Seven Lucky Gods
Hotei, Jurōjin, Fukurokuju, Bishamonten, Benzaiten, Daikokuten, Ebisu
It is known that these deities mostly have their origins as ancient gods of fortune from religions popular in Japan: from Mahayana Buddhism (Benzaiten, Bishamonten, Daikokuten) which came to Japan from China but originated in India, and from Chinese Taoism (Fukurokuju, Hotei, Jurojin); except for one (Ebisu) who has a native Japanese ancestry.
These gods have been recognized as such for over a thousand years. In the beginning, these gods were worshiped by merchants as the first two (Ebisu and Daikokuten) were gods of business and trade.
Subsequently, the other classes of Japanese society looked for other gods that could correspond with their professions: Benzaiten as the patron of the arts, Fukurokuju as the patron of the sciences, and so on.
Ebisu - the god of prosperity, commerce, and fishing
Daikokuten - the god of agriculture (hence his being called the “kitchen god”), prosperity, and commerce
Bishamonten - the god of war who defends humans against evil spirits
Benzaiten - the goddess of beauty and the arts
Fukurokuju - the god of wisdom, good fortune, and longevity
Jurojin - the god of longevity and good health
Hotei - the god of happiness and good fortune
Shichifujukin Meguri
Among the many Japanese rites of the beginning of the year, such as the Hatsumode, the first visit of the year to the Shrine to pray for luck in the new year, there is also the #Shichifujukin #Meguri, or the #pilgrimage of the 7 lucky gods. This pilgrimage is usually done in the first seven days of the year and the temples of the circuit are all within a short distance, thus allowing you to complete the pilgrimage in half a day.
Although the Schichifukujin Meguri is a propitiatory rite for the beginning of the year, several pilgrimages, especially those that include major temples, such as the 7 lucky gods pilgrimage in #Asakusa #tokyo, remain active throughout the year. Being more than a religious rite, a porpitiatory rite linked to luck, the Schichifukujin Meguri is open to everyone,
It is to bring us happiness for the coming year by visiting the temples that enshrine each of the so-called 7 Gods, which are Daikokuten, Fukurokujyu, Benzaiten, Bishamonten, Ebisu, Jyuroujin, and Hotei.
Each god has a power to bring you different kinds of luck, so by touring all the gods, you are said to receive all the luck available, such as eternal youth and longevity, booming of business, safety of the home, etc.
