Here's when it was -40: 32:58 And an example of the ice flooding after drilling a hole: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJ7afIaDaMasns0 Get a lot of questions and some are quick to accuse me of lying about the temperature (no, I never have). Temps are regularly in the -30s here and I camp year-round...it's not a green screen, it's a wood stove. If the title says -30, that's the LOW for the trip...the temp fluctuates, of course. I made a video for the top 11 FAQs I get about winter camping: 1) If it's so cold, why can't you see your breath? kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 2) If it's so cold, why is there slush on the lake? kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 3) Why aren't you melting snow for water? kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 4) What is the temp inside the tent? kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 5) Why winter camp at all? kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 6) Why aren't you wearing snowshoes? kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 7) How do you poop when it's that cold? kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 8) Aren't you worried about carbon monoxide from the stove? kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 9) Aren't you afraid of animals attacking you? Where's your gun? kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq88 10) How you you power your devices? kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 11) Why don't you use a floor? kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 Hope it helps clear some things up.

Your cinematic abilities, the way you talk, do things is so soothing and calming and stoic at the same time, it's contagious, as someone said " Calm is contagious " . Good trip. Those holes in the snow you found on your walk around the lake are overnight ruffed grouse roosts/beds. They bury themselves in soft snow for its insulating properties. They usually defecate before leaving their beds. That's what you found. The impressions in the snow near the holes are made by their wings at take off.

Dude! I just wanted to thank you for the opportunity to watch your amazing adventures in the North. I was heavily affected by your work as soon as I discovered your channel around 4 years ago. I was in a very difficult place in my life at the time. I think the most difficult in my life. Watching you exploring the wilderness in the way you do is inspiring. You approach it with such humility, and respect while showing good humour and positivity in the face of the nastiest bugs, weather, and portages the North has to offer. It gave me hope in a hopeless time in my life. It got me out there; into the wilderness again! Following in your footsteps sometimes. Sometimes finding my own way. Thank you Jon. Thank you so much. Now I am starting to post my own videos. Learning along the way. Loving it!! I still watch everything you post. I love watching you and Erin too. You're a great pair!! Thanks again! Cheers!

Hey Jon, another great video my friend, it's nice that you had some fish action in the tent. Those holes you saw in the snow are most likely from Grouse that come off their roost and burrow under the snow in real cold weather. The temps you had would do it for sure. I have seen this many times over the years. I even had them bust out of the snow when I walked past them, that will get the heart started . lol Another great video, take care and stay safe Brother. The still image at 6:42 is so beautiful, homey and calm. Speaking of what smells more appetising than cooking onions, id say garlic frying is a close second. Your video is a combination of some of the most pleasing things, like staying warm and cosy indoors while watching out a window where outside is raining or snowing, the cracking of wood in a campfire, the sound of hot water pouring into cocoa powder… it feels so reassuring. It’s very kind and considerate of u to handle the fish captured so gently l, and ensure it stayed in the water instead of lifting it up. ❤

Many Europeans lived through same conditions as well. It's not close to death, not closer than usual really. We forgot how close to it we are all the time. I watched a young man start reeling in a walleye when a huge pike grabbed it, the kid hauled in what he thought was 2 fish but that pike had another freshly swallowed walleye inside it when they cleaned it. He could barely contain himself... Who am I kidding, he didn't contain anything, he was doing the victory dance all night much to the chagrin of both his dad and my husband. Was a good outing.

Next time drill a couple holes halfway through the ice near the stove. Use those to collect water making it easier to collect and remove. Also gives somewhere for other water pooling to go. You can do this in all 4 corners. It's much easier to bail water from a hole than flat ice.

Also, what does the temperature stay at inside the tent in those temps?
@LostLakes
@LostLakes Жыл бұрын
Thanks Bryce! The inside temp ranges widely depending on how I use the dampers (on the door and flue) but it's doable to get it to 40C when it's -30C outside. But if it's -30 overnight and I'm trying to maximize the burn duration, I'll close the dampers most of the way to slow the burn. It's also much colder on the ground than in the top half of the tent, so it could easily be below freezing still in that scenario which is why I still need a good sleep system (I only run the stove all night at -20C or colder). Generally if I'm awake the indoor temp is probably 10-12C and if sleeping a bit below freezing

Thanks Jon, great video! You hit two of my favorite things of winter… the sound of snow when it’s -30 or more, and the fantastic stars included the Milky Way! The drone footage was excellent also!

The very first shot of the tent at night at the 6:40 mark was so beautiful. The night skies, the silence and beauty of the snow, all worthy of contented smiles. Such sights are so welcomed to all of us who will never get there and you taking us along is a blessing. Thanks Jon for your dedication to sharing your adventures❤❤

Thanks for answering all those questions. Always wonder about powering my lights and radio. My first winter camp was a learning experience. I now sleep with my hearing aids, phone and solar radio. Since I am entering the 4th quarter of my life I believe I am going for a longer winter camp either the end of this year or the beginning of next. You and others have really educated me. So nice to be one with nature. Thanks again.

As an Australian who has only once been subjected to -30c in Ottawa, more power to you. -40c is nuts. At the same time, the idea of being in a hot tent with that wind blowing and snow hammering down outside is enticing.

I camped in the boundary water in -40 x-country ski 7 miles to the lake. Didn't use a tent or a heater. When I woke up the next day the thermometer needle was buried at -45f. I just dug a little cave in a snow drift. I tried fishing but the hole would freeze over instantly. I'm not sure I'd want to do it again.

Is it possible for the stove to melt through the ice? Maybe if you were there for an extended amount of time? I really enjoy most of your content, you're very calculated and prepared while also appreciating the beauty of your surroundings.

I don't think so...the water it melts acts as a buffer for the heat and then it can't melt the ice. But I had some splits under and through the legs to help it float and stay level. Thanks Aaron :)

I love the sound very cold snow makes when walked on. We had a couple of nights at -25C in an otherwise mild winter and I could barely stand going out to the porch to get an armload of firewood. Oh to be young, strong and energetic again!

Finally. When your using a pulk someone brings a chainsaw and it’s John one of the best KZbinrs out there. There is no need to always cut wood the old way. Way to go John. I’ve been using an electric chain saw on all my trips with an extra battery and chain. They are quiet and save so much of my energy. Now I don’t feel guilty John. I’m 72 and I need all the help I get

Lol it is really nice. But the outdoors is my gym so I like the workout of the saw too :) But yeah the lack of fumes and deafening noise with the battery-powered is sweet
