Hi everyone,
This episode starts at the beginning of the 2nd on the slip for my 34ft timber Hartley cruiser. I felt like we started to get some of the bigger jobs accomplished by the end of day 3 even though there is still a long way to go.
Feel free to send me an email of you want to get in touch.

I used to work on a wood boat a old 100 footer. Built in 1972 we battled the worms the Gulf of Mexico warm water and the wood worms just wrecked the wood over the years. She finally had the worm chew they a Plank and she sunk in the slip.

A mixture of glycol and rubbing alcohol into the timber at any rot/water ingress/wet areas will dry out the timber and kill any mould spores... The alcohol will bind to the moisture and cause it to flash off more quickly. The heat will no doubt help....

that's the way to go mate, be organized at put in hard twelve hour days. FYI once you have stripped right down and done the antifoul you will find only one coat and a second on the leading edges is sufficient. T supplier told me that was the correct procedure. Keep close control of your budget and check what the potential value of the boat will be after completing the rebuild. It's very easy to spend more on the rebuild of a kit boat, than what you can get for the boat should you have to sell it. Hartley boats were usually owner built many in the 1960's and many are unfortunately on their last legs, requiring an almost total rebuild for a boat that will only fetch a value equal to a 1960's kit boat in good Nick, but still a 1960's kit boat.
@HarpersShed
@HarpersShed Жыл бұрын
I am trying to manage the budget as best as possible. Doing the work myself seems to be helping to keep the costs down as I'm only paying for the parts and consumables and not labour. I am very fortunate to have acquired Kiarra after she has already had an extensive refit. The hull was rebuild around 5 years ago during a 2 year stint on the hard stand by the previous owner. The downside is when it came to the top side he tried to cut costs by using poor materials and paints.

Going well mate the timber at the bottom of your keel is called a worm shoe it is there to protect the keel of the boat if grounding ever happens there normaly copper sheet between the keel and the shoe in your case looks like fiberglass . Your through hull fittings service and greese the seacock wile out of the water if brass and looking pink replace them with new ones they will snap just like that then remove the scoops on the out side to clean out the groth and re antifoul this is somthing alot of people miss and can cause water flow problems eg engine cooling ect keep up the good work and keep your dream alive

Thanks mate. I did remove, clean and antifoul the strainer before I installed a new skin fitting. Both ball valves were actually replaced with brand new SS units. One of the slip operators was kind enough to actually give me the 2" ball valve for nothing.

You are killing it. Every boater knows the feeling of wanting to sit on the boat when they're on the hard. The work you're banging out in a couple of days is just incredible. I'd like to say it gets easier, but that's a lie, it never ends. The trick is to keep doing it so the amount of work you have to do between enjoyable trips and naps on the boat is less. Those Alpha bellows suck no matter how you do them, and knowing that I can say I would have done the gimbal bearing at the same time so I didn't have to do it again for ten or so years.
@HarpersShed
@HarpersShed Жыл бұрын
It was a big week that's for sure but I think it just highlighted the amount of work still left to go to get her back to good condition. I did contemplate replacing the bearing but it was honestly in new condition and I was running out of money lol. The bellows are a crap job but hopefully I don't have to do them again...... Well not on the Alpha one leg anyway.

Couple things. Is the keel being wood bothering you as much as me? Bellows the Achilles heel of in / out boards. Do you replace them from the inside? I'm not worried about the timber keel, the rest of the boat is glass over ply anyway and the keel is in good condition. I do agree the bellows are the one part of the system that I really don't like but if maintained they are fine. You replace them from the outside, I didn't do a very good job at showing the actual bellows but the go between the transom plate and the gimbal housing. Do you mean the pushrod length? I did end up using acetone, my can of brake clean was empty and I had it sitting there for when I start the fibreglass work.

Nice vid you are getting much better. Look at you editing your garbage. I still say sink it with your wallet saving’s everything you own. But that’s coming from an old duff with 2 boats. Keep it up mate. Washington state USA

I'm surprised that you didn't treat your outdrive with the same stuff you put on your propeller or at least treat it with anti-foul unless of course you did then ignore my comments.... lol ✌🤠🇺🇸

Hi mate, the prop speed was to expensive to do the whole leg but I did apply 2 coats of antifoul pain on the leg. That will probably be shown in next week's episode 👍

The complete outbound components look like they come from a scrapyard nasty mess should have been overhauled properly, blasted and then powder coated, I suppose you can mask the stern spray it all black and pretend it’s all ok like the engine

There is no pretending going on mate. All components were cleaned, inspected, reassembled then painted with the correct antifoul.

Possible but unlikely, both times it has happened we were cruising on 2900rpm-3000rpm and had been for some time. The maximum rated rpm of the 3ltr is 4500rpm and we were not even close to that. Now that doesn't take into account spring fatigue and it is possible they were just soft but again seems like a long shot.

DO NOT replace the spray strakes , you have a displacement hull , not a planing hull ,you will not get the existing screw holes to dry in time , so don't try . Drill out every hole with various sizes of forstner bits until sound and dry hull material is proven , fill every void with plugs and epoxy. Do the repairs properly or don't do them at all. Encapsulating ANY wet ,moist ,damp areas anywhere will lead to rot. the choice is yours. In future , plan for removal and reshaping the windows , at present they look like a hat full of arseholes a five year old kid could have drawn better, Fred Flintstone ugly abominations , take a look at Jim Youngs Designs of the "Vindex" launches , they are the epitome of sweet cabin shapes and window apertures , but all that is in the future. On your window trims , did I or did I not see staples set into the varnish window trim , Jesus Christ , if this is an indication of the quality of what bastard work has been done in the past ,you certainly need to dig deep and get to the source of potential problems rather than cosmetically cover shit up. You will NOT dry the deadwood in time , however , just patch it for now , when you eventually come out on the hardstand for engine and propulsion change, prop up the hull at the chine and all other strong points , remove the deadwood shoe in one piece , remove and replace anything wet , moist , damp , or soft , with Dutchmen (plugs and or patches ) replace the existing hard wood shoe, Simple? yes , Quick? yes . Any Compromise or bodgey job will come back and bite you on the arse , do it once , do it right.
I GOT A NEW PROJECT!!!!!!!, and it's all bad news.
