They had a 3 day special sale for this unit at my PA for $1200 ! Wasn't shopping for a chipper, but couldn't turn it down for what looks like a pretty sturdy machine. I had thought of having one, but have flinched at the 3 to 4K for similar big brand machines capable of 4+ inch limbs. I live in a rural area in the dry interior of BCwith 20 acres of trees and brush. Chipping all that fuel on the forest floor does a lot to lessen the fire hazard. Thanks for the video Reg, great mods on yours! I'm able to pull mine wherever I need with my Polaris 6X6 ATV.

We've got the exact same one! It's an awesome machine! Also Reg, pay attention to the cover where the belt and wheels are. The belt sometimes tends to get loose and it starts to rub off of the casing, if not stopped it can cause it to rip completely. All the best!

I have a DR 475 (was essentially new, got a great deal) and it has been fantastic. I did my homework so I knew going in that the 4 3/4" was a stretch.. but it does 3" and under like an absolute champ. The only thing I don't like about it is the narrow wheel base and small tires, but i'm probably going to find a donor chassis off something and fix that. Like yours.. it's all a matter of learning HOW to feed it what you need to feed it. I have changed some of my limbing practices to have it chipper ready. For a single-knife small chipper it works a treat.

I got myself one of these chippers after watching this video and it's been great so far. It's got about 12 hours of use on it and the knives are starting to get dull and damaged. There's been a lot of very dry, hard branches that have gone through.

Definitely need to be extra careful with the knives. The cutting edge has a very acute angle to it, as it's a drum mechanism, so unfortunately it dulls and chips more easily than those on a disk chipper. Mine is now on a motorized 4x4 wheel base. I'll make a follow up video soon.

@@stuby2014 hahaha my worst injury was with a similar chipper, and it happened when I was trying to cold start it. I threw by my back and couldn’t move for 2 days. It hurts just typing it…. Small chippers are awesome for tight access jobs. I've got a 18hp haecksler and I wouldn't part with it. Some types of branches are a pain to chip, but once you know the capabilities of your machine you'll know which approach to take for different cleanup jobs.

Wow, for a minute there mashing laurel with a mini-chipper in the rain I thought you'd come back to UK tree work! Then I saw the truck at the end, definitely not. I have a JoBeau. I reckon keeping the knives sharp is like sharpening wood chisels, much better to do a little bit often than let them get blunt. I can get in to mine with diamond pad without taking them off so easy to do, don't know about that one. Next stage is if you have to move chip out, get a petrol powered barrow with greedy boards.

It's great, and improved since I mounted it on a 4x4 power cart. Now it will anywhere, even up steps. I'll put a video out soon. Biggest pitfall is the blades are junk. They dull top easy, I think due to the sharp angle they are set to. But is necessary for a drum chipper

I have a similar size & design of chipper made by Range Road. Most important things are checking the belt tension, making sure it’s empty before starting, and being ready to hit the emergency shut off if anything slips or sticks.

Looks pretty good! Those 420cc engines can develop a lot more than 15 hp with higher lift camshaft and cylinder head work. Might be easier than re-powering with a V-twin, since you can't get much more power on a single cylinder. Back in my youth playing with go-karts we would shave some off the cylinder head to get the compression up, re-grind our camshaft for more lift and port the intake and exhaust out. Now I imagine you can get bolt on cylinder head that does all that

My chipper has the briggs 420cc. Is there any more insight you can provide on that, or a reccomended forum/source of info? I really like the overall weight of mine. I'd ABSOLUTELY build mine a little. Mine has -almost- enough power as is.. but it needs just a little kick in the arse.

There's lots of small engine upgrade info on KZbin from the GoKart crowd. As an example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmTTmq1vppilobM The guys that really get into kart engine builds will fiddle with valve and lifter configs, carb and horsepower/ torque curves and dyno testing. Probably only really limited by how much money you want to spend. And maybe the need to change v belt pulley sizes perhaps, to accommodate the go go juiced up engines. There's also lots of warnings about steel flywheel upgrades for safety, and valve spring upgrades if you wind these puppies up from stock much. Some builds have doubled horsepower (at much higher RPM in a kart though)! Enjoy.

I got the Jansen gts1500e it has a discharge that can pivot to any direction that I found the most important when getting a smaller chipper so that way you don't have to physically move the machine to change the direction of chips . It's only like 14 or 15 horse power but it gets the job done and then some as long as you don't chip too much wood and keep cut things for the size of the chipper. I've found that gettin this chipper right next to trees that your working on saves alot of time not moving brush and definitely makes up for chipping smaller branches vs a big chipper. Plus these little chippers are vary affordable compared to tow behinds and a great first chipper or main chipper . They do weight around 400 pounds so that tow basket isn't gonna last long unless you have strapes from the basket to a high point of the truck keeping weight from dipping to low on the basket . I do move my on and off by hand it's not east but do able you definitely want some kind of loading system to go with the chipper unless you have another guy to help push

Won't take an undissected cadaver. You have to lop off arms and legs and trim torso. I recommend using an e saw Echo DCS 2500.

Hey Reg, I'm delighted to be able to give yo a bit of advice back for the wealth of knoledge you've provided me over the years. I run a similar machine Jansen gts 1500e, same engine. The problems with the engine I've experienced have been electrical, build a cover for the engine to keep excess rain off and definitely store it indoors. Keep blades super sharp and check regularly. I would also size down on some of the bigger branches you put in there for harder woods like the laurel. A great design feature is the v belts which Im assuming is the same on yours, they tend to shred before there is ever any pressure put on the engine. I swapped my rubber ones out for kevlar ones to extend their life. Watch when feeding in real branchy stuff like beech and birch as the fine tiggy stuff can clog the chute easily, same with large leaved hardwood stuff when wet, sycamore, planes etc.. Sometimes with longer pieces it can be good to feather their input into the machine so as to keep the revs high. Set the blade depth to the absolute minimum mine are set to 0.5mm. Parts are very cheap and they are very easy to work on, change the oil regularly too. My manual recommended first oil change after 5 hours use, and I usually do every 30 hours thereafter. Keep an eye on all the bolts, especially engine mounting ones, adjust tension on belts to every so often as they stretch overtime and will be more likely to shred, come off after this. Well ware I love my one. Finally I believe there is a video on youtube of someone with my model, who did an engine swap for amore powerful engine, he also widened the chute slightly to make loading branches easier.

I got the same chipper and no issues other than yea the stock belts arnt as good as after market ones but did you really buy one and think your gonna leave it out to get rained on ? I always cover mine with tarp I never would think to just park it outside with nothing protecting it from the elements. Only big chippers have thier engines protected from water

Reg - what about a plate kinda thingy/ adapter for the bottom of this lil chipper to take off the wheels and have the plate on, and be able to pick up the chipping unit with the Stein Arbor trolley, wheel it to the back yard or whatever, then set it on the ground with some sort of stabilizer rods or something and chip into a Stein bag on the arbor trolley. When finished, reverse, pick the thing up with the trolley and wheel back to your trailer/ truck, etc. Do ya still like this thing? Seems to have a pretty good HP rating. Cheers.

Is that Laural branches? If it is ya notice it smells a bit like rhubarb pie. Not a bad smell at all. A bit sweet. My wife and I started 3 years ago, out with a 1992 6" morbark that had a 45 degree in feed system like this one. It barely got the chips in the truck. Every 8 minutes of chipping I had to hop in the back and shovel them back and to the sides to make room for more. We did 50k that year but my body was thrashed. It was road towable. Picked it up for 800 cash.

Change the engine oil regularly, clean the air filter and check all nuts and bolts and it will give good service. Keep a good edge on the cutters. Saves time and fuel. These things rattle and vibrate, do not scrimp on daily checks…about 10 minutes and they will give good service. Stating the obvious but stones and nails/staples screw up the blades quick time. I have a similar machine, road towable version and it works well.

IMHO simplest way to reduce unnecessary oil changes on small 4-stroke engine is a small rare-earth magnet epoxied onto drain plug.

@@jacquesblaque7728 …The use of a magnet certainly helps, but contaminants in the oil other than ferrous decrease the life of these Chinese built engines. It takes no longer than 15 minutes to drain and refill these engines, we have a few, and refill with one litre of oil and your away. Whilst the oil is being drained, we grab the opportunity to check belts/bolts etc.

@@andycapp8843 I don't use cheap oil, only use full-syn, and flat refuse to toss it after only 5-8 hrs. It's a valuable resource. When I periodically check the magnet on a new engine, I see diminishing accumulation of metallic fines. IME ferrous debris in the oil presents the greatest threat to internal engine surfaces. I refuse to just throw out an almost-new charge of lube because of design stupidity/cheapness. No, it's none of your racist Chinese crap; it's widespread. You're badly misled.

There are of course many uses for old engine oil, our excavator buckets when not in use are cleaned and wiped with an oily rag for instance. The small single cylinder engines in these machines have no filtration system as you are no doubt aware and I went on to support your point regarding ferrous metal and magnets. Every little helps. Carbon is also abrasive, will not be picked up by a magnet and regular oil changes will increase the life of these very basic engines. Not quite sure why you mentioned racism, what if anything were you implying? Having worked with machines and engines for around 55 years my knowledge is based on experience governed by the commercial need to keep the wheels rolling and profits maintained to pay employees wages. You of course were not to know that but simply came to a very wrong and misguided conclusion based on facts plucked from thin air it would seem.

I had the hyundq8 7070-2, i loved that machine, i literally wore it out with work. I just upgraded to a crytec terminator.... guys, it truly is a weapon, anvil chippers are far anad away better than drum chippers, everything is also far easier to access for maintenance. So when any of you are ready to upgrade you need to go with the anvil chippers, far superior!!

I noticed that you didn't wear gloves at the beginning and after a while you did wear them. The kickback from the branches can really hurt your hands I always wear my thickest gloves while chipping. Impressive little machine for the cost.

Nice looking chipper. I have a Hyundai which looks pretty much the same machine and overall I think this size of chipper is pretty good as long as you don’t try to work it too fast so it gets time to clear the chute. The downside to my machine is that clearing the out-chute after a blockage is a complete pain in the arse. Hopefully this will pay for itself pretty quick 👍🏻

I would be wary of adding more horsepower. Easy to get overzealous with light duty machines...more power could do some damage with wood that is just a little too hard for it to handle at capacity. Ask me how I know.

I’d appreciate some comments: do you like this machine, why did you chose this model, how about using it for trees that have more rigid branches like oak (I suppose it may be difficult to feed oak branches into this chipper), etc. I value your comments a lot. I got the arbor trolley based on you recommendation.

I haven't used it enough to form an opinion one way or another. Small push around chippers for tight access doesn't seem to have caught on here in Canada so there's not a lot of choice. Certainly theres nothing being produced by the likes of Bandit and Vermeer. I did look at some others. Even bought one and sent it back because the flywheel was warped. But this one actually seemed to be well built and has a shape that I could work with to reduce the width to less than 2ft. The weight was also important that is was less than what the hitch carrier is rated for. I liked the idea of it being mounted to the back of the truck for transport instead of needing a seperate trailer on wheels. The shoot also needed to be high enough for me to shoot the chips onto the back of the truck if need be. If it turns out I dont like it or dont use it enough then I can certainly find another use for that engine, like building a winch. But I suspect it will get plenty of use as is. I charged $950 for that laurel hedge job. Took me a morning to complete. So that's already half if what the chipper cost. The chipping took about 25 mins. Laurel chippings is otherwise difficult for me to get rid of because it contains cyanide, and where I normally dump is in a field full of cows. It would only take a couple of Kg to kill a cow once ingested. So, there's lots of incentives for a relatively small investment.

What timing, I've been thinking how practical or useful a portable chipper with reasonable capacity could be, lots of tight access, poor terrain jobs. Here in Aus Hansa chippers seem to be the market, expensive but well designed.

How useful have you found the chipper to be? Has it worked all right on fir branches? Or do you tend to stick with a larger chipper for that application. I am about to go out on my own and the 2k price point is tempting. I fear that it will be too limiting though; I work in western WA, so similar trees to you.

More useful since I mounted it on a 4x4 wheel base. So now it will drive pretty much anywhere, even up steps. So I use it when I can chip in back yards, or if I'm on a very short or awkward driveway, where the big chipper is impractical or impossible. The compromise is obviously the slower chipping time and limited diameter size that I can feed through it. The blades are not particularly tough either. But when chipping on site in back yards, or up trails, it has saved an immense amount of time and labor. Of it were my only chipper then I would replace the engine with a slightly bigger one, and modify the indeed chute so it's shorter and wider. But as is I switch between the 2 chippers depending on the task.

Is the intake chute angle maybe a bit too severe? It seems like the longer more flexible branches tend to hang up a bit on the lower lip.

I think its long and stuck up in the air like that to maximize the gravity, especially for lighter and shorter branches. The longer limbs definitely need some help.

I figured that was the case, but it seems you really have to lift things quite high to get them in, a little less angle would seem to help with that while still providing some gravity feed. Definitely a lot easier to load things into a typical flat chipper chute.

@@Recoates the long chute also prevents people sticking their hands into the blades as they can't physically reach that far. I've a Jo-Beau one of these and they're great for the kind of stuff you're putting through. Sharp blades absolutey essential otherwise it's a proper ballache. They also hate bare sticks as I think you've already found out! Also - if your's is anything like mine it's important to ensure the chute is completely clear of material before turning off. I've found even quite small twigs/partially chipped stuff can prevent the flywheel from rotating on start up.

Reg, I would really like to know how it does with orchard prunings, if you do any orchards. That looked to self-feed reasonably well. Would you comment on the self-feeding capacity?Too many smaller size/ HP chippers need the wood pushed against the blades Thanks.

Well the feed shoot is obviously long and steep to maximize the gravity and so worked cant reach the blades when reaching down. But it seems like as soon as a branch reaches the blade its gonna get so sucked through, unless it has a thick sturdy crotch. Put it this way, its very difficult to pull a limb back out once the drum has it. So I would think orchard cuttings, normally long and straight will breeze through in a heartbeat.

That little chipper doesn’t seem near the trouble its worth. A pain in the ass to load and unload plus it only handles tiny limbs. Not sure it would be much easier to drag those small limbs by hand to the truck and load them there and just dump them somewhere in the woods. It seems much more effective and profitable over that little kiddie chipper!😎. But thats just me!

On this particular site there wasn't an Advantage. But on some sites where the big chipper might be 50 yards away with lots of tight little corners and precious ornaments, items, plants, flowers etc at every turn it will be very helpful.

For the money and the size of the machine I wouldn't grumble. There are always better machines out there but they come with a bigger price tag and then you need to think am I going to get my monies worth out of it? I've certainly been guilty of buying machinery for work and then realizing I just don't use it enough when it either gets parked up in the stores or sold on. Hope you get good use out of it.

Have to say that chipper looks awful. I have a Rock Machinery Venom 13hp CVR-85, it’s go two wheels and a prop so I don’t have to ad another set of wheels to turn, electric start, does 3 inch with ease and with the exchange was the same price.

@@therealbenriley this one doesn't go up a steep ramp by hand, it's too heavy. The one for the cargo carrier is quite abrupt because it doubles as a gate. Maybe 2 could push it up but not on my own. As well as being able to take it onto back yards, I'm just sick of dragging the big machine around for little jobs. With the truck an bandit chipper I'm 36 ft feet combined, can never park anywhere if I need to stop at a shop on the way home, as well as forever squeezing it in to tight bendy driveways. The little machine just gives me options and keeps the truck nice and compact.

@@Recoates exactly! Here where I am half of time you have j no chance parking with a truck and chipper it’s that busy! I winch mine straight into back of high roof van and I don’t have to worry about thieves following me as it’s in van and not on show! Lots of benefits to a small compact chipper!
