as a new crocheter, it’s hard to not fall into overconsumption especially with yarn. i’ve learned a good habit is keeping track of which projects i’ll ACTUALLY make, complete and use/ be proud of in some way. for example, i never use cotton, but i bought a 250g skein of a cotton/polyester blend to make a reusable shopping bag and i live how it’s coming out! for $10 i got a reusable bag and saved money by not having to buy more bags when shopping and buying a reusable bag. i recently started a blanket of all my leftover yarn that’s too big to use for stuffing amigurumi! i hope these habits carry on into the future, because honestly if anyone is struggling with overconsumption, the best thing that worked for me to help was to make things i’ll actually use/need that way you don’t have to buy from a company and you can feel proud that you’ve made something that you can use for a long time! like clothes, socks, shopping bags, etc!

Thanks for sharing all your helpful ideas from your yarn stash & projects Elise. What I’ve started to do is every time I purchase yarn that’s a ‘must have’ with a project in mind, I purchased some clear plastic bags that are zippered, placed the yarn in it with a ‘To Do’ note which includes the name of the crochet project along with the KZbin video tutorial for reference & crochet hook size. This helps me keep track of upcoming crochet projects. I also try to include a photo of it in the plastic bag & I do a sample such as a granny square if that’s the project that I want to work on next & so on.

Here is an idea to use up small amounts of different colored yarn. My granddaughter is graduating from high school on Friday and just got her drivers license as well. She requested that I make her a granny square steering wheel cover and seat belt cover in springy, pastel colors. So I made her one and tied it all together with a white border and it is adorable! You can use any square that you like. Grannies, sunburst grannies etc. I used a flower type granny square and I am quite happy with the results. I used the magic knot method to change colors so I didn't have a massive amount of ends to sew in. I imagine these would sell pretty well if you do craft shows.

Great destash ideas! Knit Picks Palette yarn is great for amigurumi, especially when you have limited space for display. The toys work up great in this yarn but are a nice smaller size. It just takes some getting used to working on a smaller scale. Those mice are so adorable, I have to look up the pattern. Also, it makes perfect sense to buy one ball of yarn so you can destash three others. Go for it!

Dear lady, love your enthusiasm in this video. It's ok. God doesn't punish us for our love of yarn. At least, I hope, he doesn't. I don't consider it over-buying, I consider it a collection. Some people collect stamps or figurines, I collect yarn. I'm thinking of making blankets and shawls and selling or giving them away, also. I made a blanket for friend that moved away and she was thrilled with it. It was just a variety of similar yarns from my stash (a lot of Lion brand wool-ease). I've always found that one of the great pleasures of life is just making something for a friend and seeing their smile when I present it to them. I am also working on making myself sweaters, even with mixed brands of yarn. I taught my husband to knit and crochet and we used to give hats and scarfs away to our waitresses at our favorite restaurant. Lots of fun. Bought myself some yarn from Expression Fiber arts, It's glorious but the most expensive yarn I've ever crocheted, it's going to be truly a great sweater. I live in rural area and often work outside so most of my clothes are rather practical and country-fied, even my sweaters get a lot of wear and are simple in design. Granny squares remind me of my mother... 40-50 yrs ago she was making wonderful blankets and clothes... loved her work.

Hi Elise. Thanks again for introducing new creators, I like when you do this. I look forward to seeing your progress on these projects in the future. I haven't looked on ravelry in years. I didn't know you have a website! I'm going to check it out. I need to make a list. When I finish a project, I feel lost. "What do I do now?" Wandering around in the desert with my crochet hook lol.

I’m in the same boat named “yarn abundance.” I remember the days when I might have a spare skein or two, but to date I have so much yarn that I have filled over 12 totes, and that’s after purging and gifting a decent quantity. Fortunately they are separated by fiber content, which helps, but I have this need to knit and crochet my way through them. I’ll be checking out the patterns you’ve recommended in hopes of reducing the hoard.

You always make me so happy! Your energy is amazing! I have a very large craft room and decided to use up all my stash before I begin a new project…..it has been quite a challenge! I am retired and I love making blankets and I wonder if you might have any ideas…like what to do with all the blankets I have made? ❤❤❤

When I first started crocheting, I could only do granny squares so I brought a mix of different yarn makes some were so cheap and itchy. I stopped doing that and stick to a brand I know and like. I mainly make blankets but just started doing amigurumi. I realised the other day that I haven’t brought any yarn since last August, I’ve just recently finished my latest blanket. So started to look at what to start next, I tend to only buy yarn for a project, but I do have a bit of a stash. I always go through that before buying any yarn to see what colours for a project I already have. Then make a list of the rest I need, any left overs go in box to be made into amigurumi.

The only reason I am doing low buys every year or trying... Is I hit a zone and a time of life where I can't see what I have easily... I am a crafter that is prompted to make by the supplies, not the pattern. So a large stash will be a constant. I have just hit a zone that is too large for me to easily manage. I love seeing all of the stash busting videos and how we are all working in different ways to hit the same goals.

You had mentioned a lighter weight yarn that seemed too small for amigurumi. I have had success in using two yarns at once (keeping to simpler patterns) that created a beautiful color mix in my project. Also scrap yarn crochet baskets work well with the smaller yarns (3 yarns at a time, as one yarn runs out you change just that one for an ever evolving color mix).
