Your reviews are so amazing. They aren't like, say, TotalBiscuit, in that they trawl through graphics and minute details or even the game-play. What I really love about these videos are that they're more like an experience, going through the feelings and thoughts that come as an extension to the game. I guess it's this review in particular that stands out to me, as I too adored Deus Ex: HR, pouring hours and hours into it. The best part is that you understand the vast symbolism in the game, along with the thoughts of the future that the Dev's wove through it so well. I hope we get to see something amazing in the next game, and in the future to.

@3:54: With the "Social Bosses" that Deus Ex has, they're actually rather difficult to pull off well technically and technologically. They need to have good writing, good animation, and good voice acting all working in tandem to make you feel like you're having a conversation with an actual person whose emotions and thoughts you can read. To use a good example of something similar: LA Noire had to put a lot of effort into making sure the facial animations and the like to make the interrogations work. With the first Deus Ex game, you have good writing, but the voice acting is generally charmingly bad and the animation is virtually non-existent. So, the whole concept of reading a person through any particularly subtle cues goes out the window.

When I saw trailers back in the early 2010's, I was also hyped because the "Deus Ex" franchise was going to be revived. A shame that I never got to play the game itself. "Human Revolution" had most of the bells and whistles that the first game had, but what also struck me was how most characters seemed alive. Even when I was watching people's walkthroughs, I was hoping for characters to have good outcomes. One day I'll be able to accomplish that if I play "Human Revolution." With "Mankind Divided" on the way, I'll look forward to "Deus Ex" being taken to another level. Here's hoping that there will be stronger ties to the original as well. Maybe we'll see the founding of UNATCO, meet the DuClares, learn how Bob Page and Walton Simons became megalomaniacs, and encounter the Denton brothers themselves.

the boss fights in deus ex were the most challenging moments for me. I'd save the game and try out different approaches. Flee? or set up a chain of LAMs in a corridor, only to run past it with the speed enhancement, so that by the time Walton Simon reached, he'd be blown, and I'd just loose a leg or two at max. This was more exciting, because, if i failed, I'd die, because I wasn't equipped for combat. I never felt that thrill and pride while playing HR. It was straight away suicide here in the boss fight. I miss the carefully planned traps. Reappearance of Maggie Chow if you didn't kill her. 3 chances to kill Anne Navara. Killswitching Gunther, or wait, just Flee! Saving Malik was quite satisfying though. (Paul and Jock scenario maybe?) And one more thing. I need my SPY DRONES back!!! Deus ex Human Revolution is a great game by it self. Loved it. Played it thrice. But it isn't nostalgia good.

I know this video is pretty old, so it's unlikely you'd still be reading the comments, but I do recommend checking out his Game Dungeon videos on the Deus Ex series. 6:00 I don't necessarily think that automatically means it's better though. In Deus Ex, sure, but in general? Not in my opinion. I feel like in most cases, the games feel half-assed whenever they take this approach. I'm not talking about Deus Ex because I haven't really played it that much. But games like Skyrim and Far Cry just feel so... bland. I am one of those who thinks Skyrim is one of the most overrated games ever. How can a game where fighting is such a big part of the game, have such bland and just beyond awful combat "system". I don't know how diverse people consider Skyrim, but they seem to have tried to let you approach quests in your own way a bit (stealth or full force). Anyway, I personally like it more when it's like Half-Life 1 & 2, fully planned ahead, lets the developers know exactly what the player will have in their inventory and so on. Another thing I don't like usually is leveling systems, that way you can get way too overpowered, or you may be too underpowered, which just leaves me in a constant uncertainty whether I am at an appropriate level or not. Way to butcher leveling completely and just make it pointless... Skyrim... What is the point of leveling if enemies are just going to scale to your leveling. I've been playing Dark Souls 1 now for a while, and I've run into a problem. I am incredibly overpowered I feel like, which makes areas ridiculously easy, on my first playthrough. You know, the game that people brag is incredibly hard, now ruined, because apparently I "grinded" too much... even though I never really grinded... So yeah, the little bit of Deus Ex HR I played was ruined for me because of XP, and the inventory system makes me claustrophobic lol.

Coming back to this after playing most of it myself. As someone grown up on tf2 and bioshock, I agree with everything you say, but can't help but be distracted by the clunky core gameplay. I guess it looks cool when you roll from cover to cover, but why not instead remove the oppressive cover system and give the player a combat roll to use freely? I also hate how augs break up the gameplay into cutscenes, some which you have to see over and over, like the icarus one. Was first person animation too hard? Movement overall feels terrible, like how you fall down so abruptly after jumping, and how you have to stand up from crouch first to then sprint. Many of these 'issues' can be nullified by getting implants, like jump height and sprint distance, but to me, manually unlocking things that should be definitive parts of the fps toolkit is not fun progression. The guns feel like they have no impact, and if an enemy thinks he is standing behind cover you literally cant hit him, even if he's clearly visible. On the hardest mode, if someone remotely close to you fires a shotgun blast in any direction, you just die instantly, no matter what. All that said I still get the adrenaline pumping when the soundrack kicks in and I'm invisible in the midst of 20 guards, there is something about this game that just makes you feel like you outsmarted someone, and I guess thats why I'll finish it. That and of course the pretty well written story
@Chemicalnurd9 жыл бұрын
I loved human revolution, and thought it was the successor deus ex deserved (unlike invisible war, let's just pretend that didn't happen) but I still vastly prefer the original. Just personal preference though and the original does have many faults, it can't be denied. I just missed a lot of the depth from the original - the lack of quest markers making you not only find information, but also take it in and piece things together yourself. The 12 augmentations that you actually activated manually (albeit some of them were pretty boring). The safe falling augmentation that also let you run like the wind, and didn't play a cutscene every single time you fell off something tall... But most of all the damage system. Playing on realistic and being well aware that a stray bullet to the face would end me instantly, or getting both my legs broken and having to crawl to safety.. You really had to actually think about every fight before you got into it, granted the enemy ai was very poor. Something about the original really felt like YOU were in control of the game and had to do things yourself, it was much more immersive, and I missed that a lot in HR. But, I did still absolutely adore Human Revolution and had a stupid grin on my face for pretty much the entire duration of the game. Except from the bosses. And the ending.

having played the original deus ex 2 weeks ago, i just played and finished human revolution last week. and honestly, i didnt enjoy it nearly as much as the original or mankind divided. the thing that struck me immediately was how incredibly frail you are, one enemy can concievably kill you in under a second if they get the drop on you or you miss a few shots. i played the original deus ex pretty gung ho, but it felt like i was very much forced to play stealthily. the problem with playing stealthily is that if you poke out of cover you are aiming at nothing and get spotted instantly, and if you wait for the enemy to come close for a takedown, the range is so pitifully small that you basically have to mash the takedown button to get it before they round the corner and spot you. and when they do spot you, every enemy on the planet is immediately hostile and knows exactly where you are. problems with the combat and stealth aside, i found the exploration of its levels far less enjoyable that the originals for a number of reasons. the foremost reason is definitely the sprint mechanics. they add nothing, pressing the shift key every 5 seconds just to move at half the speed of the original deus ex isnt gameplay, it's tedium. the other big issue is that side missions are almost exclusively obtained while doing the main story, and nowhere else, and the actual content of these side missions just isnt there until you have actually accepted the mission from the designated start point somewhere in the main story progression, so exploring the levels just leads to a bunch of empty rooms. another big issue i have is with the dialogue choices. the casie aug just makes these sections play themselves. when i dont have to give a shit what they are talking about, and just watch how many times each of the circles glows, i stop caring about anything thats going on, and it's a serious disconnect for me. also, with the casie aug and the ability to 100% get the best outcome every time from every dialogue, the game just feels way to easy. you just get let into anything with virtually 0 consequences. also, the dlc mission that gets integrated into the story with the directors cut version was actually painful to play. the security scan booths were the most obvious loading screen maskers i've ever seen, and they took like 10 times longer than just a loading screen would have taken. and you need to cross them a minimum of like 6 times. the chick that pulls you to the side in the prision thing has absolutely no payoff, just one minute she's there, the next, she isnt. she's labeled as having been "transfered to a different facility", and you never see her again. mankind divided did basically the same setup but way better, with the choice of who's passport to validate, and whoever you dont choose, you see later in golem city. but i think the biggest issue by far i have with HR is the lack of agency in the narative, and i think the single best example of this is the first cutscene with zhao(?, the woman after the fight in the room with all the dudes with no skin). it's the most obvious double cross attempt i've ever seen, and you are powerless to do anything about it. at no point did i feel like anything i did had any relevance to the narrative as a whole. and on the subject of narrative, the way the ending choice is presented is just ridiculous. it feels so gamey in a moment that should elevate it above that, and it really suffers because of it in my eyes. i know i've done nothing but shit on it for like 5 paragraphs, but i did enjoy HR, but it feels like it truely pales in comparison to both the original and mankind divided tldr; you die too fast, the guard hivemind knows where you are instantly, exploring feels unsatisfying, dialogue feels like a formality bc casie aug, the dlc mission plays bad and feels out of place, and it felt like i had no agency in the story or the ability to enjoy side stories at my own pace

I really hope Mankind Divided will be as good. Graphically it definitely would be, but considering the trailers I've seen so far... The story doesn't seem that good. Also I hope they will release multiplayer this time, this will attract even more players from a different audience to the game. You didn't talk about the endings, weird. I found them disappointing to be honest. Not the endings themselves but the way they were executed and shown. The old Deus Ex showed you the aftermath (to its best ability) of your choices. This one just takes you into a long monologue in Adam's mind with scenery that doesn't really show you what happens in the world after your choice. With that said, I'll play any Deus Ex as long as they keep them coming and keep them interesting. Just living in those cyberpunk worlds alone is enough reason. There aren't nearly enough cyberpunk games that are as immersive. That is until Cyberpunk 2077 comes out, but we're still a long way from that game being released.

they improved the combat but it's not a run and gun game.

Is it just me or does the Director's Cut give you too much ammo? I replayed the game on the DC version after my first run and I had over 200+ ammo all the time.

I'm gonna guess you're like me and use takedowns on everyone. That would explain it.

No, I often used my tranq, stun and pulse ammo quite liberally.

I stun gunned about 2/3rds of the enemies on every level and I still managed to have around 20 stun gun rounds at any time

Too bad Eidos Montreal failed so monumentally at the new Thief game though.

I really could not get past the first couple levels in this game. When I got it, I expected at least competent controls for shooting, but it had to be the worst feeling game I had ever felt. It felt too stiff, both in movement and in combat. I can see why people stealth it, because nobody would ever want to shoot through it with the controls it has.

Still feels old as today's standards, where AAA titles now are mostly graphics and just mediocre storyline. Deus ex HR is just something so special.
