First of all I would like to thank you for the content you provide us with. As I was watching your video it occurred to me that maybe the reason some of the inner screens have cracked is from people putting pressure on it to make it lay flat. I use my inner screen on a daily basis but it doesn't bother me that it doesn't open completely flat. This is just something to think about. Keep up the great work.

Just sold my Z Fold 4 in Mint condition 256gb for 500gb with case and charger. Due to the fact that I can afford the phone now, but I can't afford the headaches down the road and honestly the surcharge of random things because "it's a fold". Now on a S24+ and im loving life again! Super solid phone, long battery, great camera, and I never worr about the crease! Googles phone had my hopes up until your video and I looked into it and you're definitely not the first one 🙃 unfortunate.

My Samsung fold 4 is like new still after 2yrs. I wouldn't use one without a case and i've dropped mine a few times. The only thing that happened was the stock screen saver bubbled on me after a year. I pulled it off and my phone is looking almost new after 2 years. Technical issues can happen or lemons on any type of phone. I'll never buy anything but folding phones going forward, love it.

Shane, at least in my case, you are absolutely innocent 😊 I started to buy almost every foldable device available on the Czech market and even from a grey market when it was not officially imported and I have experienced damages, but so far, not beyond the standard "bad luck" coming with any of electronic devices on the market... I do not rely on warranty at all, I try to claim if possible but not make decisions based on warranty... Please go on with the foldables👍

Well really neither should they have problems bud , by the sounds of it you don't keep them too long before buying a new one. I mean , keeping a phone for a year is not really a test of longevity imo . I reach over to my shelf next to the bed and type in Galaxy S8+ release date on my galaxy S8+ , that still is in pristine order , and never had a repair or even a battery , and according to google it was released in April 2017 now 7 years old , and although I don’t use it much these days , when it was my primary phone I absolutely used hell out of it , and back then as luck would have it , my PC died about the time the S8 was released , so I thought I would try dex on my S8+ as my home computer which I did for 1.5 years as well as it being my daily carry around , now that is longevity in a phone , I keep all my old phones , even my 2012 Galaxy note 2 was still working up until about 2 years ago , when it finally died , unlike my other old phones my old note 2 did have significant burn in on the display . I have had a bunch of other phones , I only ever broke one , that was my Galaxy note 4 , it was about 3.5 years old and it came out of the phone holder and cart wheeled down the road for about 30 or 40 feet while I was on my bike , it died not long after , but it had taken 3.5 years of abuse and the last hard drop finally killed it . That is still a fair service life to me . Still have my nexus 6p , battery is dead , but other than that in pristine order , galaxy note 9 I still use for the S pen for jotting down designs and ideas and the occasional Yt video , 2018 vintage , it also is still in pristine order and runs like a beauty.. I understand people making allowances with the likely shorter life of the folds due to the extra utility of the big inner screen , but if you are a hard case for long life devices , folds are a hard sell imo.

Shane, I am still waiting to hear back from google, in the middle of the screen where the crease is there was a little bump under the screen. Very small but never cause any issue so I never paid attention to it. 4 months later that bump caused a damage to the screen and google said that it is not covered. Even though the damage is coming from the inside of the screen. So frustrated. Thanks for talking about this.

With foldables, I have always purchased them direct from the manufacturer and paid the monthly extended warranty for them to include accidental damages as well mainly because I simply don't trust the manufacturer's to repair these devices with a standard warranty. So far, only had an issue with a Z-Fold 3 screen that went bad withing the second week and Sammy paid for is via UBreak I-Fix. At the moment though, I am back with a slab phone. I appreciate the Member's stuff, keep up the good work!

My opinion is if they can’t help you with a basic warranty repair on a 1800 phone then you shouldn’t recommend the product because the company wont back their products. You shouldn’t need to buy additional insurance for a basic warranty fail.

I absolutely agree that you shouldn't need to do this. That being said, I don't recommend products to anyone. The most I'll do is describe what sort of person might be interested in a product. Typically, all I do is evaluate and explain. I go out of my way to not tell people what to buy. In this instance, all I'm saying is that if you're going to get one, you'd better get insurance.

I was aware from the beginning about the risks of the inner screen might crack and this was why I was considering a Samsung because of their promise of a free screen change, but I really don't like Samsung and I don't like their fold, since I want a normal outer screen for normal day use. I still wanted a foldable phones since those were the only ones that peaked my interest since all the other phones were basically the same with different quality of cameras and UI. Google Pixel Fold wasn't released in Sweden plus it's their first foldable with everything that entails, so I wanted to wait a few generations before I bought a foldable from Google, but my next phone will probably be from them. Oneplus Fold was based of Honor fold, so I was hopefull they had learnt some things from their sister company, so I bought one and luckily I have no cracks or whatever on it, I have a case on it since I have slippery fingers, the screen protector on the outside screen got removed by me having a case on it, so I will have to buy a new one, but I'm hopeful it'll last me a few more years. But like I said, I'm well aware of the risks, even the fact that if something goes wrong, I can't go to the store and send it to be repaired here, but I still wanted one and bought Steve. I have no regrets whatsoever right now, 6 months later. I just wish there were more cases for it :P

This is precisely why I pay monthly for Geeksquad insurance for my OnePlus Open, but the same could be applied to any phone insurance plan. I'm actually on my 2nd OPO but it was completely my fault, I dropped a somewhat hefty piece of metal directly onto the inner display by accident. I took it to my local Best Buy and it was shortly after it released so they didn't have the parts on-hand, so they simply had me reset my phone and collected it and gave me a Best Buy gift card for the full balance I paid for the phone. I ordered another one that day and had a replacement phone in 2 days, and all for no deductible. So yeah I'd say it's a must. If you're already willing to shell out $1700+ for a foldable phone, it's in your best interest to pay an extra $10-15 a month (or the flat yearly fee) to keep your device, that you know is inherently a bit more fragile and prone to defects than regular smartphones, covered.

With Surface Duo there were also defective parts aka usb port. no matter how careful you were, it would break at some random point. Rocking Fold 3 for 2 years now, dropped it multiple times (without a case), never an issue, a few light scratches but nothing serious. This gives me confidence that I don't have to "specially" handle it because it is foldable. I use it as any other phone it is actually more tanky than other phones that break the entire back glass on a single drop.

it's a numbers game. with a few caviats. manufacturers quality build, iteration, research and the market size the manufacturer is targeting. eg. china, Asia and India..is the target for vivo & Xiaomi.. they'll probably sell more than google in US, i think volume and quality and trying to attract market share for premium phones will have a direct effect on what you get in your hand. Chinese social media can ravage a manufacturer. Whereas Google has a wider market of items, not just phones. it would be interesting to compare sales numbers of large foldable phones from Google, Samsung, and Chinese manufacturers. 👍

Im sorry to hear about what happened to your Pixel Fold, that must have been EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING. For me I've had a good history with Foldables that I have owened so far: Samsung Fold 3, Surface Duo 2, OPPO Find N2, Pixel Fold, and now a Honor Magic V2 & Vivo X Fold 3 Pro. So out of all these the only issue I have had is with the Duo 2, which after purchasing the left screen stopped responding to touches after a few months. Of course if you buy a foldable, I would assume that the chances of it breaking/malfunctioning are higher than that of a normal candy bar phone. Like you said maybe its better to purchase insurance/extended care on your devices just to be safe. 📱📱🤳🤳♥️♥️♥️♥️

Not meaning to be disagreeable ….. but I must , I must 😀, with respect , I think people that buy fold phones which are generally very expensive might be the type of consumer that replaces their phones for the newer bleeding edge tech much more often than the average moms and dads slab phone buyer , and reading through quite a few of the comment s , more often than not , it would appear fold buyers tend to update much quicker than the average slab phone buyer , so statistics on their robustness and longevity might still be difficult to get a real number . I’m happy to be proven wrong though.

My Pixel Fold and One Plus Open have both had the inner screen crack just opening the device. Also no damage sustained, kept in a case and well looked after. I actually couldn't fault Google (in UK at least) as they sent me a new device with minimal fuss and I returned my broken one after transferring my data to the new one. OnePlus want to examine the device first to decide whether it is covered under warranty or I have to pay for repair which is a less comfortable experience.

I work at a prison, and we take up inmate's phones when they get checked in. Trust me when I say almost every single phone we take has cracks all over it. You may think I'm exaggerating, but no. It's literally 9 out of 10. And none of them are folding phones. The vast majority of the time, it's user error. Not always, but the vast majority. Most of the inmates admit that they don't take care of their phones or threw them out of anger. I've personally never had a cracked screen on a slab phone. And that's been like what, 12 plus years now. I know I'm not referring to foldables here. I'm just making a point that the phones that are supposed to be more durable I see cracked up all the time. More often than not, it's the user.

Absolutely. One drop on concrete with no case, and the phone is now riddled with cracks. I have no clue why people don't buy a case and screen protector. It's nuts. There was a girl who had an iPhone 14 Pro, dropped and cracked it, and then could only sell it for $300. I know with certain Chinese manufacturers, they actually include both a case and screen protector, which is fantastic. I think every smartphone should come with a clear case and screen protector.

I took it to a repair shop as I had Samsung Care and the employee told me that it was actually the inner "screen protector" separating and to pretty much plan on my foldable having a critical issue about once a year as that was standard for the customers he sees. He said it was so common Samsung offers one free screen replacement with every Z Fold, but they don't advertise that of course. Insurance is necessary, Samsung gave me a new phone but if i had to do this once a year I would probably save $600 and get a brick phone. Spoiler I got a Pixel 8 and I hate it

As I see it, the Pixel has a better failure rate than the Z4. The Open has a worse failure rate than all of them, but I don't think the pixel and Open sold 50k combined. Also, both phones aren't even a year old so we're still judging this within a certain time frame and we can't compare them to prior generation(s) like we can with the Z. What will happen beyond a year is anybody's guess. BTW, Samsung is offering Samsung Care+ for anyone with a Z5 or S24 until June 30.

Google service is nightmare fuel. The stupid thing is, I'm still attracted to Pixel's - it's like an abusive relationship.

Rather than defects there is an inherent risk of breaking anything that is flexed over and over. Regardless of the durability of the rest of the phone. Especially when it flexes as much as these phones are expected to do and when it's not a material that is especially resilient to that level of stress. Get the insurance.

These devices are tested to 200,000+ folds when one fails well before that mark that's a defective phone.

If you fold something enough times it will break. It is that reason why I don't trust a folding screen not to break. I'll stick with dual screen phones for now.

But, it's supposed to be more than 200,000 times lol. If they test it to survive that and it doesn't, I'm calling that defective.

@@Maxx134a I don't care for the Galaxy Fold because it's too tall and narrow when folded and not wide enough when it's open. The pixel fold has a similar aspect ratio as the Duo but I think it's a bit smaller than the Duo.

truly folding devices the way that they are currently making is never going to work. similar to the Microsoft duo is what they will have to create in order for that to work.

I have a samsung care. Their customer service is just trash. Call the samsung care told me it was a warranty repair... call samsung O_o. Call Samsung claim line they divert me to samsung care. Just a horrible experience. If ur samsung u should service my device regardless if it is an insurance claim or warranty claim

what if folding is a doomsday clock that starts ticking so that you need to replace your device during a year when you’d planned to skip phone upgrades. what if folding is a criminally ill intent being hyped by brand evangelists and their friends. ‘mobile phones are boring now!’ oh my god, is reliability lame now? is durability cringe?

If you're implying that folding phones break intentionally to force users to buy another one, that would be a really bad tactic for OEMs to implement. It's much easier to just release new shiny toys with new features you won't get and if you do that, you inject far less ill will towards the brand. It can be justified. People won't keep buying a phone that physically fails for very long. You won't get the repeat customer that this hinges on.

Never buy OnePlus Open from OnePlus website. Always buy from a third party like Amazon or Best Buy(If in US). The reason is because the warranty services and customer support for OnePlus is in India. So as helpful as they are, the whole company is just trash. OnePlus service reps are great. The company and the services are bad.

I get why my story would sour people on Google, but as I've said several times, don't let this convince you that Google is in some way special. Samsung and OnePlus are doing the exact same things to people. You'll see many such stories in my comment section alone. No matter who you go with, don't trust the warranty.
