Sometimes, wide open flat land is a welcome sight. When you can see several miles in every direction, it gives you a true sense of how enormous the good ol' USA is!

They say it's so flat you can watch your dog run away for three days.

For the first time in my life, I drove east on I-20 from its western end all of the way to Dallas in December 2019. In September 1995, I drove all of the way from El Paso to San Antonio on I-10.

I'm a fun drive, if you can get past the 1,000 miles of endless trees beside me between Dallas and Florence, South Carolina, with one break from it in Atlanta. And I go through such exciting getaway destinations like Shreveport, Jackson MS, Birmingham, Columbia SC. What's not to love, really?...

East of Big Spring you leave the desert and the scenery gets greener and you start seeing trees.

on this day 17 years ago on a Friday, on May 26, 2006, Texas was the first state to post 80 mph. speed limit increased from 75 to 80 west of the Pecos River (Reeves Co)& from 70 to 80 east of the Pecos River (Ward Co)
@redmanr5522 Жыл бұрын
I-20 was higher than 70 only in Reeves County, & I-10 was higher than 70 from Hudspeth to Kimble County, extending the higher speed limit further east into Ward County I-20 & western part of Kerr County I-10 on 5/26/06.

I can see why they say I-20 is bland there in West Texas. It looks like you immediately hit green right after I-20 begins when on I-10 going east you have to go at least past Fort Stockton or halfway between Fort Stockton and Ozona before I-10 begins to transition from desert to green.
@InterstateKyle2 жыл бұрын
I wanna say I-20 was a lot greener from the very wet 2021 Monsoon Season. This area of Texas is considered semi-arid so I would imagine the terrain is a lot more desert-like in "normal" years vs when this was filmed. It's amazing what rain does to the desert, am I right?!

Thank you for posting this particular trip. In 1939 my mother was born here in Pecos. Until she was in junior high school. Then moved to Washington State. Grandpa was an operating engineer and travelled to where work was plentiful. Cool to see the area where she grew up.

I've only driven i20 around Dallas a few times. i20 in west Texas reminds me of i5 or highway 99 in California.

Interesting. Flat, but interesting. Obviously one continuous even downhill grade, given the elevation changes that are reported.

Moving to CA in 1989, my family via Grayhound took I-20 in Texas Westbound & I still remember the ride- esp given that it took nearly the whole day to arrive at El Paso from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metro! & parts of it does remind me of I-5 in the Central Valley.
@InterstateKyle2 жыл бұрын
I can see where you would make the comparison! The one thing I'll say about I-20 vs I-5 is that the speed limit on I-20 is a lot more reasonable for the terrain (75-80 MPH) vs I-5 which is stuck at 70 for cars and 55 for trucks. Not a fan of car/truck speed limit differentials.

Good video: never been in this part of West Texas, and expected a burnt-over desert for the most part. Some of it sure is, but some of it is surprisingly green by what the video shows. If you stopped at Love's, you made a good choice: their gas prices are usually reasonable, and there's usually someplace there where you can get something to eat. Bring on the next one!
@InterstateKyle2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Besides Buc-cees, Love is probably my second favorite truck stop chain. Always reliable for affordable gas and reasonable accommodates (at least for me) when traveling.

Go east of Big Spring and you start going through the Rolling Plains. You also have some descents at Baird as well as a new alignment of I-20 by TX 16 east of Ranger.
@hrgx19818 ай бұрын
Oh yes, they did make Ranger Hill a lot less treacherous. There is some nice scenery in places west of Fort Worth. The furthest west I've traveled on I-20 is Cisco.

Does Texas have mountains, woods or a seashore? Is there any interesting topography other than flatness. Texans must consume a lot caffeine so they don't fall asleep at the wheel from boredom.
@InterstateKyle2 жыл бұрын
Ummmm my last video literally features some mountains in Texas… also a Google search of “Does Texas have mountains” could give you a faster answer that I could ever give you. Also there are maps you can look at to answer all your questions. The internet is a wonderful thing! Use it to answer your questions my friend!

I-20 from Abilene to just outside Weatherford features some nice scenery a few long hills(descents) and you actually go through a small mountain range called the Palo Pinto Mountains. Also they just completed a total remake of Ranger Hill which was nasty in icy weather and very steep. It is very scenic through this area. I 20 west of Abilene dull and flat. Another great video!

The lack of overpasses you go under definitely adds to the less interesting side of things imo since in Texas, we go over the intersecting roads in most cases.
