Hell, Scarlet was one of the lucky ones. Doyle too, he was maybe even luckier. Scarlet took a hell of a beating, yes, but he didn't have to become infected and act against her will for days, in agonizing pain.

I think the movie wanted the viewers to feel that the Harris children are now stranded inside the metro station, all alone in the dark, with no one to protect them from the infected. Don took out their last remaining guardian they had left in a pretty nasty way.

That’s a typical Hollywood storyline. This is a bit more reality based, in the sense that, no matter who or what you’ve done, you can still die in any given situation.
