Fun story, actually: the reason why it's only a tribute, and not the actual song, is because, they wrote an amazing song. They were jamming and really feeling themselves. But they were high, and forgot to press "record." They tried again, but it was just gone. So, they made a tribute for it, instead.

@@mittens71199You're right. There is never just 1 meaning or inspiration behind a song unless you're a bad writer. Lol. A good writer can make a song open to multiple interpretations and will take inspiration from many sources. Both are valid as inspiration. It's also a great teaser for the movie and helped inspire the script.

In the early 90's there was an international vote held by radio stations in several countries for the title 'Greatest song in the world' and the winner was Stairway to heaven by Led Zeppelin. This song is a tribute to 'Stairway' and you can hear parts of it incorporated in this song as a tribute. :)

I just stumbled upon your channel and I have no regrets. I would absolutely love to see you two react to Alestorm - Drink. It's a pretty fun song. They term their genre as pirate metal. Alternatively, Psychostick - Obey the Beard, is another fun one. They are just a pretty solid comedy metal band. I fricken love you ladies. You remind me of my own gram. She was musically talented and wicked progressive when she was young. She was a white girl playing sax in a racially mixed band in the 1940s and 50s. Was beaten and incarcerated for having black friends. One of the bands was the International sweethearts of Rhythm. She was tough as bootnails, and loved good music. I'll always remember the smile on her face when I introduced her to N.W.A.

There is too many conflicting arguments here and based on the lyrics to tribute i'd be inclined to believe that they were in fact referring to when they beat the devil in a rock off in PoD. The lyrics explicitly describe the scenario. And there are interviews about the song with Jack Black basically confirming that theory without explicitly saying so. The "Stairway to Heaven" reference is close given the HBO series did sample the first few chords intentionally and made the song sound similar but even Black confirms the inspiration for "the best song in the world" came from Metallica's "One". However, inspiration for the song and what they are actually referencing in Tribute is the PoD Rock Off scene.
