conjuring films (most of them).... the Annabelle spin-offs were kinda sucky. I can say however.... Rosemary's Baby was just way too slow for me and nothing really happened in it. Of course when it came out, people were more invested emotionally into the subject matter, so it was scary to some. It just bored me.

Older movies are literally old fashioned and had old limitations that often lent to lots of dialogue scenes and modern movie pacing in general is snappier across the board both from a direction point of view and the editing. I think it’s fair to say that to a modern viewer old movies are usually “slow” feeling and it’s not always a feature.

It was really a big deal for an actors as distinguished as Gregory Peck and Lee Remick starred in a "horror film" (although according to Wikipedia, Peck saw it as more of a psychological thriller). I was 9 when this movie came out and I had read an "End Times" book called "The Late, Great Planet Earth" by Hal Lindsey which was the talk of the congregation at my Southern Baptist church, so "The Omen" really creeped me out big time!

I believe this was Ashleigh's introduction to Mr. Gregory Peck. Wish that it could have been one of more his prestigious films like Alfred Hitchcock's "Spellbound" or "The Yearling" or "Twelve O'Clock High", or "Roman Holiday" (with Audrey Hepburn), "The Big Country", "On the Beach" and of course, "To Kill a Mockingbird". But seeing that it was Halloween time, it was "The Omen" that got the intro.

As a kid, The Omen played more regularly on the TV in the UK than The Exorcist did, and I think that's why it left a lasting impression on me. I was much younger when I saw it, and the image of the young Damian smiling at the camera at the end freaked me out. Meanwhile, I was in my 30's when I finally saw the Exorcist and I felt it relied more on a shock element that left me a bit indifferent to it. You're right about The Conjuring, though, and I think The Conjuring II is my favourite horror movie of recent years.

Gregory Peck had just lost his son to suicide before this movie came out, so they were hesitant about asking him to star in it, since it involved his character trying to kill his son. But he accepted the role immediately. They had some problems with the devil dog while filming the movie. Not with it being too vicious, but with it not being vicious enough. It kept wanting to lick the actors and play with them instead of attacking them. Harvey Stevens, who played Damien, has a cameo in the remake which came out on June 6, 2006. He plays one of the reporters who question the Thornes after the nanny kills herself.

Don't feel bad, Ashleigh. I re-watched The Omen a few days ago myself (I saw it over a decade ago and bought the Blu-Ray) and I felt pretty much the exact same way you did. I remember it being a lot better, but I think I was only remembering all the death scenes because they were so memorable and shocking. The performances are fine, and the music is excellent, but for a movie about a child being the anti-Christ, they really don't do much with the concept. Plus I think they made it way too obvious that Mrs. Baylock was an associate of Satan. In her very first scene, you know something's up. They should have made it more subtle. But if you want some interesting cast trivia, I've got one you might enjoy - the photographer is played by David Warner. Twenty years after The Omen, he played Lovejoy (Cal's bodyguard) in Titanic.

I saw the original as a child and the remake as a teenager. I remember catching the remake opening day after school with a friend of mine, the only people in the theater were me, my friend, and about 5 other people, one of which left crying in the beginning when the movie shows the various historical events that were supposed to be signs of the antichrist coming. A few months later I met a man while shadowing at the physical therapy unit of a local hospital for a medical class my high school offered who had gotten into a car wreck the day of the release on his way to see the same showing I had attended, he had been left with almost no use of both arms immediately following the crash and was undergoing treatment, I vividly remember that "Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd was playing on the radio when we introduced ourselves for the first time. I found out the following year when my shadowing rotation brought me back to the physicals therapy unit that he was nearly complete with his treatments and had recovered the majority of the use of his arms by that point.

Movies were different in the 70s. They were slow builds. We had attention spans longer than a gnat's fart back then. This film, along with The Exorcist, was made for an audience of religious people, as most of us were back then. The idea that the religious villains that we were all made to fear were actually real made these films much scarier than they would ever be to a non believer. As someone born in 1966 and thus early GenX, this movie was just emblematic of the pop culture attitude towards us kids in the late ‘60s and ‘70s. If we weren’t being ignored entirely in favor of the baby boomers, we were literally demonized or told that we shouldn’t expect a traditional family upbringing (I struggle to think of a Disney film of the 1970s with kids being raised by their own parents). I actually enjoyed my childhood, but looking back and comparing it to what kids in the late 1980s and ‘90s got, I do see the stark difference.

The boy who plays Damien never says a word the whole movie EXCEPT when Gregory Peck is getting ready to kill him in the church. They did this intentionally to give that moment more impact. It's a good quality to nurture. 𖤐 The jackal's bones in the mother's grave indicated that 'Damien' was born unnaturally. The jackal *was* the mother. The jackal gave birth to a human-appearing inhuman child (presumably Satan was the father). That's the omen of the impending armageddon. 𖤐 I'm not religious, but I was more so as a kid, so this did spook me back then. Now, I see it as an exercise of superstition and the belief in such that drives so much human activity, usually for ill, not good, as it claims to be for. #AshleighBurton #RichardDonner #TheOmen #TheOmen1976

The pacing is definitely a product of its time. Movies today are both longer and more frenetic.

@@liquidlen2 The more I think of it, Len, the more I'm presuming that technology has cultivated impatience. I wonder if the quality of patience will ever make a comeback as something virtuous?

@@auntvesuvi3872 Oh, absolutely. Editing has always had an tremendous role in presentation, and the easier it has gotten to make quality cuts, the more cuts there have been. You can CREATE an action scene simply through sudden, jarring cuts. An entire "slow burn" movie takes an amazing dedication to the craft.

@@liquidlen2 I appreciate most stylistic advances... but, generally, the deliberately-paced stuff engenders more emotional reactions from me.

24:12 - Billie Whitelaw (crazy nanny) performed her last film role as the crossword-solving, landlady in 'Hot Fuzz'. "Facist." Patrick Troughton (skewered vicar) was the second actor to portray time-travelling Dr Who. David Warner (decapitated photographer) portrayed peace-seeking klingon in 'Star Trek - The Undiscovered Country'. Gregory Peck (Damien Thorn's father) portrays an amnesiac who may be the only eye-witness to a murder in Alfred Hitchcock's 'Spellbound'. Co-starring Ingrid Bergman.

I love this movie, but I think it’s just cool. The Exorcist was definitely more shocking, but I think The Omen has a deeper sense of evil which is why I like it.

It was strange to see Patrick Troughton in the Father Brennan role when a lot of people first new him has the second incarnation of The Doctor. Fun fact, one of his grandsons played Dudley Dursley.

Yeah The Omen has lost its efficacy. But at the time it was incredibly shocking and helped fuel what was known as “satanic panic” which was a popular theme in horror movies back then. It’s not as scary as some of today’s paranormal movies but it will definitely stick with you over time.

I saw this on network TV in 1978 or so and this remains one of the most terrifying movies I've ever seen. That darn MUSIC.
