I feel so identified with this video. Don't get me wrong, I love multiplayer games, but bots are the secret sauce most of the times. Bots make you feel special and inmersed, and as you mentioned, keep a game alive when no one plays it anymore. kliksphilip, if you ever read this comment, I recommend you trying out star wars battlefront 2 (2005) and ravenfield. These games will give you a lot of fun and have a very big emphasis in singleplayer experience.

@errantoverflow48287 жыл бұрын
Rave Yoda Well, a big downside of having complex AI is performance. Yes, maybe you can make an Ai that flanks you, aims well, organizes with other AIs and stuff like that, but when you have 30,60 even 100 of those the performance goes to shit. The best AI systems are usually the most simple ones.
@RaveYoda7 жыл бұрын
BOT SWAT I know what you mean. Some performance boosters are possible though. A kind of clumping system that might control sets of bots than each being unique is one technique but then that kills complexity. Maybe that would be done on 1/2 or 2/3 of the bots. Idk, but I've thought about it a lot since Battlefront 2 is my favorite game probably of all time.

I like bots for many reasons. You can learn the basics without random chat abuse. Play when you want. Quit when you want, without having to feel like you're leaving people in the middle of a game. Pause the game at any time. Scalable difficulty. You said many of these, so I guess my point is that I agree with you. I used to play Unreal tournament a lot and made maps for it as well. Still wishing for a new fps game with bots and the posibility of adding custom maps. Anyways, thanks for another great video.

For real, every game DOES need bots. To me it's all about longevity. Having the game not became a sad bunch of empty maps once there's no more players online (if the game even allows you to get into empty maps at all). That right there is sad and a huge waste. There needs to always be something to do so the game doesn't cease to exist altogether. That's why we need bots, in my book. Mean Greens is a great example of a game that SORELY needs bots. It's been in my wishlist for a long time and the only reason I haven't bought it is that comments are always saying the game is dead. If it had bots, I'd buy it.

Bots are very important. Even Red Orchestra 2 felt better when the teams were half AI and half players. The AI added to some cannon fodder, general chaos and some truly unpredictable moments. When players refused to advance, the bots gave some good meatshield cover. In games like UT, they are good for training and just having a blast. Just installed the newer unreal tournament thats still in development and despite it being on hiatus, I had a blast. It felt so nostalgic and so new. Games with small, but dedicated playerbases also benefit greatly from bots. You can still find full matches in every unreal tournament for example, but its generally wiser to play against bots if you don't want to get 100% destroyed after a long break. Bots add to any game out there, they do not deduct from the experience in any way.

I refuse to play multiplayer only games. For example, the Battlefield franchise died for me after 2142 because of no bots. It was very dissapointing that the titan mode didn't work with bots, but I still liked it because of them. I didn't even bother to pirate the games that came after 2142, that's how little I cared about them. Yeah they have a campaign, they have the frostbite engine and cool graphics, so? Most of the replayability is in the skirmish maps. I actually played Battlefield 2142 online and had fun with it, but I absolutely hate the idea that at some point I will stop having a usable game because people don't play it anymore. I also love playing with bots and doing whatever I'd like with them. I still play Battlefield 2 because there are mods that let you play 64 player maps with as many bots as your PC can handle beyond the 64 normal limit

"...and i didn't enjoy it even if I did end up winning" THIS holy shit. Also it irks me how developers try to excuse not including bots over it being too "difficult" to develop when they have perfectly fine AI in campaign missions. Creating pathfinding for AI bots is easy. I used to do it for CS maps back in the day. They're just being lazy or think they have to throw hundreds of thousands of dollars at a team of programmers to do something one of them could pull off over a few weekends. It's just stupid and it's making me hate multiplayer games.
@Comand945 жыл бұрын
There's a difference between creating pathfinding for AI and creating AI, lol. That being said I think it's worth designing your game with AI in mind. They make all players feel a little bit more epic and they up the scale of a battle. For some shooters maybe it's not worth it, but for many it should be. It should be worth it for many games in general. This year DICE added bots to Battlefront 2 2017 and they are great. You can find them in Capital Supremacy, Co-Op and Instant Action. In casual games like this one everyone should be winning a little more than losing and that's why you add bots.

Bots maintain a game's value by making it immortal, while an online community eventually dies. Developers think that multiplayer should be a replacement to singleplayer. Imho, it should be an alternative. For example, I was a huge fan of Rainbow Six, until they ditched the strategic singleplayer experience with a lackluster and unrealistic lone wolf mode. I don't mind the multiplayer, and I gladly play it from time to time, I just want bots on my side too for a change of pace. Or in the case of Battlefield/Battlefront, they've ditched the replayability of skirmish matches with non-replayable (and forgettable) campaigns that are totally unfitting with the games' original concepts. Moral of the story, multiplayer gives you that adrenaline rush, good moments with friends and competitiveness, while singleplayer is mostly a more immersive, relaxing and customizable type of playing where you can do what you want based on your mood. Two totally different experiences, and games that have both (not just linear stories, also mp bots) are a complete package in my eyes. Btw, I wouldn't call BF1942 and Red Orchestra 2's bots "good", there are much better examples of bots that are smarter and pretty fun to play with: Unreal Tournament, Black Ops 2 (wish they'd work in all gamemodes), Day of Infamy, to name a few.

They weren't perfect (especially drivers) but still pretty fun to play with, just have to mod the game to get access to 64 maps, and AIX mod is also pretty great as an overhaul of content. You know what drives me nuts? AI commander was removed in version 1.5. They did the same in BF2142 in the same patch version. What were they thinking?!
@Yotrymp7 жыл бұрын
"[Developers] think that multiplayer should be a replacement to singleplayer" *publishers, directors, investors The development for bots must be paid for in any game's development. Bots are usually subpar too, so anyone leading game design probably completely overlooks them because of that reason, and how much time they'll take to even get above the intelligence of a leaf. Bot DLC could work in theory, but they probably won't seem worth the price to most people until they see what's behind making them work, and how they'll help to preserve the game.

Philips right, I played a lot of Red Orchestra and sometimes I’d join a server, go through a massive battle, just to look at the player list at the end and find it filled with bots. Now on Vietnam there’s many servers with 64/64, and then just 2/64. That’s it. SAVE THE BOTS

I think the "git gud" problem in multiplayer games is that it's a constant fight. It's like keeping your ELO high so you don't plummet, and you have to constantly fight... for what? To fight more to stay at a higher level to fight more to stay at a higher level? It's not even a vicious cycle, but a mindless grind. Compare it to games like Guitar Hero. Right now I'm playing the pc version Clone Hero on expert with "No Fail" on... simply because here IT HAS AN IMPACT. And also that some songs are expert-only. But yeah, compare "memorizing all the spray patterns and hidey spots" with "being able to tap notes even faster than two weeks ago". One is rewarding, the other's a chore. This is why bots are good. They let you play against a "good enuff" difficulty where you don't struggle and sweat and scream for NOTHING, and instead enjoy your time. Also, using your HOOMAN SUPERPOWERS to help your bot side win the endless bot stalemates (as seen in Battlefield 2) is amazing. It's not "fast reaction times" and "perfect weapon balance", it's tactics and coordination.

This is what I love about speedrunning btw. At least if you don't start worrying about leaderboards, then you're back into human conflict again... But calmly competing against yourself, at the challenge you decide, with whatever cheats or modes you want this time. It's a good feeling!

7:20 mate, I completely agree with you, I understand what it's like. I mostly play story driven, single player games (I still play a fair bit of multiplayer but not nearly as much as single) and part of the reason for that is because when I play a multiplayer game and things get heated, I don't like what i become, I get angry and explosive and I just turn into a jerk when I play too much multiplayer. It's nice to be able to play against a computer for once and it's (in my case) usually more fun at times. I agree with many points you make in this video, I love your content, keep it up

100% agree with everything you said here. I despise PVP games because people who play them competetively have convinced themselves that they are accomplishing something. They need this sense of accomplishment because they aren't having fun anymore, and without that they can't justifiably recognize the game for what it is: A game. People make excuses like "well some people make money in CPL" Yeah sure, but YOU aren't. I am done with PVP games. Bots are freaking great. Even if one prefers PvP, you can have the option to practice and explore the maps at your own pace, and you can always play whenever/however YOU like -- including the ability play your favorite map or game mode when a game is (inevitably) no longer the flavor of the month. (while some games do retain a small playerbase years after, I find mostly they are MLG tryhards who are know every exploit and tactic there is. You'll never be able to play as you could when it first came out) If the game is Offline, you will not be made 100% Dependent to someone else's servers somewhere. There's nothing wrong with options, especially options that benefit everyone.

You have a new subscriber, I just found this video, I recently told people how WW1 Tannenberg revitalized my love for multiplayer fps, I get the full experience, I can progress and unlock stuff while playing offline. That's one of my biggest pet peeves with games that DO have bots, when you can't get the full experience that online would give you with progress and unlocks. To me when games say online only, it feels that developers don't want to take the time and have passion for their games to last forever, instead its just a quick cash grab.

in multiplayer shooters, there should be more bots, even gamemodes where you play against and with bots. everyone wants to feel like the main character, and gamemodes dedicated to you fighting bots satisfy that want. Very good points you got, and, I couldn't agree more. When I started out playing games, online play was nothing but a wish and a myth to most, me included. Not to say I've never played an online game, I did my time in World of Warcraft and Runescape like I think anyone my age has. But the last game I really got into playing was the custom servers in Battlefield 3, on the metro map only. The only other games I play online sometimes is Minecraft, Space Engineers and a few racing games. It's not that I don't enjoy playing with friends, but I have so few friends, only 4 or 5 (one is a on and off again friend) and, if they are not working, they are dealing with their families. Being able to play a game I like should not be dependent on other people I feel. Bots have held a fair amount of games alive for me to this very day. Bots should be mandatory, no matter how good or bad they are!

It would be nice if someone set up an open source AI package that game developers could simply drop into their games. Rather than spend time implementing it, you would just have to make it fit. That way we would see more games with bot support, i think. Also, i personally think that PUBG would be way better with bot support. No cheaters, for starters.
@Jonok7 жыл бұрын
Bots are hard to program and most of the player would hate to play agaist it because they will be too easy to beat or they clearly cheat if programmers made a script. They became a niche for who want simply have fun. Popular games could not expose their code because it could possibly bring more cheats, but it could fix the problem with other almost dead game.
@tomaarten7 жыл бұрын
that sounds awesome but in reality would be a mess to add. Each game has different objectives, tactics, gameplay elements, mechanics and creating an AI that does everything very well for every game is near impossible. The amount of time trying to fit the AI would be too much for some developers, nevermind the fact that it would be an infuriating proces because of all the conflicting code. I do agree with bots for PUBG, but I feel like it would be hard to mimic real players. real players make mistakes, bots make mistakes on purpose. How do you let some bots die because of the circle? how much of a priority is getting kills and getting loot? how do you prevent bots from hardcore camping? how far can a bot see (as in, how many pixels does a player need to be in order to "see" him, being hidden in bushes or guilli suits are a major component in PUBG)?
@CristiNeagu7 жыл бұрын
_"Bots are hard to program and most of the player would hate to play agaist it"_ Which is why game developers don't really include them any longer. However, if they wouldn't have to spend resources to actually develop the AI, they would be more inclined to add them in. _"they clearly cheat if programmers made a script"_ I have never heard of any sort of bot in a shooter game that cheats. _"They became a niche for who want simply have fun."_ Considering games are in general for people who want to have fun, is that such a small niche? _"Popular games could not expose their code"_ No one said anything about exposing code. The developers would be plugging in the open source AI into their games, not each individual player. And that is not an issue, considering how many games are built on Unreal Engine, which has publicly available source code.
@CristiNeagu7 жыл бұрын
_"Each game has different objectives, tactics, gameplay elements, mechanics and creating an AI that does everything very well for every game is near impossible."_ Such an open source platform would have to implement the basic tools. Stuff like pathfinding, objective management, etc. You would just tell the AI engine what it sees and what it needs to do, and it would go do it. Yes, it's more technical than that, but it wouldn't have to go down to the level of individual game customisation. _"How do you let some bots die because of the circle? how much of a priority is getting kills and getting loot? how do you prevent bots from hardcore camping? how far can a bot see"_ Well, data mining. You could actually take those questions, record games with real humans (in parametric format, not video), and answer the questions. How often do real players get caught outside the field? How close does another player have to be for someone to stop running from the field and shoot instead?
@CristiNeagu7 жыл бұрын
_"expert css bots are basically aimbotting"_ I wouldn't consider that cheating. If you're that good that you can aim incredibly fast, you are acting inside the confines of the game. The other two examples... yeah, that could be considered cheating. Hey, i only said *I* never heard of it.

Real players tend to ruin the experience for me, if you get into a lobby with some good sports it's not a problem. But nowadays communities have become cesspools of people who're just insulting each other for no reason. I miss the days when bots were more common, they were a fun distraction and never complained or shouted profanity in your ear. The original Star Wars Battlefront 1 and 2 were defined by their huge bot filled battles and engagements, it helped make every match feel like a warzone. Now if you enter a nearly empty server in a multiplayer game, the server is just a barren wasteland with nothing to occupy it. I'm ashamed of the modern games industry and people who disregarded this feature and just hated on it for the sake of it. I miss bots. ;-;

Man, i hate when people hating bots in the game. Games like verdun or tannenberg needs them, yet there are still people complaining about it. If there are enough people to fill the servers, of course having bots would be annoying. But, damn, the population are already low as it is, and some still prefer a dead server rather than bots filled server, or maybe a server with a bunch of high pingers because their local servers are empty. Why some people think the game will manage to have full servers, when they could actually see the concurrent player? And who want to wait for hours in an empty server for it to be filled with people? Or maybe that's just because I'm from SEA area. Bots may never have the skill of high level players, but they could still give a glimpse of what could have been like with a full server.

Good point. This is a problem that stems from incomplete or biased data gathering. At some point, developers started listening to their fan-bases who told them that bots were either not good enough or pointless. They fail to see that this opinion is mostly held by hardcore gamers, who tend to be a minority. I would argue that most of the players don't care about learning maps, getting a better k/d ratio, or playing against genius bots. They also don't hang out in forums, Reddit or any other website developers use to contact their fan-bases that much. This creates a distorted view when gathering data from the fan bases. This is changing, since there are now other methods for data gathering in games. Hopefully, this will mean the return of bots :) Sorry for bad English.

Sadly I don't think bots are coming back for a couple reasons. First off it's money the company doesn't have to spend if they go multiplayer only. Second it's a rather hard thing to do, to program the AI to respond in a decent fashion in growingly complex games. Lastly lets face it no game company wants their games to last these days. They rather milk the hype train up till launch day and then move on. The only numbers they seem to care about are pre-orders these days. Players had to FIGHT hard just to get a lame 6 hour single player mode in games like Battle Front 2 or Battlefield One. The idea people want to play solo is so far against the business model of companies these days it's scary. Not only do you have micro transactions and cosmetic to think about but also split screen multiplayer is all but dead these days. If you want to play with your friends you all need a system, internet, and multiple copies of the game and any DLC it sells you. They bet on people encouraging their friends to play games they like with multiplayer games to much to ever go backwards.

If there was some bots to make it 8 or even 16 players would have been way more fun.thats prob why people like the og swbf2 I spent many a long hour replaying the campaigns on both the first and second and even more playing a friend or to. I the end your right it makes the game last so much longer but as u said people want you to buy the latest and greatest game so sadly bots will probably be dying even though they would be better than ever now. :(

You just single handedly convinced me to sneak bots into my game. I forgot the feeling of having massive bot battles with friends in mount and blade and absolutely how much fun we had in it. How many hours were wasted on Cod zombies as a teen. Bots are underrated and honestly a factor I missed when designing my game.

Say what you will about Call of Duty but I will commend them to no end for keeping bots and splitscreen gameplay alive.

I wish battlefield 1 included bots. It's such a good game but bots could improve it so much.

They actually were testing bots, but never finished them.

I've played a lot of UT'99 but only with bots as I had no internet access at home. When I came back to play the game 2 decades later, I was afraid to meet people who could be too good for me to enjoy the game.

The amount of MMOs I've played (online only) that would've made for funish single player experiences if they just added bots. Imagine if CODBO3 had story in it's big map with NPCs and missions aswell as it's battle royal mode. Perhaps an option to mix them together.

I love in CSS how bots speak to each other, I forget they are bots most of the time.

UT2004 is one of my favorite games still, and it wouldn't be anywhere near that without bots.

"Do you want to play with bots or with humans? Yes." This videos is me, period. One thing I love to see is when a community for a old game comes together to add 3rd party bots, even tho bots should be in any competitive game from the start. The main thing is that bots don't need to be super smart, peak of technology, Google's research AI, they just have to walk around, shoot every once in a while and maybe do a extra thing or two. #BringBackTheBots ❤

Bots are so nice, when you play CS:GO at 4AM at night and everybody is already sleeping.

I understand bot support must be quite difficult for indie devs, but it really is the thing that keeps an indie multiplayer game afloat, if it isn't an instant runaway success. So many games have flopped or slid quickly into obscurity because low player counts made them unplayable. And games like Ravenfield and Brass Brigade demonstrate that players aren't required for the formula to work.

Couldn't agree more. Even when I am being competitive, I still prefer practicing against bots instead, since I can relax without the looming pressure of being judged for my aim or weird strategies for the sake of improvement. Even in cooperative games, I still choose bots if I'm not playing with anyone that I know, since I don't have to risk being queued with bad teammates or spend too much time being conscious of my own performance rather than the fun of the game itself. I grew up with bots since I never had internet back then, and I was lucky to have a dad that owned and enjoyed computer games. Yet to this day, I still choose bots more often than not if I'd instead be queuing with people I didn't know.
