When the thermostat housing is broken, it is rather tricky to install and keep in place the outer o-ring with high risk of water leakage thereafter. So best to replace it when broken.

It's not a spacer. The thermostat housing is broken. I have always replaced the housing when it is broken. Good to know that you can re-use it. It is a a cheap part though.

+lisawitteduncan it is a spacer btw it holds the thermostat against the block to seal it

nope. at me it was fixed tot the hose. Tried to remove it from it but i am glad it didnt came loose. This video was really handy. I didnt removed the coolant. I put a paper cup reversed in the hole so the least amount of coulant got lost. And i topped it of with new coolant Many thanks

Terrible design using cheap plastic parts, but not a "spacer". It's also not a washer, it's an O-ring. Mr. Mechanic should know better, REPLACE THAT BROKEN PART

I have a 2009, c180, w204, I think the thermostat and housing is the same. The hose, spacer, rings, thermostat, ALL CLICK together, and then slide in as one assembly. Well, that is how it was with my car, when I replaced my thermostat.

Hello, there'a a little error in the sequence you mount back the different elements that could lead to a costly problem. The seal ring (rectangular section) should have been mounted after the thermostat (in front of it and not in the back) and not before! When you first extract the old thermostat is clear that the seal ring is in front of it but when you put it back you squeeze it in before.

If you think about it, the o-ring is there to stop fluid from entering the other side. In this case fluid (coolant) comes from the hose not from the engine block. It would make sense that the o-ring needs to be on the side that stops the coolant which would be on the side facing the coolant hose.

Question: I own a 2000 Mercedes Benz s430, it's been (attempting) to overheat but I turned on the heater on hi to have the can release the pressure and drive. I checked the fluid, that's fine, I also checked the hose and they have water in them. So the issue is the temperature gage raises to almost red but as I turn on the heater it lowers. I have noticed that on the freeway the needle lowers but if I do any driving in town, it goes higher again. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks

After I replaced my thermostat I have been experiencing slow but steady coolant leakage. I did not break my plastic housing while replacing it. Used new thermostat and new o-rings. Any idea what could have cause it to leak? P.S. I did not drain any coolant, there is a little bit of coolant coming out when you pull out thermostat but its not much.

My c180 kompressor won’t get up to temperature when it is still without interior heating on it will get to 80 degrees but while driving unless in stop and go traffic it won’t get to operating temperature. Should I replace the thermostat? Also it is winter right now about 10 degrees Celsius outside maybe this is why it’s not hot?

ACDelco coolant is not recommended and can do long-term damage to the aluminum and plastic parts in the coolong system. Mercedes are amazingly picky vehicles. It's always best to use OEM or OEM equivalent.

I know German's like to prove they can do things better than others, it's who they are. But over all I will take a German car over any US or Japanese car. I have owned many different vehicles, all makes and the best cars I have ever owned were German. Yes some are a btch to work on but as far as durability you cannot beat a German car. Any car will last if you take care of it but German cars last much longer. Used to be Germans bought 2 or 4 cars in their lifetime, many Germans joke that Americans buy new cars when the ash tray is full.

2006 C230 doesn't have the M271 4 cylinder anymore. It has the M272 V6 engine. Thats why it is different. Yours will be a metal housing/thermostat with a temp sensor on the side. This video has several errors. The housing is broken, and the o ring goes on the end of the housing and the thermostat snaps onto it. Thats why that metal tab is on the thermostat, to hold it in place against the seal on the end of the housing. It should go into the engine as one big piece and not in pieces like this.
