We didn't have a drier when we moved into this house in 71. We put clothes on hangers and hung them on the shower curtain rod. Also figured out how to hang a wash line between the bedrooms in the hallway.

Chilly up north, but evening fireside chats (snacks & beverages from homestead) with friends. Add popcorn & a movie shown on the garage door, priceless. 😊

Hi Sarah, according to Google: During summer months, your ceiling fan blades should be set to spin counterclockwise. When your ceiling fan spins quickly in this direction, it pushes air down and creates a cool breeze. I had to chuckle when you mentioned watching Shakespeare in the park, while your husband was people watching. Great hacks Sara, thank you.

I have bird feeders in my yard, and the neighbors weren't very pleased when their kids had a trampoline. Bird droppings on bed linens don't sound very comfortable.

I can vouch for "blackout curtains"! Pennsylvania's week-long heat wave started yesterday with 94°. Although I have central A/C, a severe storm (microburst?) knocked out electricity after 5:00 p.m. Despite not having electricity (air conditioning) for about 18 hours, the house stayed relatively "cool"!

I was cooking something in my crockpot on the patio today and giggled when you mentioned it! I live in Arizona. Today's high where I live was 112 and it's currently 96 at 9:10pm. June is the hottest month where I live. I will definitely use some of these ideas for outdoor activities when it cools off in late October. Until then, I will continue to cook on the patio!

The ceiling fan reverse is so in the summer months you push the cold air to the center of the room since cold air "falls" to the floor. Hot air rises so then you want the blades to push the hot air up towards the ceiling causing it to move and then circulate through the room. My dad was an HVAC engineer. Hope that made sense!

Fans, vents and curtains. I grew up where it was hot and dry in the summer with no A/C. Run those fans. If it's way too hot and you are just pushing hot air around put a bowl of ice in front of it. Vents. Use those vents. I'm taking about the ones under the house Open them in the hot months, also when taking a shower turn on that vent. Curtains, if you can use black out curtains they really do help lower the temperature. 2:50 Screens. If you can open those windows at night if the temperature is lower at night. Oh and run appliances like washer and dw at night. :) Hope this helps someone :)

I make my own coldbrew coffee and i think it tastes better than getting it at other places and paying $7. Local grocers had bags of coffee marked down so I bought enough for all summer plus some pumpkin spice coffee for fall. All of them had great expiry dates, next year. double win.

Our city hall has a gallery to showcase local artists (changes out monthly) Free of course. I LOVE the idea of a photographing contest! (I'm thinking of taking my older granddaughters and having them do this - you could make a memory scrapbook that way.) In the hotter months you may want to do your outdoor hikes, etc. early in the day. One summer I had my granddaughters & we went to a citypark that had a paved area with built in sprinklers and fountains and automatic buckets that filled up and dumped - they shyed away from getting dumped on UNTIL I offered a dollar for each time they would get dumped on - and of course I took photos - some of the best. My husband enjoys "birding" at local parks with my grandson who loves birds - grab some binoculars and head out.

You do not even need two fans if you have two windows. If you have one facing out it pulls the air from outside in creating circulation.

Like you, we go to free nature preserves in the area. We go out to lunch as a special treat once in a while, and the kids look forward to it because it's out of the ordinary. I plan to get my family involved in some house projects this summer, like painting the bathroom. Not expensive, but something we can do together and appreciate the outcome!

Living in the humid south, most of these outdoor activities aren't pleasurable. Heat index this weekend -105°F. Too hot during the day for anything that doesn't include water and mosquitoes will eat you up during evening outdoor activities. Thank goodness for our free splash pad for the kids!

I would say going out and volunteering is a great way to have some free fun. You can help at plays, different events, farmer markets, library sales, etc. It a good experience. Get to talk with different people and usually they feed you or give you a t-shirt, etc.

Super list! I'm glad you mentioned gardening. It can bring so much joy and plants can add to curb appeal too. 💚 I am slowly working on a shade garden and have been fortunate enough to receive split up hostas (for free) from family/friends. (I watch for hosta sales too ...😉) I recently transplanted wild strawberries and wild violets (which are native species here) from family members' lawns where they were unwanted, to fill in as non-invasive ground cover at our home. It will take some time but it is coming along and the process is part of the fun. Happy Summer to you and yours! 🌞

Great ideas. For kids: write out a list of things they will find in nature and assign a point value for how rare they are. Hand your kids a bag and take them on a scavenger hunt to find one of each. If someone finds them all they pick a treat to have when you get home or something like that.

No, you do NOT need special coffee to make cold brew. I make cold brew as a matter of course. I use 2-quart (I think?) Ball jars, coffee that's on sale, a grinder to get a medium grind, water, cheap paper filters, and rubber bands to hold the coffee in the filters. I let it steep overnight, with a smaller jar used as a weight to hold down the coffee packets. Yes, I've thought about buying a cold brew machine. I like my method. I started using it because I wasn't sure if I would continue to make it. But I make a batch every few days. And I'm kind of stubborn about the whole frugal thing. I've used every coffee from name brands to Aldi. As far as kids go- I'm going to disagree. Kids do not need a programmed summer; in fact, they need to experience a little boredom and the chance to figure out how to use their free time.

I used to run a coffee shop & we brewed coffee & put in container to cool & then put into fridge. We added flavors, milks/creams to make specialty cold coffee's. As far as kids---have few scheduled activities (zoo, pool days, activities) but give kids free time to play(be kids). I do encourage reading fun books/magazines to keep reading/literacy from regressing.
