The rules are the rules and yes the mvp can be on the losing team of the Stanley Cup Finals but it just seems stupid considering that although they had a strong statistical performance throughout the playoffs, wouldn’t the ultimate metric be to have performed in such a manner and the impact have resulted in the individual and team success to win the Cup? I personally think it should be restricted to the winning team but that’s just my opinion.

The point is that the Conn Smythe should be for the mvp of the winning team. It should never go to a player from the losing team. I don't give a fuck if they score 100 points. McDavid was phenomenal in these playoffs, no one is denying that...but he lost. Him not coming out to receive the award speaks volumes about how that award meant nothing to him and understandably so.

MVP stands for the “most value able player” it doesn’t technically mean you have to win to be the most value able player, yes that’s often how it falls is the best player from the winning team gets awarded the Conn Smythe trophy but not always, most commonly when the conn smythe goes to someone on the losing team is a goaltender, who “stood on his head” and relished a near comeback with near impossible odds, and seemingly obvious underdogs. The last time this has happened was 2003 when Jean-Sebastien Giguere won it. He was a massive part in the Anaheim ducks making it all the way to game 7 against an insanely stacked Detroit red wings team, just look up the Red Wings roster in 2003… absolute gems out there. Man on paper the Anaheim’s ducks are screwed I remember thinking they were gonna get swept but if I’m not mistaken I believe the ducks won in double OT or something. Just shows you anything can happen and momentum can shift

There would be a lot more controversy if he hadn’t won given how he just had one of the best playoff performances of all time. If anything, conn smythe should be given to someone from the winning team because clearly the winning team player’s effort probably mattered more in the long run than the losing teams player.
