2nd GEN DODGE DIFFERENCES (gas vs. diesel) This video runs down some of the differences between a 2nd gen dodge 2500 6.9 magnum gas engine vs. a 2nd gen dodge 2500 24 valve cummins. The 5.9 magnum gas engine vs. 5.9 24 valve cummins diesel engine obviously are quite difference in size and the way they both perform. Aside from the main difference between the dodge ram 2500 gas vs diesel, I cover the difference between steering setups. The dodge 2500 5.9 magnum gasser has the T steering setup on and the 01 dodge 2500 24 valve cummins has the Y steering setup. T steering vs Y steering is a difference between the years of the truck and not because one is a gas vs. diesel. The earlier model truck had heavy duty steering which got changed later on. You can do a 2nd gen dodge steering upgrade to the t steering if you have y steering. Check out my video on T steering vs. Y steering. The 2nd gen 5.9 gasser also has the dodge tow package on it. With the dodge tow package the truck comes with a rear sway bar stabilizer and also has a storage compartment under the rear seat. My 2nd gen 24 valve cummins does not have the dodge tow package so there is no rear sway bar stabilizer or storage under the rear seat. That is a difference in packages that were offered on these 2nd gen dodge 2500 trucks (to my knowledge) and has nothing to do with them being gas vs diesel. I'd love to hear other differences between the 2nd gen dodge 2500 gas vs diesel trucks that I didn't cover in this video. If you guys have more differences then be sure to share them in the comment section! It's cool to see how two trucks are the same but yet so different in the options that they come with.

The 5.9 magnum is a solid runner cheap to work on but she is thirsty and a little gutless. The 5.9 Cummins is a strong motor good mpg reliable as well tows like nothing else, but miss a fuel filter change and you are down $1800 for injectors super pricey to work on. Doesn’t like driving in town. Have lots to worry about exhaust temp, engine temp training etc. So it’s really up to you if you are going to haul every day or at least every weekend get a diesel and keep up on the maintenance, if you are going to tow a small trailer or even something a little bigger every once in awhile get the magnum

Great video man! I love seeing those second gen rams! I got A 1998 ram 1500 with the 5.9 magnum (only 87,000 miles) and the best mpg I’ve ever gotten is 16/17 on the highway goin about 60mph with 3.55 gears. Not too bad in my opinion. Keep up the good work man!

Love my 2nd gen 5.9 Magnum. However what baffles me is my truck has the tow package, so rear sway bar, storage unit under rear seat, BUT factory 3.55 gears. You’d think a tow package would warrant 4.10 gears over 3.55s?? Great video, keep up the good work.

I have a 99 slt laramie with the magnum and tow package but it came with 4.10 gears. Might just be that one of our two trucks was special ordered with different gears from standard with that package

@niftertube yeah I probably put 20k into just to try and keep it running. Got the dredded block so have to swap the engine and 2 transmissions. Rear diff. It killed me and the fact that it is common. Then I purchased a lower km 07 f150 that also had nothing but common problems so now I'm saving for a Toyota truck and or 4runner. Going to do it right for the 3 time around.

I have the storage compartment under my back seats but dont have the tow package. It's a 99 dodge ram 2500 5.9 gas the people that had it before I bought it had it in there so not sure if they bought it or someone else before them or it came from the factory with it but I love it.

Moving the distributor only changes the injector sync, it doesn't affect the ignition timing, timing is based off the crank position sensor which is not adjustable.

The v10 8.0 is the upgraded option offered in the 2500 series. Thats what compares to the diesel. The Magnum is not.

I have a 98 v10 2500. The radiator is bigger in the v10 than the diesel, also the cummins and the v10 share the 47re heavy duty automatic, the 5.9 will only bolt up to the 46re standard duty automatic. The 5.9 truck comes with a dana 60 and the v10 is only dana 70 and cummins is optional dana 60 or 70

Manual trans v10 and diesels have a dana 80 rear. Autos are dana 70. Nv4500 behind both. V10, nv4500, dana 80 combo is a huge improvement over 5.9 magnum, 46re, dana 60.

Hmmm, I'm not sure man. I thought the rear sway bar and rear storage was part of the towing package back in the day. I think I saw that some place. I could be wrong though and it may be an option they put on a mixture of trucks or that guys ordered for their trucks when buying them new back then. Something to look Into again.

My 99 2500 gasser also is the HD option with tow package and is a lifted 4x4 on 35s and has no rear sway bar. I think it was just a option if you wanted it.

if ur just gettin into diesels, u dont want a dodge.. im not trukcist i dont give a shit what the badge says, i own at least one of all them, n a few GM's theyre Fn bulletproof gas or diesel.. but the dodges can b a little picky with dumb shit like the electronics, the weak transmissions, sub grade steel, u just say the word rust or salt around it rust, theyre genuinely horrible for rust both in design, in that theirs a LOT of debris n water traps, n layered metal, and also horrible metal quality, i dont park my truck in a salt mine, yet i was chipping at Least 1/2 solid chunks of steel off my diff the other day..its pathetic.. none of my other trucks have ever done that, u see that on truck that have sat in the junkyard for 50 years.. gettin a dodge first would b like goin from never bein in a relationship to jumpin right in with a hardcore loudmouthed extremely difficult untrustworthy chick lol things Might b ok... but chances r ur goin to have to deal with dumb shit u shouldnt :p

I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 HD 5.9L GAS ENGINE QUAD CAB WITH A 8FT BED THE TRUCK IS ALL ORIGINAL FROM FACTORY. I was wondering if you can share with me as to what type of transmission this truck may have. The issues I currently having 1. I have a check engine light but not getting any fault codes. 2. I hear a crackling noise in the area of the front of the transmission and the rear of the engine. This noise is only heard when vehicle is in park or netural. 3. I do not have any power to dome lights or radio. All fuses check good on both sides I am David. You help would be appreciated

How about the suspension the coil springs in the front of the gas is going to be a lighter duty then the diesel because the diesel weighs quite a bit by itself that's just a little food for thought

If it were a v10 gasser it would have the same suspension as the diesel. The v8 gasser is lighter duty than v10 and diesel. Its kind of like a light duty 2500 vs 2500HD comparison, v10 and diesel typically the HD. A v10, nv4500, dana 80 truck has a 8,800lb gvw, definitely heavier than a 5.9 v8, auto, dana 60 setup. Manual transmission behind the v10 and diesel meant dana 80 rear, autos had dana 70 rear. V8 gasser had dana 60 rear unless it had a special option to get a dana 70 as a snowplow prep or 3500 dually.

The gas truck wasnt mine. It was already in rough shape when my buddy purchased it. It was just a work truck that we didnt have to worry about if it got a dent or scratch. Ran like a swiss watch though!
