Why float your chain?
@SailingBlownAway24 күн бұрын
We need to float it for two reasons. The first is not to damage the coral because as the chain swings, it destroys anything in its path. The second is if we short our chain on a coral and the wind picks up, it could break the chain or damage the boat.

Number 12, halyard… it won’t work in all wind strength and it will damage the stack pack. A much better solution is to disconnect from the sail and just lead the halyard aft to the boom end (both lines if open halyard) it will never ever slap, it won’t chafe but you have an extra 30 seconds work to reattach to the sail when required. Everyone thinks a bit of bungee a few feet up the mast on their lines will work, but a small blow and tang tang tang! I live aboard and hate that noise… all visitors are educated to lead their halyards away from the mast completely or I do it for them!
@SailingBlownAwayАй бұрын
Thanks for your comment. We have been doing this for 4 years now with a bungee in all kinds of wind and we have never slapped. Moving the main every time we anchor is not viable. For long term yes of course.

Q&A question for next ep. If not already answered. Autopilot. Do you have a full spare, only spare parts or just a plan to have Tarzan Brown manage the emergency tiller?
@SailingBlownAwayАй бұрын
LOL. We will answer that in next Q&A, but for you I will answer it now too! We have chain, a new ACU, all electrics. The question is do we know how to fix it! HA! We would have to hand steer to get through the passage (more than likely depending on how painful it is!HA) and then fix when we are settled....with some help! :)
@cncarstensАй бұрын
@@SailingBlownAway as I will be statesides for hurricane season I need to solve this problem as well. I assume you have L&S plus what ever MFD manufacturer. I have seen little things on the L&S equipment break like pins, brushes, seals, So I am starting a list of critical spares for L&S kit. Also thinking about a fully independent system like the Raymarine wheel autopilot that I could install fairly quickly which there lies the problem...nothing is every quick on a moving sailboat. I have friends who have installed an entirely new system on the port side.
@SailingBlownAwayАй бұрын
@cncarstens yes, we have new chain, pins, dyneema replacement for steering cables, new ACU unit. We looked into building a secondary but don’t really have room for it. The ones in a box weren’t strong enough to steer our size/weight. Also, We are not hydraulic steering. It’s def worth making sure you have all that you need!
