You should never oil the back of rod bearings, should be as clean as possible so you don't spin them . Hopefully they won't but you are increasing the likelihood by a lot. Love the videos and keep learning 👍.

This IS IMPORTANT! Install the bearings into the rod DRY, then oil between the bearing and crank! (Sorry for repeating you Craig but he *needs to see this* )
@johnnyjohnson294215 күн бұрын
They run in oil continually, you don't think oil gets under the continually?
@kevinsellsit558415 күн бұрын
@@johnnyjohnson2942 Oil will never get between the bearing and rod because you install them clean and dry and the bearing crush pins them tightly into the rod. So much so that when you remove them 100,000 miles later the part number and size from the back of the bearing will be imprinted onto the rod.

Just a suggestion. I was taught that when tightening or loosening bolts to use gravity to help, especially with lug nuts, etc. When you were torquing down the rod bolts, you were doing the opposite. You were actually lifting the crank off the workbench. If you had flipped it around, you would have been pushing down to tighten. Gravity would have assisted in two ways. First, it is easier to 'put you weight into it" and second, since you would be pushing down, it would have helped 'anchor" the crank to the workbench and it would not have slid around so much. Great on the persistence!

Over the years, he must've done over 500 for us, and we never had a single failure. He saved us thousands over the years by turning cranks and setting us up with proper sized bearing kits. On the first video he checked that out, but it was an awful lot of material weld on. Too much material gone to get oversized shells. Joe, this is your finest build so far, very professional video, great production! I'm 69 now and have been an engine builder my whole life, I've built 100's. I just have to comment for what it's worth. I watched the whole video, frame by frame, it's proof you are a captivating producer, you have great narration skills, you held me to the end. I really couldn't fault any detail you did, (maybe put the ring gaps 45 degrees from the thrust face of the piston). I hate all those plastics inside the engine, temperature can affect those parts, it's a worry, maybe next time replace the cam chain guides at the very least, those plastic gears are a gamble. Did we work out why the engine wore so bad? Lack of lubrication from water or maybe even excessive fuel is my guess, the owner prolly buried it in a swamp, displaced all the oil. Just maybe check out the fuel injector isn't leaking or worn out, maybe check fuel pressure. Great job, now that you've done a twin with a shared crank pin it might be time for a Harley, or a Ducati, or a Guzzy, you are from WISC so a Harley would be appropriate, they are really simple, made for the war. Love your work from AUS.

A solvent cleaning fluid would get better results. But using solvents come with other problems. Joe could really use a proper vapor media blaster, to get stained cases like these pristine! But the holy grail of cleaning for stuff like these is a dry ice vapor blaster. Not only does it work incredibly well, it also leaves no film or residue, and can be done to parts "in situ", while still installed. Plus it doesn't splash liquid all over, which is important if you are trying to video the process. It is not the cheapest, but works the best and Joe can justify the cost now that the channel has grown so well. Get one Joe, you won't regret it!

Never put oil between the bearing and the rod surface. All bearings, especially Babbett type rely on a critical oil clearance. You have basically added a filler behind the bearing causing it to have a smaller oil clearance.

A great video. But I want to suggest this one thing. Look into honing cylinders. Because it is one of the most important steps in rebuilding. The angles of the cross hatch and where in the cylinder, they are very important. Steve Morris race engines. KZbin channel has a great video on honing. Keep up the great work,i said one thing but lol no.2 think about this when we line up rings on a piston we know all of the rings spin freely right round and round up and down so at many times the grooves line up so why is this alignment important? In my experience and many others, it's not a big. Deal. Correct direction of the ring is important. Boredom, as many are one side up, just my thoughts.

A good Automotive Machine Shop can weld up the journals and then regrind them

Might want to use a different solution in your part's washer. Something that isn't so sudsy. Possibly mineral spirits or a similar cleaner.
