283: PACIFIC CROSSING: THIRD WEEK and Fuel/Engine Issues

In our third week of our Pacific Crossing, our engines don’t start and we discover that we have bad fuel. We also have a sooty tern that decides to make our front cockpit his home. Check out our video to see how we handle both situations.

We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our NEW life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we have very little sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia.
So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too!

I run a fuel polisher on my boat. It will polish my fuel and I have it setup so that it will also transfer fuel from one side to the other. It’s great when your generator side uses more fuel. Also if you have an engine completely die you can put more fuel in the tank of the working engine. Well worth the effort.

Thanks for your response! Diesel fuel system contamination causes and solutions are much misunderstood because they are both non intuitive and hidden. I used to work in the fuel industry in Texas and learned a lot and I encourage you to learn more so that you fix the root cause of your issue instead of dealing with symptoms. Glad the chief mech sorted out the issues. Too late now but did you know that you could have switched your Starlink to the Panama rates? I did about a year ago..$64 per month for the NA region. Same coverage.

YES!! We were only there for 4 months so we didn’t think it was worth the hassle! I think I was more worried about something going wrong in the process. We have had a nightmare changing it here. Stupidly chose Guam and it has been an ongoing headache…will get sorted next month we hope.

Sorry to be a downer but both steel and aluminum cans have plastic liners. They are very thin and you can't see them but when you put them in the ocean, you are adding microplastics to the ocean. Same goes for metal lids on glass jars. I know a lot of sailing KZbinrs do something similar but if you search on it you will see that metal cans all have plastic liners.

I used to work in the fuel industry in Texas and learned a lot and I encourage you to learn more so that you fix the root cause of your issue instead of dealing with symptoms. Here is a detailed video that I did a while back that goes into great detail how the MIC bacteria grows and how it could still cause tank corrosion even with a fuel polisher?
