This is one of the most underrated games of the last several years. Opportunities for creative exploration and environmental storytelling in an open world/hub space were maybe never done better than they are here. Puts Cyberpunk to shame. Interesting take. I really enjoyed the game, to the point where I think it may have been the best Action crpg of 2016, and certainly one of the best multi-platform games of the year. That said, I was still pissed at Square. Not the devs in Montreal, the publishers themselves. The DLC was pulled from the game and modified a bit, and roughly 1/3 of the game was cut altogether from the end for the next installment which they cancelled soon after release do to poor sales. The jail DLC? That was supposed to be in the beginning of the game. I forget the quote from Square but it was akin too “People don’t want 90 main stories, and add microtransactions”. The game was obviously made not even knowing they would be added, and the reason so many characters or stories seemed unfinished was because the game had those 30 hours cut, and the 3 DLC’s pulled from the game a month, possibly less, before launch. It was like a movie that needed to be 3 hours long, and the studio saying “No, we’ll get less money in ticket sales because there will be less showings. Chop it in half”, and they left a ton of film on the cutting room floor. It’s a testament to Eidos Montreal that the game made sense at all. Square should be disgusted with the Augment My Pre-Order campaign (or maybe not, I didn’t really care), but they should be appalled with the cuts, canceling the sequel, just the entire handling of the game and franchise after the fact. “Pre-orders were horrible, we better cut half the game”. “It’s selling badly, forget it, lose what isn’t in the 3 DLC’s, the sequel is cancelled”. So yep, the game was a blast, and I know they said the sequel was cancelled because they needed all hands on deck for new Marvel titles, but following the production from start to finish, that’s a load of crap. I can only imagine how much better the game would have been if it was left the way it was initially submitted for final approval. 80 hour main quest, 100-150 hours of side quests. What the heck was Square Enix thinking? Especially with the length of action crpg’s of late? Skyrim and Fallout 3? Pretty fricken long, though a ton is procedural. The Witcher 3 had recently come out? Pretty fricken long. And the content was already done! It wasn’t like they wanted more money to add to the game. Wow it irks me. My 3 favorite franchises all got screwed in about a year and a half. Deus Ex for being chopped then cancelled which was then changed to “put on hold indefinitely”, then Fallout 4 which was a leap backwards in every way that made the new Fallouts so enjoyable (story, choice, agency as none of those choices matter, but hey, you can build settlements instead of rescuing what you still believe is your young child; but yeah, what parent wouldn’t rather build fricken fences?), and the utter disaster that was Mass Effect: Andromeda. The only one I chose not to finish, as everything felt like a gosh darn chore. None of the “Social Justice” complaints, and I could care if Manveer hates me for being a cis half Caucasian male. The game was just so bad. I didn’t like the fighting. I was not a fan of the story... It was a rough year and a half for my favorite franchises, thank goodness I’d had such a silly library of older games I hadn’t played to get me by, as it’s not just my favorite franchises, it’s the majority of AAA games now. Heh, I finished Divinity: Original Sin 2 then started on the Arkham series as I’d only played the first. At least Madden is back on PC, and gameplay is exactly like it was on the PS3. The tangents Deus Ex Mankind Divided can lead into!
@807D14M0ND55 жыл бұрын
I knew about the low sales and the following hiatus-status of Deus Ex but I had no idea about the cut conten that already was finished!! That's just sad. I really enjoyed the gameplay, and I enjoyed where the story was going. So sad how it just ended with a whimper. And as a slap in the face a cliffhanger in the credits on top of that..

Thanks for the review! I'm in love with human revolution and especially Hengsa, because it not only takes you to a location with a different culture, it also upgrades it to 2027. When I heard Mankind divided is going to be in Prague I was a bit disappointed, because I'm Eastern European Russian, so there is nothing new (culturewise) it could have given to me. But when you see same streets, same people, same swearings, same piles of shit everywhere AND all this cool tech within your own city, it makes you believe that we ARE going to have all those upgrades. Makes you believe that it's just a matter of time when people would have those augmentations within your own place. My own opinion with different perspective.

I think the last game was in Poland... Ehm and Polish and Czech Cultures are West Slavic, so you will see a lot of similiarities, of course you will hear "Kurva/Kurwa" in both games, because Poles and Czechs use it a lot, the languages are kinda similiar. For example. If you meant it like "It didnt give me anything new culturewise because im Eastern Slav" then thats wrong, there are A LOT OF difference between West Slavic cultures and East Slavic cultures, I cant understand Russian, if you came to me spoke to me in Russian, I wouldnt understand you anything... mabye 2% of words, but thats nothing.

This game's narrative is a complete joke. The concept of augmented people experiencing racism is so stupid but the execution is even more cheesy and cringe even the characters are poorly written because they tried to make this awful idea work. I would rather play 1000s of Kingdom Hearts than go through this game's story. The only good things about Mankind Divided's non gameplay parts are a couple of sidequests, level design and Adam's voice actor. I'm so disappointed in this game but since it's short it's very replayable and I've put over 80 hours in this game. I like exploring the levels in this game like the Utulek Complex, Palisade bank, Garm facility, Prague. So much effort put into other aspects but the story is so insulting to the player's intelligence and to the Deus Ex franchise. Also, this game inherits Human Revolution's flaws and only magnifies it like how no one in this world shuts the fuck up about augmentations. Everywhere you go all the npcs only talk about how much they hate Augmented people or how Augmented people are facing "Racism" which makes the world feel very fake and shallow as if this world was a made up to tell this shallow story unlike the original Deus Ex which had such a rich atmosphere.

+2kliksphilip 1.) There isn't any right way to play the game, you can stealth the game, run and gun, juggernaut, etc. This also means you don't have to play necessarily as a good guy, you can kill cops, kill civilians, damage property, deliberately screw some people over, etc. 2.) Ya quick saves. I wouldn't have used them as much if they had more auto-saves but what can ya do. 3.) You can save Miller, the guests, and the main bad guy. You just have to make the right choices. 4.) 15:10 That's the point of augmentations, it saves your time, health, ammo, etc. Try playing the game without augs, it's really hard. (the cloaking and carbon blade shooting augs have saved my ass more than once.) 5.) Hell ya they're going to make a another deus ex!

A weird thing I've decided after coming back and finally (restarting and then) finishing Mankind Divided: while stealthy pacifism still feels like the "best" way to play, I've found that remaining a bystander in some of the moments of oppression is a lot harder to do, especially in today's political climate. I ended up evolving my playstyle into that of a sort of augmented antifascist. While I still wasn't killing police, I made a point of knocking them out and disabling their defenses throughout the late game, and genuinely regretting not doing so earlier on when I saw similar things in Golem City. My Adam Jensen had some incidental character development in that regard, and it solidified the game as something that deserves to be revisited. I just wish I could have actually freed some of the caged citizens, or that they would have taken the opportunity to escape when it became available. It was strange seeing those NPC's fail to react when I jumped in to help them. Maybe that's something they'll do better in the next game.

If you like to explore, the game is really worth it as many sides of the stor(ies) aren't told directly but they are revealed through hints (dialogues, important characters who are seen from afar in cutscenes, lol even some quests and/or special ways to end them are well hidden in the game and need to be found). Also, the game can be improved with mods (graphic ones like the sharders mods but also mods which improve the gameplay like Deus Ex Mankind Divided Hardcore Revival 1.0).

My biggest gripe with this sequel is that I feel the _entire_ game was severely _hobbled_ simply by the fact that we're continuing to play as a pre-defined Jensen - I would *much* rather have started with a new, wholly clean-slate character, who can go his/her own way and find their unique story along the way, without all the last entries baggage dragging on behind... - (of course J could've turned up during the story in a cameo role or whatnot)

With all the features mentioned in this review, Mankind Divided would be a nearly perfect game if only it supported mods. With an unofficial patch, the worst of its glitches could be fixed (memory leaks, missing textures, quickload CTDs, etc). But what most depressed me was a combination of the music and the negative barks by random NPCs. I didn't realize how being told to screw off incessantly by so many random NPCs was depressing my mood until there was a place near the end where people were actually civil and polite. This may be realistic for the setting but not why I game. I just wish it supported mods to fix these problems or at least make them optional (so that I could turn them off).

I literally had to start the whole game over again after the game bugged out. I still had fun with it, but like you said, it was hard to just play it if I could play something else

Spoilers! I was kinda angry with victor as a last boss. The first time i saw him i was like: Please, don't be generic 'im a big-last-boss-guy'. But he was. Sure he has some backstory, but...man. 'HAR HAR IM BULKY TANK BOSS THAT YOU WILL FIND AT THE END OF THE GAME.' From a trailer, i thought that there will be more depth to whole 'cult', victor and that yellow-hoodie terrorist from the trailer. In game, we see him once, at the station and that's it. Lame. I wanted a nice sub-story and i got nothing. I was good at the game and victor was not really a challegne for me, and i was playing as pacifist/stealth/hardest. Also I was angry at the fact, that we are in Golem city only once. C'mon it was such a cool level, it is a sin that we are not able to return to it after police started to freak out. Good game, but these small things bug me.

I just finished Middle Earth:Shadow of War and I had the same feeling. I was always excited to load that game up. Deus Ex I need to convince myself to try again and play. It's super complex, but the game just dumps you into the game, has people yelling at you that they need your help right away and you bumble through the controls trying to figure out what the hell the game wants you to do. The load times are outrageous and the stability stinks. I've had to reboot twice already and I've only played for 4 hours.

2kliksphilip, i've played all Deus EX since the first, i played 2hrs of makind divided only to find the controls/input lag on the mouse a little sluggish which was disappointing, i mean i can run @ 60fps 4k, but its sluggish... Thanks to your review i'm going to give it another go.

I played this on the xbone and the input lag there is pretty horrifying. I worked around it by setting the controller sensitivity as low as possible, otherwise it was impossible to aim.

I just finished the game in 9 hours without doing any side missions and without even learning the cover system! I ran through the game and I felt like it only started when I played the last mission. It's too short.

Of course I know this isn't a "request series", and I know I probably sound dumb asking this, but you should do a review of Mirror's Edge. I consider Portal 2 and Half-Life 2 the best games evaaa, and Mirror's Edge kind of let me re-live that feeling of playing both Valve games for the first time. The sterile feeling of Portal and the futuristic city of Half-Life, backed up with a decent soundtrack just sort of give me this nostalgic feeling. Hopefully you feel the same, too.

I loved mankind divided, and I agree with everything you said. I always got annoyed when people gave MD hate without knowing the reasons why it so short and why the main story wasn't that good. But from what I've heard online, Square Enix actually wanted to sabotage their own game if it doesn't meet their unrealistic sales standards. They apparently did this with Tomb Raider, to the point where Eidos had to fund the OST with a kickstarter. Mankind Divided getting chopped in half was not only so Square could make Jensen's story a trilogy, but also because they wanted development to be a lot cheaper. They hired younger, less experienced devs to make Mankind Divided, to save money. The developers that worked on Human Revolution saw what was happening, and begged Square to reboot the development, but this time with more experienced developers. Square agreed, but under the condition that sales had to surpass their (unrealistic) expectations, or the whole series would be shelved. This was why the game was delayed 6 months. If it wasn't finished by then the entire series would, again, be shelved. The second half of MD was assigned to a different team, to preserve development time and increase profits. Because of this, there was so much content cut from the game. For instance, there's evidence that Golem City was originally meant to become a hub, and that at least 5 side missions were cut. Sarif and Delara were originally supposed to show up in the London section, as well. Pritchard was supposed to be in the base game, but also got cut and got put into the System Rift DLC. I don't know if he was originally supposed to have a bigger part in the story instead of just a side mission, but he was my favourite character in HR, so this really pissed me off. As well as all this, Square Enix made the Breach team come up with alternate methods of funding, aka microtransactions. This was Square punishing Eidos, while still demanding the impossible sales. So, Square Enix sabotaged their own game so they could force Eidos into working on a more profitable game, like the Marvel MMO they're making now. Even if Square Enix themselves said that Deus Ex isn't on an indefinite hiatus, it's still a really shitty thing to do, just so they could make more money. And to give you an idea of how high Square's standards were, Mankind Divided got an average score of 8/10 from various reviewers (and a 9.2 from IGN). For the week of its release, it was the top selling game in the UK, and the 3rd best selling game of August in North America. It also won best console design, best game design, best narrative, best performance, /and/ game of the year in the Canadian Video Game Awards 2016. But all this apparently wasn't good enough for Square Enix to start work on the sequel. TL;DR it's Square Enix's fault that Mankind Divided failed where it did, and it's because of Eidos Montreal that we got a game actually worth playing at all. All because Square are too money hungry to actually care about a beloved franchise and its fans. (Also this is all just information I've picked up over time. I don't know how much of it is true and how much of it is an exaggeration or just straight up lies. Please feel free to correct anything or add your own takes on things.)
