I stopped at24:22 to say that the cable adjustment on the twist throttle is not the idle adjuster. Not on anybike. It adjusts the freeplay in the cable. There should always be a little freeplay in the cable! The idle adjustment is on the enrichment knob (choke knob as you call it) You turn the black knob to adjust. If I remember correctly it written on the body of the carb. saying which way to turn.

When I was about 13 my step dad came home from work one day and told me to come along with him.. we got in his dodge pickup and took off. We arrived at this house about 30 minutes later, pulled out back to this barn. There were old cars and tractors and stuff sitting around. We got out and this old man pushed a 86 Lt250r out of the barn. I took it for a ride. I had some suspension upgrades, FMF pipe and silencer, a tether cord kill switch, some kind of pink aluminum bars. Anyways I knew when he pushed that thing out it was mine, my dad (step dad) paid $700 for it. Plastics were nice but missing the graphics.. seat was mint and it ran great. It was too much bike for me but I grew up in the country so I took it by the horns and rode the hell out of it. I sold it a few years later for $800. I remember kicking that thing one time , I didn’t have the stroke quite right. It kicked back and nearly broke my ankle. Couldn’t ride for 2 weeks after that .. I wish like hell I had kept that bike

@@nickprice7752 that would of been a good quad to keep around these days. Cant find a cheap lt250r. My dad had a 87 lt500r. One morning he was out in the garage trying to start it with out his riding boots . Kick starter came back and broke his leg. I'll never forget that . Traded for predator 500 . Worst trade we ever made whis we still kept it. Damn fast quad .

In 1987 I had a brand new 1986 .. 250R quad. I got the 86 instead of the 87 because it was faster. My girl friend who is now my wife was the bookkeeper for a Honda dealership. I had a 1984 Yamaha yfm I got brand new for $2k. I beat the shit out of it. I traded it straight up for the 250R. A week later the mechanic was riding the old quad, detonated the tranny. I used to get everything at dealer cost. The owners was really nice ppl. I had a $350 helmet I paid $35. I used to refresh the engine every couple months just to keep it crisp. The parts was so cheap. Piston, rings, wrist pin, wrist pin bearing, gasket set was like $30. Money got tight I ended up selling it for $2500 like 15 years later. Can't believe how much they cost now. Miss that toy.

Just to say, one of the first things to do on a bike that hasn't run for a while is to drain the petrol and put new juice in. I used to have a CR500 and the problem it had was, trying to pull my arms off when getting on it just before the powerband. It was a beast, and I miss it.

By the way Joe, I had a Kawasaki mach1 500 when it first came out in 71 before they even made the 750. When cold it took three kicks to start it. WITH NO THROTTLE, full choke. If ya'll added any throttle at all it took an extra 20 kicks. I see your throttle hand rolling the throttle on every kick. On these hard to start bikes try no throttle cold with full choke. Just the first try.

I think you need the check and clean the HPP system the power valves carbon up and stick and needed regular cleaning. I had a 89 cr250 new and used to clean mine when i felt them starting to stick. I would bet most people have not cleaned theirs in years and have no idea they are stuck. A trick from the old days was to use Pam cooking spray to coat them before reassembly it was supposed to slow down the carbon build up.

Like they have said. Idle is on the choke. Now you have no free play in the throttle. They always ran best with little to no idle. Cleaner off the bottom end. Also those power valves were notorious for gumming up. If you open the left side cover you can watch them open up if clean and working properly. At one point in the early 90’s we had three of these in the garage. All at different stages of hop-up. Clean the power valves and move the clip up one notch.

I've got a 2002 CR250 now that I bought new and still has less than 10 hours on it! I've got too old and worn down now to ever get any use from it! Everybody, (almost all today), rotate their bars too far forward today, (and it hurts cornering). Here is what happened. We set them up right in the 80's and 90's, (the age of reason for MX was the 80's), and all us got old and started doing other things. A new generation was entering the sport at the same time freestyle took off (around 2000). The high bars are a freestyle set up for leg clearance for tricks. It is scary to me to see the entire industry adopt the set up,---with out thinking. Bring them back down 80's style, and you will see it is easier to keep your elbows up, (levers too "level" is a problem for high elbows too.), and you will be able to enter flat corners much easier with more front end control, (can pull up and push down on the bars better). I had the 88 CR250. I won a few races on that bike, and started modifying my own engines with that bike. The 89 was the first year with USD forks. If you get head shake, stiffer for springs should help, and maybe a bit more sag in the rear.

Check hpp valves are set correctly and the cam follower is hooked up. Bike will act like jetting way off half throttle and above. Its common that the cam follower or the end of the rack is broken. Msv racing has reproduced both of these parts luckily as good used oem 1s are super rare.

1990 and up Honda changed the right side case from the problematic magnesium to aluminum so it's a non issue for you. And if you did have to replace it for any reason they can be bought new for $200.

Was nice to see the compression numbers. I have been working on a 96 and had no real idea of what it should be or anything comparable. I got 155psi. So I put a new top end in it. Up to 195 without running yet.

My money says the cylinder plating is gone, and it is losing compression. "US Chrome" in Wisconsin does a fantastic job re-plating them, and have been doing it for decades.

I would put some new packing in the pipe because it kinda sounds like a chainsaw and it would be more crisp sounding. I did it to my rm125 and it sounds way better.

The frame was originally red. I painted mine white back in 1993 to look like a 1990. 1990 is when they switched to white. I had a guy offer to trade me a 1990 CR500 even for my 89 but I declined because the 500 reputation is they are too hard to ride. Only if I knew then what a cherry 500 would go for now.
