Hi it will draw 12- 13amp on full pwr 85w so that is pushing it but if your sticking to 50w max it will be fine i would say. But I always prefer to over do it and I run a 25-30 amp psu.73 hope this helps

I am fairly new to Ham radio, and after watching a few videos, I just bought a shiny new Yaesu 2980R/E. I was hoping to use this for maybe communications but also for fun and occasional hearing of local news (police/fire/ems) and occasionally airline traffic etc as I live next to an airport. Just something I was curious of. Now after playing, I just found out that this doesn't do all those frequencies and now wondering what best use I can do with my new radio. Thanks
@M0YKSHamRadio4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, good to hear your getting into Ham radio. The radio you have is a great piece of kit to use to make a radio contact on the 2m fm simplex band and repeaters. It will also receive NOAA weather sats, as well as a few LEO Sats and the ISS. You can also hear commercial taxi but dependant where your located as in country I am unsure of what else. Hope you get into your new radio and make some contacts. I made 3 contacts today on mine which were all new stations to me, there is a lot of new comers getting on the 2m FM band recently. Its what we need, best 73 Simon M0YKS

@@M0YKSHamRadio Thanks much for your response Simon. I watched your video and must say I was overwhelmed with all the stuff you have there, very impressive. I feel like you are like an airplane pilot. I will keep my radio as I bought it, and will try to learn some stuff on how to use it. I am located in NY, and I looked up the radio reference frequencies online, and looks like none of police, fire/ems, airlines are in my range of frequencies here where I am. So I will now get my licence and then try to communicate with new ham buddies that I will be able to within my 2meter radio capacity. Thanks again, 73, Mike.

Great to hear you are gonna go for it. Its much easier to do these days and well worth the effort. Hi Steve, it's a great radio for the price, the recieve is excellent as is the transmission I am very satisfied. However like you say not any other bands so if your a big 70cms fan its worth paying a bit more. Its fairly quiet this end on 70cms and I am fortunate to have a number of radios to operate on that band which I do when working SATELLITE which is very active. So I guess you need decide what you might want to do now and possibly in the future such as working the SATELLITE bands where dual band is essential. Have fun deciding hope you end up as happy as I am. Best 73 stay safe. De M0YKS Simon

@@M0YKSHamRadio will i need to buy a separate power supply for it? Also how tall is your aireal? 73S
@M0YKSHamRadio4 жыл бұрын
@@sweeneyTodd-de4by yes you need a decent 30 amp power supply unit. also some coax with plugs/socket connectors. The Diamond F23 is about 15ft quite big. There are smaller antennas out there. This particular one is a single band antenna and has excellent receive and TX capability over other vertical 145 mhz antennas.
@johnc34034 жыл бұрын
Hey Simon, a word to the wise here. If you are running two rigs through the same PSU and they share another piece of kit in common, like an external speaker, you MUST NOT use the fuse in either rigs negative lead (as supplied). Because, if either rigs negative fuse were to blow, the rig would still power up finding a return via the speaker wire and through the other rig. That's OK until you key up and the rig tries to draw 20A through the other rigs audio stage. I have NO IDEA why Yaesu put a fuse in the negative lead (only old classic cars have positive-grounds systems). They are worse than pointless, they are dangerous. ALWAYS bypass them in a shack setup. Nice review btw, I have one on it's way from ML&S as we speak.. cheers, John EI5JS
@M0YKSHamRadio4 жыл бұрын
Hi John, sorry for the late reply. Good advise and something that could easily happen. Fortunately my setup does not share any hardware and each radio has a separate ext speaker. BUT I am glad you mentioned it because you could prevent someone else considering this. I could see it happening with the yaesu speaker as it has the switch allowing different inputs, but as said I have separate ones anyway. Hope you like your new radio. Look forward to working you one day. Best 73 Simon

@3qdx4 жыл бұрын
Maybe I missed it....but at about 6:40 you show your meter with voltage/power output etc. I was REALLY hoping you would test it for output to see if it actually puts out 80w and does it STAY at 80w after sustained transmissions? Some rigs won't and will reduce output as they heat up.
@M0YKSHamRadio4 жыл бұрын
Hi great question. I have had it a few months now and have always run full power 85W into the Diamond F-23 and have a power meter in line. I have not noticed any deterioration in output power and my overs are reasonable. The radio does however become very hot and takes a while to resume room temp when talking for a long period of time, but again no problems detected. So far I am very satisfied with this model and I have also got a FT-2900 60W similar build but older up at my holiday shack which again is solid, had it over 15 years. Hence the reason I bought this one. Best 73 hope this helps. M0YKS
