I think the problem is that right after Cell arc, Gohan never took training as a priority, as he never liked fighting. In fact, right up until the middle of the Future Trunks arc of Super did he realize he cannot just slack off cause danger will follow the world regardless where Goku is there or not. Honestly, Super did go on the Goku/Vegeta show train for around the first 3 arcs but right after that, the others finally got some proper character growth, except Tien. Cause Toei hates Tien

Gohan having the nightmare about Cell is easily explained: What's basically happening is that Gohan is having a nightmare about Cell, and he is likely actually seeing how he pictures cell, but because that would be a) confusing for us, b) more work for Toriyama, we, with our viewer-o-vision see the cell we know. We're not actually seeing Gohan's nightmare, we're seeing the visual equivalent of a transcript.

Gohan’s my favorite character, I’m fine with him not being the strongest, I just don’t like seeing him useless. I don’t get why ppl say he’s never wanted to fight or train. Yea he wanted to become an orthopedist when he was 4, but I wanted to be chef at 4, and now I don’t. He wanted to go to namek, he wanted to beat enemies there, he wanted to protect earth when freeza came, he wanted to train for the androids, he wanted to preserve peace, I even remember a scene where he said he was tired of studying and wanted to get stronger so he could help ppl like his dad. I saw Gohan as the kid who couldn’t sit still and work, he needed to be active and didn’t show passion for studying. I can see why he wants more out of life than a strong body and great power, but he’s got them now, he has room to train just like we all do. This is why I think the cell arc is the best way to end the series, everything after that just has too many problems.

Wow I never knew Gohan was suppose to be the protagonist after Goku died in the cell games and that he was going to defeat buu. 2Spooky you are the best. I feel like dbz would be so cool if gohan was the protagonist. First off he would be the smartest and strongest after goku died. The low lust for battle is what makes him the strongest, it's his limiting factor. When he applies himself he can be the most powerful fighter but his contradicting human half for normality is what holds that back. Also, contrary it was not a never wanted to be a fighter as though he hated it, it was simply not his driving force in life, but he realized early on that it was important as he would try to get out of studying to train. He just lost that as years went on and the moment of Pan and Videls deaths because of Frieza and meeting with Future Trunks at least helped remind him there is something worth fighting for.

Blue X Blaze the reason why everyone is hating on Sanji is because even after the time skip Oda plants in our face that the rivalry on who's strongest is not between Luffy and Zorro, it's between Sanji and Zorro but then goes on to time and time again make Sanji as underwhelming as possible starting at Fishman Island Zorro easily defeats the poison octopus sword guy on steroids and also bested Jodi under water while Sanji..... helped beat a huge underaged monster fishman with Jinbei's help...... yeahhhhh The problem is that Oda went out of his way to portray Sanji at Zorro's level or slightly under but Zorro's achievements and Sanji are not comparable in the slightest

Gohan has the potential to become the most powerful character in the series, simply because of the fact that his potential to increase his power in a very short span of time, is well above everyone else. In Super for example, Gohan goes from below Piccolo levels of power to just about Golden Freeza levels of power, in the course of a day of training, and this potential to improve is mirrored going back all the way to the beginning of Z. Had he been training with Whis, he'd be Angel tier by now, if not higher.

I agree, Gohan was never brought up as a fighter. Gohans my favorite character, so yeah I would have love to seen him do more after the buu arc, but at the same time there wasn't a need for it. He got to live his life as a scholar like he always wanted. Why does everyone get Gohan's character right but wrong? Yeah Gohan never wanted to be a fighter in the gladiator/warrior sense like Goku and Vegeta. He wanted to fight a little for sport (joining the tournament in the Buu saga shows this) but mainly to protect people.... Especially his loved ones. I find it funny how everyone misses this HUGE characteristic of Gohan since it was made clear since the end of the Saiyan Saga. It's why he went to Namek (well that and to make up for his failings against Nappa). It's why he willingly prepared for the Androids. It's the main reason in how he went SSJ 1 and 2.... And even why he became the Great Saiyan Man. Think about it, why was he so proud about being GSM? Because though most super heroes don't care for battling to the death, they won't hesitate to jump into such a fight if it means to protect someone. Tldr Gohan isn't a warrior, but in fact is a protector/hero, and therefore more than deserves to be a top fighter (if not the top fighter) in the series.

Redemption isn't exactly what I would say is what Gohan needs.. I would like for Gohan to achieve a new form or two since even Vegeta in an episode of Dragon Ball Super and Beerus's quote from Dragon Ball FighterZ mentioned that "Gohan has the most latent potential" and "His latent potential looks promising." If not an arc dedicated to Gohan's new life as a married man, two jobs (scholar and actor), and doting father to his growing daughter, Pan, I would love to see Gohan finally reach his true maxed-out state/form. Gohan does not need to fight unless necessary but not wait last minute to retrain to get his warrior spirit back.

Super's manga (viz translation) revealed that Gohan's mystic form is actually a human power. Which means it should be possible for Krillen to obtain this power as well. It may also be possible for Gohan to mix the super saiyan and mystic forms to create that new form nobody has seen before that he talked about in super. I'm interested to see where the series goes with this after the tournament of power and broly arcs.

The problem with Gohan's "I don't like fighting" attitude is it's directly contradicted by the way he acts in a fight that he has the upper hand. When he fought against Cell as a Super Saiyan 2, he mocked Cell a lot! Even to the point where he was unwilling to kill Cell because he wanted to "Make him suffer". The same thing happened with Super Buu, through most of that fight Gohan was mocking Buu with a cocky grin on his face because he knew he had the upper hand. This is why the audience cannot be blamed for wanting Gohan to be a badass, he acts in this arrogant way and owns his opponents but then Toriyama is all like "Oh Gohan doesn't like fighting". It does the character an injustice as well as his fans. I know some people could argue that this arrogant side only comes out when he's a Super Saiyan 2 filled with rage but I call nonsense on that because Gohan was calm and collected when he fought Super Buu as Mystic Gohan and yet still he had this arrogant approach. If you want my opinion, Toriyama just didn't know what to do with Gohan so he pulled out this "I don't like fighting" thing out of his ass as an excuse to not do anything with him.

Gohan didn't really envision Cell, he dreamed it. Which is a possibility even though he's never seen him.
