In this video, I conduct a detailed comparison of the 28 Nosler and 300 Win Mag cartridges.
I think most hunters would agree that the 300 Winchester Magnum and 28 Nosler both fantastic cartridges for certain situations. However, while there is definitely some overlap in their capabilities, there are some major differences between the 28 Nosler vs 300 Win Mag cartridges you should be aware of.
Unfortunately, as is the case with many things involving somewhat high octane, new cartridges like the 28 Nosler, there’s a lot of misinformation and marketing hype out there regarding the capabilities of the new caliber. For this reason, while they’re both among the best cartridges for hunting many species of game these days, it’s really easy to get confused when trying to understand the actual strengths and weaknesses of that cartridge compared to more established centerfire rifle cartridges like the 300 Winchester Magnum.
In this episode, I discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the 28 Nosler vs 300 Win Mag in order to give you the information necessary to choose the right one for your needs.

Hello John and thank you for all of this really fantastic data and the aspects and considerations with the 28 Nosler. I do not have any chance of hunting elk or larger. My 270 takes my Texas deer or axis deer every year and both of these cartridges are just too much. But I am planning an ELR build chambered in 28 Nosler and this was immensely helpful information to me. Thank you for your time, effort, and expense in all of these terrific videos you present. I find it all extremely educational.

I have both and my go to for expensive and long wait tag hunts is the 28 nosler with 195 Berger EOL. I can push them a hair over 3000 fps with a 24” barrel and they are extremely bad medicine for big 4 legged critters out to 800+ yards. I don’t advocate for taking those long shots but for hunts that take years to accumulate enough points for a tag, I want every tool available to take that 400 bull if i get a chance.

Really enjoying your informative content. I've hunted red deer here in the UK, wild boar in Europe and plains game in Africa with my 300WM. With a suppressor the recoil is really not a problem and I've found it a fantastic cartridge. Using 180g Barnes home loads I've shot a lot of plains game up to kudu and eland. I even shot a duiker with it. The bullet caused pretty minimal damage on the cape and killed the animal instantly. I've never felt under gunned with it or worried about it's capability at range (although I rarely take shots past 250 metres). On smaller deer in the UK I use a 243 or 7x57 as the ol' 300 is probably a bit much for them! Keep up the great work!

Hunted with 30-06 in western desert / mountains all my life with no issues. Most opportunities are at min 250 to 400+ yards and some years ago I decided after reading impressive articles on 7mm Remington Magnum that I really needed one. However after experiencing the recoil shooting prone I changed my mind. It wasn't for me. In my personal experience the 160g 7mm made the 180g 30-06 feel like a 30-30 carbine. I don't feel limited at those ranges with the 30-06. I would suggest if possible try before you buy. Especially if stepping up your cartridge from what your used to.

I had a weak moment and brought home a Savage Ultralight in 28 Nosler. Blueprinted action with 24in Carbon Fiber barrel. I'm having buyers remorse, yet am very attracted to the rifle. I see it as a do lots one gun. Light enough for mountain hunting, yet still short enough for black timber. I think 30 caliber is better on large game, but the 100 rounds of Nosler 175s purchased, sure look sweet. I also own a 300 RUM, 300 Weatherby, 338 Win Mag and 375 Ruger. My goal is to pare these down. Wanting a mountain rifle and one for longer shots at elk and black bear in lower elevations, the Savage 28 Nosler fits nicely, while for things that can bite back, the 375 Ruger fits the bill. Both have some overlap and seem a good pair. On the other hand my Remington 700 in 300 Weatherby covers lots of ground. Most of my rifles are semi-customized hunting rifles and not Sniping rifles, although the 26in 300 RUM comes close. I fret over function, barrel length and stainless vs blued. I do have too much overlap, including 2 300 Win Mags and why I should let some go. I can only hunt with one at a time, so how does one choose from a safe full of fine weapons!? Recoil is a non-issue for me and I do not use brakes! But I love them all and eventually will shed some tears, as I send some to new homes!

"Recoil is a non issue and I do not use brakes!" Love this, more hunters need to apply practice and patience on proper shooting to master recoil, nothing like a flat and fast Magnum for delivery at a distance

28 Nosler rifles are expensive and 28 Nosler ammo is expensive. The 300 Weatherby can be had in the inexpensive Weatherby Vanguard rifle for less than 600 bucks the ammo can be bought for as low as 60 dollars. 165 gr goes over 3,300 fps mv. The 180 gr goes over 3200 fps mv. 28 Nosler will cost more money and is uncommon.

Actually, the Nosler AccuBond LR has a minimum velocity rating of 1300fps. With the .28 Nosler, going 3160fps (as per Nosler Load Data), it hits 1300fps at 1900 yards!! So that's it's actual max range... insane! The .300 Win Mag with the 190gr ABLR hits 1300fps at around 1600 yards. Now I don't intend on ever going past 600 yards, and currently only go to 300, so that's not my concern lol. Everyone has different philosophies and ideologies, so while one guy will say it's ethical to go 800 plus, it's not me, that's for sure.
@Jeff_Seely

John, as with all your publications, your book is top notch in the information department 😁. This is what bothers me about the 28 Nosler. For whatever reason Nosler decided to use a short .181 freebore in the modern era of long and sleek scenar type projectiles. And then they are required to seat the ABLR projectile so far into to the case that you get robbed of the powder volume. Seems odd but I would have to ask a ballistician why. Also, why do a 3° taper? When I ordered my barrel, I went with a .267 freebore so I can load the Berger 195gr EOL for the heel to be loaded at the shoulder/neck junction to be at jam and I went to a 1°30" taper. It will also accommodate the heavy ABLR hunting round a lot better. This barrel shoots a very tight group with 175 ABLR and tighter still with the EOL. You already know that I am against long range hunting but I do like a set up that can shoot tight groups at a thousand yards.
@Jeff_Seely
@Jeff_Seely Жыл бұрын
I agree with you Marc. At 800yards everything is alive. Wind, density, barometric pressure, etc... They all have a sharp effect on bullet trajectory and I'm not going to shoot at majestic species unless I can control the kill! 300-400 is my max. And that's pushing it under the best conditions with the best rifle. See my comments attached. The only thing I hunt at a thousand yards is steel...

@@Jeff_Seely Every shot counts! I had to learn the hard way, but now I know my limit. Luckily getting closer is challenging, which makes it fun! I keep a little booklet to keep track of my shooting and hunting and according to that, my average shot distance is under 100m... longest shot was 220m. On warthogs my average distance is 51m! Like I said... getting close is more fun!

As a Europian hunter i would like milder option for 28 Nosler in same bullet size. And it is 7 x 57 Mauser in 175grain nosler bullet but milder recoil .There are plenty of factory loads in different brands.Many made in Usa. And it is much better than 308 Win for deer size game. And barrels last longer than 28 Nosler. You loose little in trajector but it is so little i think and you can bild nicer rifle with that.

Good question. Yes, there is such a round: the 280 Remington. Remington made all sorts of mistakes with their marketing and the logistics of their release when they introduced the cartridge, but it's an all around solid performer. Nosler breathed new life into the cartridge when they standardized the 280 Ackley Improved several years ago. Learn more about both of them here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aInOgpeem51mfJo

Would be nice to have a heavier 7mm Scirocco offering for the 28Nos, but alas, the only offering is a 150gr. Federal stopped offering the 155 TA load for the 28Nos. They were supposed to be bringing out a 175gr TA in 7mm. That would be bad bad elk medicine.
@Thebiggamehuntingblog

They still make the 155gr TA load as far as I know, but that ammo is just really hard to find. I know they were talking about making a "heavy" 7mm TA load for the 7mm PRC. Perhaps they'll offer it for the 28 Nosler as well...

@Thebiggamehuntingblog last I looked for the 28 Nosler it said discontinued for the 155 load. Checked several sources and all said the same thing. A 175 would make more sense out of the 28 anyways I think.

@Thebiggamehuntingblog easiest is to just look at suppliers. Midway lists it as discontinued on their site. I know people have called and asked Federal about the load and were told it was discontinued. It hasn't been available in over two years. Last I checked there was only one listing for it even on GunBroker.

I contacted the Federal rifle ammunition product manager today and he confirmed they have NOT discontinued that 155gr Terminal Ascent load for the 28 Nosler. He did say they temporarily paused production of that particular load due to component shortages and to enable them to focus more on the other offerings in that lineup with the elevated demand for ammo lately. However, he said they will be restarting production of both the 155gr TA load and a new "heavy" 170gr TA load for the 28 Nosler.

About the same as what? Case capacity isn't close to a 28Nos, neither is fps, ft lbs of energy, etc. A fast twist barreled 7 mag is definitely comparable to a 7 PRC, because of the higher case capacity. 7 mag is just limited by SAAMI specs.
