I’m sorry guys...but I LOVED Donna Reed as Miss Ellie. She was just a better match for the show than Barbara. I never liked Barbara as Miss Ellie. She just never fit the part. She dressed like an old lady and her wardrobe alone ruined it for me. But Donna KILLED it when it came to that wardrobe compared to Barbara. Donna LOOKED like a Ewing. She LOOKED like she belonged, with the clothing and jewelry she wore. And when someone can LOOK the part, then the rest can usually fall into place a little better. I’m not saying she’s a better actress than Barbara. I’m just saying appearance-wise, she looked more believable.

Except Miss Ellie wasn't supposed to "look like a Ewing". She wasn't a Ewing. She was a Southworth, a farm girl who grew up on a ranch during the Depression riding horses and castrating steers. Donna Reed doesn't look as though she's ever touched a horse or a cow in her whole life. She just paraded around in fancy clothes as though her dad was the president of the bank instead of a farmer.

Jim Davis left his mark during the first three years he was on "Dallas". No one can deny that. Strong willed, smart, protective, stubborn and proud, Jock Ewing was THE patriarch of the show. His death left a void that was never completely filled. To his credit, Howard Keel was a solid choice to step into the show as the older male figure to anchor the series. Clayton Farlow was similar to Jock in a number of ways but was more even tempered and measured when dealing with others. It's easy to see why Miss Ellie was drawn to him. Both her husbands were hard working, successful men who commanded the respect of those around them.

@@gregwatson8219 - Ben Cartwright was a widowed man (three times over) during the run of "Bonanza". He remained single throughout the shows fourteen years on the air. So to compare him to either Jock Ewing or Clayton Farrow is odd. I'm talking about Miss Ellie and what qualities she sought in a husband. Both the men she married were successful, strong, smart men who commanded the respect of those around them. In this regard all three men have similar attributes. One Mistake in the Script , where JR says "Daddy built this House", the way the story goes , you would have to watch the movie on You Tube called Dallas the early years about Old Jock and Digger and Miss Ellie's history. The South Fork Ranch was owned and Operated by Ellie's Father Aaron South Worth. Ellie was Diggers girl. Jock and Digger met out Wild catting and Digger brought Jock home to Dallas with him and introduced Jock to Ellie, she fell in love with Jock. So the Feud Began.

When Garrison Southworth Ellie's brother revealed he was alive but had come home to die in Season 2. He sent Ellie a portrait he painted before arriving only Ellie and Jock knew what the portrait was of and it was the house at Southfork. Why did they only recognize the family home? Because the Southworth house was a smaller building. When Jock married Ellie he saved the ranch from foreclosure and built the current larger house where the original home stood and that was the house the family he and Ellie built lived in so yes Jock built that house.

In many ways, Howard Keel and Jim Davis reminded me, of fraternal twin brothers. I say that, because Clayton reminded me of Jock. I loved it, he and Miss Ellie got married. Yet, I thought it was right, to move Jock's portrait, to Ewing Oil offices. Comparing Jock, to Clayton and vice versa, wasn't fair to either man. Jock was gone and Clayton rightly married Miss Ellie, because they loved each other. Fraternal twin likeness or not, Clayton was his own man.

Larry Hagman cleverly orchestrated this mini-storyline with the intent of further eroding Donna Reed’s standing among Dallas viewers. He was not a supporter of Ms. Reed fulfilling the role of Ms. Ellie, and he was laying the groundwork for the return of Barbara Bel Geddes. Mr. Hagman shared certain tactical qualities with the legendary character he created and so brilliantly portrayed.

I remember watching this episode as a kid. Miss Ellie and Bobby were right. However, it would have been better if Miss Ellie (Barbara Bel Geddes) would have been the one to take Jocks portrait down. This was a great and emotional scene. I do have empathy for JR here but, we do have to move on with life at some point.

@dawnyzaguirre8851 Hello......Yes it's true that Miss Ellie inherited Southfork from her father, but it was widely known that Miss Ellie's father had almost lossed Southfork during the Depression of the 1930s..... Then Jock came along with his enormous financial wealth and he saved Southfork from getting auctioned off. Since Jock's hard-earned money saved the ranch, to a major extent that alone caused him to become the new owner of Southfork. That was Jock's hard-earned money that maintained & kept Southfork upgraded, and he raised his family at Southfork throughout the 45 years he lived there. So yes indeed.....Southfork Ranch was Jock Ewing's home!

Bobby’s always willing to give away and give in! JR is the only son that kept Jock Ewing’s memory alive and relevant. In later years when Miss Ellie gives half of Southfork Clayton, Bobby didn’t fight against that decision the way JR did. JR reminded His Mother, who saved the ranch from the sheriff foreclosing. Never understood why the writers always made us think that Bobby was Jock’s favorite. JR was the only one that built Ewing Oil into more of a power after Jock retired. JR once told Sue Ellen that everything that he does, he does for his Daddy and that basically to JR, Ewing oil was his Daddy’s legacy.

Donna Reed got such a bum rap on Dallas, First, it was NOT her choice to drop Barbara Bel Geddes from the role, Lorimar made that choice. Donna did take the role in a new direction and if Barbara had not come back Donna probably would have remained until her own death a short time later. Then they should have just written Mama off the show and concentrated on the younger members of the family. Donna had such grace and was such a wonderful person in real life, Hagman was such a nasty drunk in real life he made life hell for everyone on that set. Donna didn't deserve that treatment after all of the quality entertainment she gave to this country during her lifetime.
