Awareness really does help. I never got into smoking or drinking alcohol because during my childhood and teenage years. I was always receptive to advice and all the evidence of the harmful effects of substance that would be smoked or drank. When you dont know how easily it can grow out of control? Those stats continuously skewed very young. It just doesnt sound quite right to me to think children should automatically know better and just have a self control problem. For adults, yeah. Because at that point you know. But even then, the ignorance might lay in not knowing any other coping mechanisms, which is an ignorance problem.

Honestly I completely agree with the studies and the affect on the consumer. However the issue is that banning such content is completely impossible. There will always be a way around it no matter what. VPNs are the easiest way, simply change your IP to a place that allows it. This is more a fault of the care taker. This type of content has also affected me at a very young age. If it was harder to access I likely would have been exposed to it much later.
