Hey Guys, injuries usually happen when they’re least expected. But as my mother used to say at 97, “It is what it is”. How can you not be proud of Erin, her courage, fortitude and caring was inspiring!!! Recovery is something that is hard. I spent the majority of 2022 bedridden, first, had my varicose veins removed, then a hip replacement, then pneumonia. I thought I’d need a knee replacement but the hip surgery took a lot of strain off my knee. The hardest thing was not being able to hike or canoe, but I got through it, and so will you!

I’m a 62 year old woman and have camped in very remote areas in the USA and Canada. Thirty years ago I got certified as a Wilderness First Responder and have been ever since. It has brought me much peace of mind to be able to assess, treat and rule out various medical issues and conditions for both myself and others when far away from civilisation. Congrats on getting yourselves out of a potentially very bad situation and good luck to both of you!

We have great sympathy for your injury. Walking a neighborhood trail just after my retirement, I fell and parted the main tendon at the knee. Trying to get out did the same thing to the other knee. So then I had to crawl out the rest of the way through the blackberries to the road and a rescue. Six months in rigid braces. More than a year before I could hike again. My wife tore her miniscus just like you on a steep set of stairs accessing an old railroad trail. Getting her up the stairs and into the car alone was very hard. Again a slow recovery. We both caution you against reinjury. Easier said than done. So sorry for this monkey wrench thrown into your life. Here is an idea for a theme of a project you could work on in recovery. Access to nature for temporarily and permenently disabled people. You have the most magnificant partner ever! Wishing you good steady recovery.

Shit happens. Don't beat yourself up. You two are an awesome team. Shit happened, you both made sensible decisions as a team, made a solid plan and handled a bad situation as best as possible, that's all you can do. Don't let "what if " influence your adventures. I'd rather be injured in the woods than at home too scared to be out there. You both kick ass, keep doing what you do!

Thank you for documenting this. It is a great lesson for people in the outdoors. That even if you do everything right and r prepared (which u always are) that things can go wrong and out of your control. Most people prob would have just turned the camera off and told the story after. U and Erin r the real deal!! 👊
@talesoftheblueeyedindian2412
@talesoftheblueeyedindian2412 Жыл бұрын
Always prepared? Not really he's forgot his dry foods several times and that's not the only thing that's left him unprepared. He is almost never prepared. What he is though, is a man of compromise and finding a way because of it. That's the farthest from prepared. It takes extra skills to make up for what you lack. And that he has. So half of your comment is entirely wrong. Try again. Dont tout this man for being prepared when even he knows he almost never is.

John, many of us have known about your bum knee, so while this is terrible and I can only imagine the pain… The take away for me after watching you (almost from the gitgo) is that you are no light weight. Good to witness this happen so no one takes being out there lightly and is something to pay attention to. Erin, you, my dear…you are my hero. Your partnership has been so sweet and solid. Your lady’s a beast and in a good way. As for the zoleo, you have it for a reason, use it. Air ambulance is there, OPP helicopter is there, SAR is there, and then there is the local search and rescue. And just because the leg feels good when you think it is, wait another month and then try it when your doctor says you can. Happy healing.

Thank you guys for what you do and I'm wishing you a speedy recovery! Watching this and knowing the outcome had me so on edge waiting for it to happen, so relieved to hear you made it home safe. I think you two handled the situation like champs and personally don't think you could have done it any better. I can only imagine that it would take an extreme amount of mental strength to have the laser focus that Erin did and think rationally in an emergency situation. Spending the night at camp to assess the situation and starting fresh the next day seemed like the right thing to do. Injuries suck but recovery time is important, wishing Jon a swift recovery.

First off. Love you both and I'm so glad you're okay. You have found a rare and beautiful person in Erin and strong! Holy smokes. I have a left knee that did the exact same thing as yours, only 30 years ago. Torn meniscus and anterior cruciate. I was good to go in five or six weeks. Arthroscopy! Happened again a few years back tore meniscus in the same knee Annoying and painful but recoverable! I would never dream of downhill skiing or water skiing. But I'll bet with a neoprene sleeve or wrap of some sort you're going to be fine for winter camping! I think/hope you'll be out there for spring paddling. Please keep your spirits up John! Many of us out here rooting for you and need your comforting soothing vids to come back as soon as possible. They are such a solace in these difficult times. Thank you both for being good and kind people.

Had something similar happen to me. I had knee issues for a several months then one day it just locked up and trying to straight it felt like someone was stabbing it. Two doctors said it was tendinitis, i thought there's no way that would lock your leg up. Finally a football doctor saw me and immediately said you have a bone tumor. Sure enough after some test, they found that a bone tumor grew up through the tendon and locked the leg. Surgery was not the best, but healed and I'm still good today. Hope this helps and thank God for good women.

Stong narrative visual storytelling = just a beautiful short film. I love that you guys are readers AND writers! Never underestimate the strength of a determined woman :) Nice job, Erin! Always carry emergency gear and a PLD. I broke my wrist last year on a hike 3 miles out - had to wade a cross an ice melt river twice on the way back, then in June, I blew out my knee. Definitely sobering. Wishing you healthy vibes! Hope you're feeling better soon, Jon.

Erin is a real trooper. Jon, Erin is the best partner you can have. Strong, resilient, resourceful, and very easy on the eyes. Great trip and definitely a worthwhile memory. Hope the knee will mend. Two words, knee braces Jon.

An honest evaluation of your evacuation and recovery is commendable. This video provides an understanding of your thought process and how you both worked thru the problem. The calmness and rational thought was the basis for your success. Luck was bolstered by your preparedness.....and having Erin with you...😉

Hey Jon. I had a similar issue with my knee once. The cartilage in your knee is two interlocking "C" shapes that cushion the knobs of the upper and lower leg bones (not a doctor 😜). The cartilage can tear, and then the "C" opens up and can prevent full extension of your leg. If it doesn't go back in immediately, swelling sets in and it takes a few days before it will be able to re-align. A very tough injury to experience out in the woods!!

Geez Jon. That was rough. I subscribed to your channel not just because of your experience, adventures, and awesome content but because you seem like a cool guy, the sort of guy anyone would enjoy hanging out with. So it was pretty brutal to see you go through this and worry for you future adventures. THANK GOD you had Erin on this trip! What a life saver.I mean, even with your satellite rescue, you might have been stuck far from the tent waiting with no heat, or trying to crawl back to camp at least. Any rate, she saved the day! Going to go watch the update, hoping it's good!! God speed to your recovery Jon

So painful to watch. I had to fast forward to the rescue at the end, kind of like reading the last page of a book. Prayers for a quick recovery. You both showed bravery and strength. It’s hard needing the help of others for things you are used to doing yourself. Wow Erin was strong in the mental and physical challenges she faced. Great job to both of you and the partnership you have.

Gosh John!! What a luck that you wasn't on a lonely trip!! Erin is your guardian angel and she definitely must have been a grizzly bear in her former life!! So much power, absolutely amazing!! My back already hurts while just watching her pulling you through the snow on the first route to the tent but pulling you over the 5 km back to the car?!!! 😳😳😳Erin, you are incredible!! Best wishes to you sweeties and get well soon, John 😘😘🤗🍀🍀🍀
