I agree this is a great story, but there are some things that you got wrong in the story. The server didn't reveal the IP address he was connecting from, that's not possible through Tor. Neither it was a VPN company snitching on him, again, Tor doesn't work that way. According to the so-called "official story" which makes a bit more sense, the FBI tracked the first time the site was ever mentioned on the Internet, and they found the first mention was from Ross himself promoting it in a forum. They later looked for the username he used in the forum and that's how they found the stack overflow question because it was the same username. Then they found his email address (he posted it on a forum too) and were able to track down where he lived because those sites on the clear net, actually keep logs and give all that info to government agencies. Ross's biggest mistake in my opinion was that he didn't separate enough his clear net activity from his dark net activity, so the FBI was able to "easily" link them. That's what we call "Op Sec" mistakes. It's also said that the FBI agent mentioned in this video was corrupt, and he kept the money for himself. That time he lied to Ross saying he killed the guy that Ross wanted dead, was also not coordinated by the FBI, he did it on his own to scam Ross. This was also not the only time Ross paid someone to kill a person and was scammed. It's also said there that were some other FBI agents who were bribed to not reveal information. To this day, Ross keeps denying he was the owner of the Silk Road, and his parents believe so. Ross kept some sort of diary of how he built the Silk Road from the beginning to the end

They found the ip of the server and the got acces to it to get his ip and after that they asked it to the vpn company for his real one
@sudoalex
@sudoalex Жыл бұрын
@@Sp1nkel I don't think that's correct. He was connecting through Tor not a VPN. A VPN alone won't let you access the Tor network, you need a Tor client which works with relays. The IP address the server would show would be the IP of the exit node relay, not the actual IP that he was connecting from. The IP that was leaked was the one on the server (the host) because of vulnerabilities on the CAPTCHA's source code but the Tor network remained uncompromised so they wouldn't be able to find who was accessing the site anyway, all they would see would be Tor's exit nodes IP addresses. The way they found Ross was because of low Op Sec, the IP address is not the only thing you have to care about hiding when you don't want to be found. That's just one of many layers, yet people seem to be obsessed with hiding their IP address but they leave lots of traces everywhere else that can be easily correlated with their actual identity

If he raked in what would now be $18-billion destroying people's lives with drugs (and all the people they hurt, because the only ways to support a serious drug addiction are to steal, deal, pimp, or prostitute), then YES he deserves to be in prison for life. And, of course it should be illegal to hire a hit man to to kill somebody, whether the death actually happens or not.
@SmashedEdits

Nah man, not every person who uses drugs is a freaking addict, 90% are normal working class people, if not more, no hardcore street addict is buying of the dark web. Being put in jail for selling drugs is a joke. We should all be free as adults to put what we want in our body.
@stuupyisntreal

He didn't take those actions though. It would be like someone posting cp on KZbin and KZbin being put at fault. KZbin didn't post the video, they just provided the platform. He didn't ruin anyone's life, he didn't force anyone to sell or buy anything. The decisions that people made, either to sell or buy, had nothing to do with Ross, he didn't force people to ruin there lives

He didn't force people to take drug's. These people bought drug's and ingested them themselves. It is nowhere near close to a real life drug dealer who hangs out around highschools and colleges. A precedent needs to be set for these kinds of things. Going easy on him was just not possible because for the government, a scenario like this needs to be avoided at all costs. Harsh punishment demotivates wannabes with the potential to do similar things. The crimes he committed weren't any joke either, and I think the crimes alone are enough for a sentence like that.
