Unless you are building a professional race machine, I can't see how you could spend $8000 on a rebuild and NOT have every internal part new. Whatever mechanic he used, he should not go to any more. Great job diagnosing this. When I saw the video title, the first thing that ran through my mind was "Check the valves". That should have been part of an $8000 rebuild. I am guessing there is still something wrong (ring gap, or valve seals). I think he basically got ripped off.

yes. what in the Hell? for $8k, I’d expect to start it up, put it in gear, ride down to my mailbox, open my fresh shipment of stupid pills, crush up 4x the recommended dosage, snort half of it, freebase the rest from my mother’s crack pipe she’s used my entire life plus 5 months (I was 4 mo premature), put my 12 early voting ballots into the mailbox for J. Biden, ride down the hill, then hit top speed in an attempt to make it across the same river that I sunk it in last time I had it rebuilt for $8.2k. I paid an additional $200 to have my headlight fluid replaced with a clear-tinted gender neutral invisible solvent & non-binary filter. what did you guys do that day?

20+ years old is considered a classic in a lot of places and collectible if built to OEM/OEM+ standards, if not wanted by a collector who grew up riding the bike museums could potentially give a high value tax credit for the donation if not bought. Same reason you'd restore a vintage except parts are typically more available at OG costs the younger they are.

Little tip to save you a ton of time and money next time. When diagnosing a no start and checking spark pay attention to whether it is a good consistent spark. If it appears to be a quick bright spark then disappear as this one does that is a tell tale sign of a stator/pickup coil shorted to ground. Should spark consistently on every other engine revolution. Also just checking stator with a meter would have also shown this.

@@slickricktheruler its to allow more air into it. you get a cylinder full of unburnt fuel, so in turn you open the throttle to get more air to mix with the fuel. like blowing on a fire. same way we open the choke. it just adds basically a little more choke. more air the better on startup. its just not good when its running because the fuel burns way to hot , and causes issues .not sure where people got the impression , that you never touch the throttle during startup . im assuming a reddit post ?

Those CRF throwaway MX bikes all have issues like that. If compression is low, good luck getting it to light off. They have a piston that looks like an aluminum disc with 2 tabs on it to keep it from turning sideways in the bore, and it uses one compression ring and an oil control ring and that's it. Titanium intake valves only compound the problem as the faces get pounded out and clearance goes away, killing compression. We won't get into a less-than-1 quart oil capacity which only promotes grenade action. Bring back the 2-stroke MX bikes! Joe, you're a pro at this and you get stuff running when others give up! Thanks for a cool video!

to those about to whine about the startup revving: know that he was nowhere near redlining. those that have actual experience with this specific 250 will tell you that he was in the bottom half of the rev spectrum the entire time, but it does jump from the middle to the top pretty dang quick. that’s why this era CRF250R was so good coming out of the corners & on Florida tracks. it’s a berm blaster, for sure. I had/kept this exact year/model bike & it’s big 450 brother for over 5 years. the 450 hurt me more than any other bike I crashed on course & I avoided it for nearly a year before we made up. I was wearing a stupid pressure suit because it seemed cooler than the type of gear that kept me safe for over 12 years of serious & circuit riding. that lesson was learned the hard way. I made it through, but blew the best season I ever had going. personally, I would’ve taken it a little easier on the startup; though, I wasn’t the one with a getting-sore right foot, burning quad muscles & hard-tried patience. nice work, Joe. those rings will probably come in well enough in a cycle or two. the Honda Bong Hit you were hearing was probably due to the clutch side being oilless. if you try a LDT again with the wet basket side full, it won’t sound like my college apartment with my roommates watching the new South Park (not that I wasn’t seated with them or reading a Bible alone upstairs) $830 for a carb for a non-circuit racer is pretty dang zealous. Its thier money, had a friend who, in 2005 restored a 1994 chevy 1500. Dropped 20k+ on this dumb ass basic plain truck. Literally just restored a bone stock 94 chevy. He was happy as fuck, nobody could tell him it was a dumb idea

Just started watching your channel. Love the content. What hooks me is the price you buy them at and make em run. Great videos keep it up.

I know this video is old but I still figured I’d comment some of my experience with Lectron carbs. I race hare scrambles on an 03 cr 250 that I have a Billetron on. Any Lectron is super finicky any air leak of vacuum leak will make them not send enough fuel into the combustion chamber. In my case my bike ran flawlessly until round 2 when I had to blow into the fuel lines in order to get the bike to fire up. Checking the carb and everything seemed fine, compression was fine. Everything seemed fine. I did not do a leak down test. I tore the motor down at the end of the season and both of my reed valve fingers had some decent size holes in them. This created enough of a vacuum loss to stop the right amount of fuel getting to the motor. Maybe in this case the rings not being seated maybe could have caused that. Idk just throwing out my two sense

Quit twisting the throttle when trying to start. That's why it's taking forever

He does that with every bike. People have been telling him for years.

That is true Honda's usually start best with a closed throttle.

I enjoy watching all of your different videos, I've learned a lot about how to repair engines and little things to try when everything should be working, but they don't . Too, what may actually be a good buy, with just a bit of work. 👍

$8000 jesus he was taken for a ride with labor charges because a full engine rebuild will never cost that much,i had a 2002 and fully rebuilt it including bottom and top end for $3000 including the labor

Interested in a follow up after you get the clutch done - I wonder if there are anymore gremlins.

Love the channel. Great learning moments. Engine basics, same on a Honda 250cc or Cadillac 472ci. 😭I didn't know there would be math. If the garage was't fumigated before, it is now.

@2vintage, you are awesome. I keep watching your clips. Very educational. Except my wife is getting mad at me for watching too many bike stuff. I have a question: when you run compression test, you open the throttle. Can you (or someone) explain the relation. AFAIK, throttle is part of fuel delivery system and when bike is off, there is no combustion and one is simply measuring the amount of pressure in the piston caused by up down motion, hence any ring leak and such. Thanks and keep up the good work.

(Just my experience) iwhen I check for a spark, I do it by turning ignition switch, off & on. You can can see the spark better than kicking the bike over and looking at the same time, and the whole bike is signaling about. My advice is to see if you can do this now, while you have no problems, rather than not know, when you've broke down on side of the road.. happy riding

Damn $8k, he could have bought a new bike for $1k more. Edit: forgot that’s not including purchase price. Could have bought a new fuel injected bike for what he’s got into it.

Just started watching your videos. I noticed you do the exact same thing with the throttle when trying to start for the first time. You twist it a bunch with your whole hand then you twist it a bunch with your finger tips and then back to full hand twisting while looking down at the carb. Third video ive watched and you've done the same each time 😂😂

I enjoy watching ur vids. helps to get a new perspective on things while wrenching. and I always like another set of eyes making sure I'm doing what should be done correctly. only thing I would reccomend for u is to not use the impact while loosening torqued bolts that are into aluminum or other soft metals. steal is fine imo go nuts on it. but aluminum!!. on my rides i always break bolts loose by hand then use the impact. if u use an impact repeatability say troubleshooting or a clutch basket. u will destroy the threads. I'm all for saving time. but I'm also for not causing ANY damage. just my 2 cents from being a mechanic 15 years and been around 45 year master mechanics my entire life. also ur pup or u shouldn't breath those fumes. much love from Michigan

Yeah I agree the bur on the crank trigger and possibly also the shavings from it interfering with the signal were causing the pickup to give the intermittent spark and maybe changing the Ig timing to be off/jumpy depending if it read of the bur or not. Probably happened from the pickup/trigger air gap being off have seen that a few times with non runners from customers trying to install new pickups before.

Here's my question did he build the engine or did he have a shop do it ? If a shop did it they'd be fixing it until it runs
@brettsummer5070 Жыл бұрын
Judging by the work order I’d say they confused the idle screw with the fuel screw (2 1/2 turns on the fuel screw instead of the idle). Bummer for the owner but probably best you found that wiring for the pickup before it got eaten up

There's 8 grand in it. And your seat is zip tied down like what's going on. did he not hear it run when he got it back from the shop

Zip ties are only there to hold the aftermarket seat cover on without staples

Have you ever heard of a gas rag? I use this method all the time to start engines with carb or no fuel issues. Will work on literally any engine and its so much better than ether.
