Of course, i'm not mentioning the possibility of duping blocks.

after lots of research (yes, im THAT dedicated to find out what happened here) im certain that the crash had damaged a region file and playerdata ive recreated it on a server and hard crashed it so many times till it got damaged, it seems like its a rare occurrence, i only managed to recreate it once, but what happened here is basically server hard crash=data go brrrrrrrrr usually it affects the entire thing but it does sometimes rarely only affect certain files *check the replies for a detailed explanation of why this occurs*

Its not unique, same thing happened on my server. Idk how to fix it, I just ignored it & it hasn't happened again & it's been 8 months so I'll take that. Yes its caused by certain players when the crash takes place, I had multiple instances of chunk swapping during the crash. The people who were online lost their invs. I fixed the crashing & we just left the glitched area alone, & it's still there if I can find the cords. It was in the boundaries of a players kingdom.

I remember having a very similar issue on one of my own worlds a few years back, turns out a trojan had gotten into my save files. Once I removed it with anti virus the chunk corruption stopped. It may be as simple as the server has or had a virus on it.

How about "Ragnarök"? It seems like the server is corrupting players' inventories and chunks(a series of events(invent wipe)/'natural' disasters(chunk corruptions)), and everyone is still angry(as per usual) at each other, so a large scale battle could break out from nowhere(a great battle), and could soon meet it's end(the submersion of the world in water (in this case, the server stops completely for good)). It just seems like the best answer to this question.

I've ran many personal servers for me and my friends, and I would consider myself a technical minecraft player. This exact bug has happened to me and my worlds multiple times. After using world editors and reading log files and code, I've found out generally what's happening. In summary, from my experience the effected chunks are entirely based on a player and their render distance. What caused the corruption was very likely the server crash and consequential corruption of the World folder, since during a crash there are certain (unknown) circumstances that cause the saving of the chunks in the region file to conflict with the updating of the chunks. And moreover, both the region files and playerdata files are stored in the World folder. The cloning, duplicating, and resetting of the chunks is entirely random (within the joint of the players render distance and the region file), but what's interesting is the reset chunks with the emeralds in it. From my experience that indicates a complete corruption of that chunk, whereas the server is unable to update, reset, or write to that chunk without world editor injection. Upon resets of the server I hypothesize (from experience) that the chunk in question will be reverted to the seed again. This can be confirmed by looking that the chunk in any world viewing software and if the chunk is entirely black and void, this is what happened. As far as I can tell, this has no indication of any sort of major breakthrough on duplicating. And if I'm right, the only duplicating that could be done is those emeralds, once every server reset. Take everything here with a grain of salt, it's just my experience with this issue.

Can confirm this happens. Used to maintain large public modded servers and this would happen frequently. Chunk corruption was pretty common, and large parts of the map had to be reset to maintain stability. Chunk corruptions would typically occur when a player was within chunk render distance and an entity/item with conflicting data would cause a crash. It could be due to an item in a player's inventory causing an issue with an entity, or an item/entity within the chunk render distance that was not behaving correctly. The easiest method was to wipe the chunk and/or deleting the item from the player's inventory. When this happened pretty often (more than once a day), the world would typically be reset. We were usually lucky to get 6-8 months per map. Newer versions of Minecraft automatically reset chunks if a major corruption occurs, forcing a restart. It's uncommon for players data to be wiped as a result, but does happen from time to time. We did work out there were performance issues with the saving and loading processes, from CPU cache size to storage speed irregularities.

I saw 8.3 TB show up a few times in the comments; if that's the actual world size then it's 8x larger than my PC's entire SSD (although I could afford 8TB of hard drives for another project). In terms of bulk file storage it's not unthinkable, but for a SINGLE world save that's a massive amount of data, considering one or two terabytes can store a typical PC gamer's entire library including saves. Heck even other popular MC servers like Hermitcraft or Scicraft are only a few gigabytes...
