Roy Dean is like the Yoda of BJJ. Seems to love teaching and doesn't let his ego get in the way of their progression. A master if you will

No, it is Roy Harris that the Yoda. He can take Roy Dean but he let go and let his apprentice improve more and more. you can see it a lot of time that Harris have a time to submit Roy Dean but he let go.

I love to see instructor make their black belts look like purple belts. That's old school . Just shows you how deep the water gets. Cool thing is Rickson Gracie could do that to Roy Dean and Roy Harris and the cool thing is all of them are legit black belts!

I couldn't help noticing the sincerity of Roy's bow to his students at the end of his test. That is martial arts spirit! The belts mean little, the dedication to each other means everything.

2 months out from blue belt, and seeing this makes me feel like I'm an eternity from black. Oh well, I used to feel like I was an eternity from blue. Great video. This is a perfect example of smooth, fluid and consist technique. And some great examples of chaining. Just beautiful...

That had to been the most beautiful display of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ive ever seen in my life. Nothing could have been more nerve-racking than to perform under max resistance. Sensei Dean upheld the true essence of Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu through technique, leverage, and a calm mind.

Awesome as usual. That looked tough. When your opponents are instructed to only focus on one thing (i.e. don't let you escape, hold on to a technique/hold for as long as they can, etc.) it is extremely challenging. Especially when your opponents know what they are doing. Basically, he demonstrated the techniques under continuous, maximum resistance. Much like a real fight - only in this fight, you receive a fresh opponent every few minutes and the fight goes on and on and on...

It depends a lot on your availability to train, also. Some people have lots of money and/or time and can dive in and train all day every day. BJ Penn, for example, has big family money, so when he started training bjj he did it all day every day, and got his black belt in 2-3 years. When you see those time frames, you have to take into account if a person is training two hours a week or 4 hours a day. There are certainly both kinds. :)

I learn from his videos. It is an art and enjoyable as well as educational to watch his videos. Having a Yoga background, I cant help but wonder how common Yoga is in the BJJ community, so many of their transitions appear to be a Yoga move. Thanks for creating a useful series. Namaste'

That was intense. The last battle, between the two blackbelts, I could tell at points the guy taking the test just wanted it to end, he wanted the madness to end. And there were a few points where the master could have absolutely crushed him with a submission, but instead he took the worse path and HELD HIM THERE, forcing the student to work out of it, instead of ending it quickly with a submission. That's where true grapplers are born. Thumbs up to the max.

Sysifos, a friend of mine I hadn't seen in a while told me he took up BJJ and of course the black belt question is gonna come up and he told me it takes that long, but I never asked him why it took 5 years. I wasn't sure if it was because there are a lot of techniques involved to learn and that's why it takes along time to learn or if that was just sort of the time limit that all BJJ association's set for it....I don't know Caio Terra and I just came across Prof. Dean's site....

It all depends on your skill level, and the requirements of your instructors. It took me 2 years to get my blue belt. I don't see how it's physically possible to receive your black belt within a year... A year of BJJ training (for most people) you are still at a white belt level. The fastest I've ever heard of someone progressing was my instructor going from white to purple in a year and a half But he was already a black belt in Judo. (he's now bjj black belt, but took him a total of 8 yrs)...
