She dressed like an old lady and her wardrobe alone ruined it for me. But Donna KILLED it when it came to that wardrobe compared to Barbara. Donna LOOKED like a Ewing. She LOOKED like she belonged, with the clothing and jewelry she wore. And when someone can LOOK the part, then the rest can usually fall into place a little better. Jim Davis left his mark during the first three years he was on "Dallas". No one can deny that. Strong willed, smart, protective, stubborn and proud, Jock Ewing was THE patriarch of the show. His death left a void that was never completely filled. To his credit, Howard Keel was a solid choice to step into the show as the older male figure to anchor the series. Clayton Farlow was similar to Jock in a number of ways but was more even tempered and measured when dealing with others. It's easy to see why Miss Ellie was drawn to him. Both her husbands were hard working, successful men who commanded the respect of those around them.

One Mistake in the Script , where JR says "Daddy built this House", the way the story goes , you would have to watch the movie on You Tube called Dallas the early years about Old Jock and Digger and Miss Ellie's history. The South Fork Ranch was owned and Operated by Ellie's Father Aaron South Worth. Ellie was Diggers girl. Jock and Digger met out Wild catting and Digger brought Jock home to Dallas with him and introduced Jock to Ellie, she fell in love with Jock. So the Feud Began.

When Jock married Ellie he saved the ranch from foreclosure and built the current larger house where the original home stood and that was the house the family he and Ellie built lived in so yes Jock built that house.

In many ways, Howard Keel and Jim Davis reminded me, of fraternal twin brothers. I say that, because Clayton reminded me of Jock. I loved it, he and Miss Ellie got married. Southfork was both Miss Ellie's and Jock's home. However, it was originally a Southworth home, therefore it was Miss Ellie's birthright.

Bobby’s always willing to give away and give in! JR is the only son that kept Jock Ewing’s memory alive and relevant. In later years when Miss Ellie gives half of Southfork Clayton, Bobby didn’t fight against that decision the way JR did. JR reminded His Mother, who saved the ranch from the sheriff foreclosing. Never understood why the writers always made us think that Bobby was Jock’s favorite. JR was the only one that built Ewing Oil into more of a power after Jock retired. JR once told Sue Ellen that everything that he does, he does for his Daddy and that basically to JR, Ewing oil was his Daddy’s legacy.

Many folks felt Donna porrtayed Ellie Ewing more accurately. Think about what a lady worth so many millions of dollars would dress like. Bel Gedes as much as i like her always looked like a jeans and t shirt matriarch. Southfork was more than just the ranch. It was land. Miss Ellie should have built a second ranch on the land. Called it farlow ranch .. that way Clayton had his own home and Ellie had 2 ranch's on southfork

Jim Davis and Donna Reed definitely knew each other Jim Davis guest starred on The Donna Reed show in 1962. He played an old buddy of Donna's husband Donna's character didn't care for Jim Davis' character very much as he was a bit of a male chauvinist. Jim Davis guest starred on The Lucy Show he played a casino owner when Lucy ( Lucille Ball) and Vivian Vance visited Las Vegas.

The show was never quite the same after Jim Davis died. The Jock character grounded the show. After Jim Davis and the Jock character died, the show became more and more outlandish and over the top.

It is so sad Barbara Bel Geddes didn't portray Miss Ellie at that time. Donna Reed's Miss Ellie is fancy housewife, offering coffee... There is no power within her portrayal of Miss Ellie. On the other hand, Barbara Bel Geddes made the role live. Her portrayal of the matriarch of Ewing family is second to none.

If you ever have a chance to tour the Southfork Ranch, you will see that it's just an average-sized house, not nearly large enough for JR/Sue Ellen, Bobby/Pamela, Ellie/Clayton, Lucy, Christopher, John Ross and assorted help to live there comfortably. I think the garage is only a 2 stall.

Donna Reed got such a bum rap on Dallas, First, it was NOT her choice to drop Barbara Bel Geddes from the role, Lorimar made that choice. Donna did take the role in a new direction and if Barbara had not come back Donna probably would have remained until her own death a short time later. Then they should have just written Mama off the show and concentrated on the younger members of the family. Donna had such grace and was such a wonderful person in real life, Hagman was such a nasty drunk in real life he made life hell for everyone on that set. Donna didn't deserve that treatment after all of the quality entertainment she gave to this country during her lifetime.

Larry did like his alcohol, but life wasn’t hell on that set. If you’ve seen the outtakes and interviews with the cast, they had a blast and loved and respected each other. Donna did her best, but Barbara saw the show through its glory years and was the matriarch on and off the set. Donna was really set up to fail from day one.
